new to site - thank you! (considering surgery + wanting to be pregnant sooner than later)

Recommended Posts

I just wanted to thank everyone that posts in this forum. I've been 'back-burner' considering the lap band for a couple of years now, and after the last 24 month cycle of losing 30lbs, gaining it back - then hurting my knee and gaining more, all while my husband and I are trying to get pregnant - this forum really helped me gather a lot of information.

I recently decided that we should hold off on actively trying to get pregnant until I can get healthier - I'm around 300lbs now and my weight plus my knee hurting (to the point that it makes exercise difficult, which only adds to the problem) I think it'd just be really hard on my body to get pregnant right now. Nevermind the fact that I've got some questions about my fertility at this weight (we've been trying for around 8 months).

It sounds like there are lots of experiences out there with getting pregnant post-surgery (some waiting 12+ months, some happening sooner). I'll admit - I'm a little nervous about my age being a factor if I can get through all of the paperwork and have the surgery and then wait a full year post-surgery, but I'm feeling much better informed about possibilities after reading all of your threads.

I've put in a request to speak with a surgeon nearish to me (I live in a rural area, so the closest is 40 mi away). Especially after the latest round of weight loss/gain, in a history of this cycle, i'm feeling much more confident in really exploring this option.

Thanks again!

I wish you the best.. though i have stopped doing what I should, i just got back on track Jan. 1st i feel great! I started y journey at 251... i lost my first 60 in 3 1/2 months post surgery. Its a lifestyle change. the band tool worked for me... I live in Orange Park Fl I saw Dr Michael Baptista he and his staff were amazing... I suggest the band; heck I suggest anything to be a parent. No fear; there are children in the world who need homes just incase... You will be in my prayers; i believe eveyone who wants to be a parent should! Good Luck!

I do recommend getting the band. It was the best decision I ever made. Having a healthy pregnancy was part of the reason I wanted to lose weight too, and in my case it really worked. I was worried about age too (although I'm glad to say that I got pregnant at 30; I thought I would have to wait longer). Work closely with a doctor if you are concerned about infertility, because sometimes you will have to do other things than just lose weight to help with that. I ended up having to take some medications to help balance out my hormones although I'd lost a significant amount of weight before becoming pregnant. BEST of luck!

I ended up still having to go thru fertility treatments to get my almost 2 year old, I had him at the age of 37.. I had my surgery 8/2008 and got pregnant 4/2010 but I still had some issue as well as my husband. I agree with others and recommend getting the band, it has been the best thing I ever did for myself. Good luck on your journey for weight loss and having a baby.

Most doctors want you to agree to be on birth control for 12 months after surgery. As someone who had a lot of me problems the surgery has been fabulous. There was a time when I could barely walk to the grocery store to do my shopping. This summer I was up to doing 7 to 7 a half miles of walk everyday.

I'm viewing for my phone so I can't see your profile. I would say if you're under 35 you should have the surgery wait a year before trying to conceive.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
