How soon after surgery can you go swimming?

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I like running and swimming. I understand that you can't run for 4 weeks after surgery but how about swimming?

Thanks

I was told by my Dr. to do as little as possible for the first week....THEN I had a appointment with him, 7 days from surgery, where he inspected my incisions, etc.....it was then he answered my questions about any activities I wanted to do....also post-op diet questions, etc....

You really should be asking your Dr. these questions.....

Unfortunately, there are people here that feel they need to tell you what you should and should not do.....

I totally agree with b-52. My own surgeon restricted me to walking until after my 6 week check up with him. Personally, I know that there was no swimming until after all the incisions had healed.

Please speak to with you doctor. Mine allowed me to return to swimming 2 weeks post op.

I agree with the advice to check with the doctor, but I do know for sure they won't want you to swim until your incisions are healed. It increases the risk of infection if they're not. Learned that the hard way when I had to miss out on the last of the good summer swimming weather after my gallbladder surgery a few years ago!

Most public pools want fully healed incisions before allowing you to swim do to possible blood seepage.

This is definitely and ask the doctor, not us nobodies question!

I asked this exact question last May when I had my surgery and I agree with the advice to ask your doctor. I just wanted to share that my 12-year-old daughter was disappointed that I couldn't be the first dad in the pool on Memorial Day but when I explained that I didn't want to fill up with Water through the incisions she understood. :D

Thanks all. I've asked my Doc and she says after the stitches have been removed. Thanks

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
