Hernias

Hello all!!!

I am not banded yet....getting close.....waiting on insurance. I did want to ask all you banders about hernias. I hear a lot of people talk about hernias on here. Is that something that can be caused by the band or just a coincidence?

  • My understanding is that most obese people have hiatal hernias and they are commonly repaired when the band is placed.

Yup Guy is right. Not just hiatal hernias but abdominal hernias, too. They're often caused by obesity and fixed at the same time someone gets their band.

  • I had one, and it was repaired during surgery. It is very common with obesity, and you will probably hear from many, saying that they also had them repaired at the time of surgery.

sorry had to be stupid there for a minute

my hernia was repair during surgery and i never even knew

i had one much less know what it was then......and if i am honest, now

dont worry, it can be fixed :) smp

Hi there, I just met with my surgeon (I am pre-band) and I asked bout this. He said they have no idea until they are there. So there may be a repair in my future, or not. We will see! I'm not going to worry about it. (Trying not to bank anxiety in advance, which is so my mode. Old mode. New mode is Health and Happiness!).

I had to have an upper GI before my surgery to check for hernias. Got to drink the barium milkshake and all! My surgeon would have sworn by my symptoms that I had one but the GI proved other wise and there were no surprises when I was banded. From what I can tell not everyone is required to have the GI. If you are worried Bout it just ask for one and then you'll know.

I suspected I had a hernia and was right. That repair is where most of my pain is coming from now 4 days post op,

am shocked someone hasnt posted the band caused the govt to shut down..

LOL!
