What was the afternoon of your surgery like?

Recommended Posts

You know your kids best and what they will and won't find traumatic. Also, if you decide to change your mind the afternoon of surgery you can always let your husband know at the time. My 6 year old understands that sometimes plans change.

Personally, I had a lot of gas pain post-op. i underestimated gas pain before I experienced it first hand, it was extremely painful. Also my throat was very irritated from the tube and my voice was raspy. I don't how your kids would react if that happened to you.My c-section recovery was much easier. I did not see my daughter till the day after lap band surgery although I went home that day, she had a sleepover. I might sound like a mean mom but I did not feel like a game of 50 questions and that's exactly what it would've been with her.

thanks everyone, my kids did come and visit and it was nice for all of us. They had major fascination with the tubes and buzzers etc.. and at one point put on gloves and pretended to be the doctors! I was fine, no major pain so far (had surgery Thurssday came home Friday)

We had to bring our 6 year old daughter with us to the hospital after our babysitter caught the flu. We woke up at 4am and arrived at the hospital by 5:30 am. She hung out with my hubby and I and asked a lot of questions about what was going on. She held my hand after two trys to get the IV in and gave me hugs and kisses when it was time for surgery at 7:30am. While I was in the OR and recovery she hung out with my hubby and played with her My Little Ponys, her ds and the iPad. They went to Breakfast and had her favorite; pancakes. When I was taken to short stay, they both came back to see me and my voice was really low and raspy from the breathing tube and the fact that it hurt to breath. My daughter was concerned and asked the nurse why mommies voice sounded funny and after they explained it to her, she was cool with it. She told me all about her day and how she's happy I'm okay. Then when it was time to finally go, she held my hand while the nurse removed my IV and asked to help wheel me out to the car. She is VERY much a caretaker. This is the third major surgery for me in a year so she is knowledgeable about what to expect. When she was two, her favorite book was my pocket anatomy and physiology book from school. Every child is different and every parent knows the limits of their children. Do what makes you all comfortable.

My daughter is 5. I explained to her everything that I was doing and the reasons why. I don't think it would be traumatic for them at all. It would probably worry them more not to see you because it will be out of the norm for them. You will be sleepy from the anesthesia, but you will be able to see them for a bit. My daughter went to the hospital, and was with me after I went home. I think they will be fine. They will be curious but fine. I think it will be comforting for you as well.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
