Hey, I'm scheduled to have the VSG on Oct 2, 2009. My surgeon makes a 300ml sleeve. Almost 10 ozs. Does that seem like a lot to you?

You have come to the right place to research. You will have a lot of people chime in here today with answers for you. I am being sleeved on Thursday by Dr Aceves. From my understanding his sleeves only hold about 4 ozs. Wow, 10 oz is a lot to start off with plus you will be able to hold a little more than that as time passes.

Yeah I'm so ready for this amazing journey, but 10 ozs seems like a lot. European surgeons tend me be more conservative. I'll just have to work harder, I guess. But I'm seeing this as a good thing, I'll be able to get in more Protein to fuel my 2-3 hr workouts I have planned daily. =)

I'm trying to look at it in perspective, a normal person can easily hold 33 ozs (1 liter).. most can even hold 132 ozs (4 liters, 1 gallon) if they push it (Thanksgiving?).. so 10 ozs I can work with. =) I'll just have to be extra dilgent about keeping away from the naughty carbs and sticking to the good ones (Beans, lentils, veggies, fruit).... after my protein of course =)

Welcome Josephine. Glad to hear you'll be getting your band out and revising to the sleeve. Who is your surgeon and where is your surgery being performed? I had mine done in Mexicali, Mexico by Dr. Aceves. He's AWESOME. He uses a 32 boughie and then oversews. I am almost 4 months out and can eat about 3 oz. -- I can't even imagine being able to eat 10 oz - that is ALOT. A healthy portion of meat at a meal is 4 oz, so that leaves 6 oz for other fillers -- that seems like way too much to me; but then again, I'm not a bariatric surgeon. I think you will have to be VERY careful with what you eat - I am sure it will be much more than you've been able to eat with the band. Mac is one year out and is only able to eat, I believe she said, 6 oz. and she had a US surgeon. Good luck!

what size bougie is that?

Sounds big to me. Mine was a 36. I guess about 4 ounces. I am happy with that.

I am not a surgeon but that seems like a lot to me. I have a 32F and at 5 weeks I can hold 2 - 3 oz. 2 oz for me is the rule but some real soft foods I can hold 3 oz (like pudding or yogurt).

Maybe you should talk to him about a smaller size? Ask what size he is using and why. It is your body, you have a right to ask.

I seem to remember that it is difficult to revise again once you have been sleeved because the staples can't be found after healing has taken place. Seriously, this might be your only chance. Be cautious even if it means a delay in surgery.

I agree with the other ladies that mentioned that size of bougie sounds quite large compared to the "standard". I have a 32F with no oversewing, and at 4 months out, I can get in 4oz of mushies, or 2-3oz of dense Protein, NOT simultaneously. I can eat almost an entire cup (6oz cup of Yoplait Light)of yogurt, but it takes me over 30 minutes to eat all of it.

I also revised from the band to the sleeve and it was the very best decision in the world.

I saw a study that showed all the patients eventually ended up with about a 8 or 9 oz sleeve after 2 years. Maybe he means 10 ozs eventually? I sure hope so! I'll mention it to him if I see him before surgery.

But then he takes up some of the slack when he does the oversewing, so you end up with about a 32.

I thought the same thing to Daisy; however, if he used a 32 and then overstitched - we'd end up with like a 28 and wouldn't be able to eat anything. So a 36 with overstitching - we still end up with a 32, so all is good.
