went to my 1st support group mtg

Recommended Posts

It really helped, everybody was so honest and we could all totally relate to each other..about everything. It was wonderful. My surgeon totally rocks and so does his bariatric life coach. I am completely back on track because of it. If anybody has a WLS support group, I highly recommend going. God Bless!

I'm glad you had a great experience at the support group. I haven't attended any of my programs meetings, but have considered it a couple of times.

I love my support group. I haven't been able to go lately and I miss it terribly. Last time I was there I spilled my guts because so many people there had lap band and I wanted them to know that there are other options. this support group is for all surgery types. I am sure next time I go, people will have questions about the sleeve. Not many people around here have had it done. Gastric bypass and lap band are still popular, and I want everyone to know there is something better out there. I am looking forward to the next one.

Hey Steph!!

I'm glad things went well for you!! We DO need the support! They're "re-vamping" ours here..... the closest one to me is Nashville which is about 1 1/2 hours away- So I'm hoping I can find a group close by so I can go weekly. Otherwise I'm gonna try to go once a montha at least. I need it more now that I'm getting farther out and closer to goal.

I'm in sort of the same boat as Chancie. My support group is 1.5 hours away, but I'm really feeling like I need to start attending as I near my goal weight. It also sucks that the meetings are on Monday evenings and that is when my tap class is. I'm so glad you found your meeting to be so beneficial...I think it might inspire me to find one closer or miss a class and attend the next one.

I want a support group. I would go once a month easy. Anyone know how to find one if you haven't been sleeved in your home area?

We have a support group here that's ran by the psych on base, but she opens up the support group to any bariatric patient even if the surgery was performed by a civilian surgeon, or another surgeon out of state. She doesn't even require that you be affiliated with the military such as a spouse, or member to attend the support group.

If you can contact some of the centers of excellence in your area, or one of the hospitals that perform the sleeve, and see if they offer a support group that is open to any and all bariatric patients.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
