Post-op diet, how many days til your DR said ok for solids?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering if there is as much variability in the post-op diets as the pre-op diets. Even my surgeon himself gave some different directions. The nutritionist said liquids for two weeks, the surgeon said 5 days liquids, 5 days mushy, then on to solids.

How long has everyone been told to stay on liquids? And how much of that do you think is for diet reasons versus for the stomach to heal?

I think it's completely about healing. I was on a week each of clear then creamy liquids and 1 week of mushies. On the start of my fourth week post op I started regular foods.

I didn't get solids until about 30 days, 2 weeks liquids, 1 week mushy, 1 week introducing soft.

I had 3 weeks liquids, then 2 weeks softs, so based on the posts so far, yes... the post op vary too!

Just follow what your doctor had given you. No one here is qualified to tell you otherwise. IMO

as long as you follow your dr's instructions, you should do fine

i was 2 1/2 weeks pre op liquids

2 weeks post op liquids

1 week mushies

1 week soft

then as tolerated...

after surgery its vital to let the insides heal

regardless of those who ate shortly thereafter...

this was major surgery and our health is worth more

than (gotta eat because i am hungry)

I week liquid

1 week mushy

1 week soft

I'm on my 3rd week now but I'm gonna call my doc to see if week 4 I can go to solid although I have read up to six weeks on post op diets.

As you can see, there are many variations. What our doctors said is irrelevant to our question. Do what the doctor you chose recommends, and don't compare until you find and answer you like.

Right! Something's may work for others that may not work for you.... Follow what your doc said.

My Dr. told me 1 week liquid,1 week soft/mushie and 3rd week add solids. I'm adding slowly some chicken but I still chop it into small pieces and chew, chew chew. I'm not in a hurry to eat everything.

Mine is one week liquids, three days "pre-selects" (certain soft foods that are high in Protein and well-tolerated by most people), two weeks of all softs, and then solids.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
