Best Value for Self-Pay Banding?

Recommended Posts

Wow! This forum is overwhelming! I don't know how to find the appropriate section to read/write my questions... So, I'll start here!

I'm 47 yo female, BMI 55, 5'10" 400 lbs, with no medical insurance. :cry

Of course, I'd like to get the best, safest band experience for the least money! How do I go about researching all that I need to know? I've read LOTS to know that this is what I want -- plus I'm a registered nurse -- but I can't find an unbiased source to answer my specific concerns.

Has anyone used MedRetreat.com to go overseas for this procedure?

How can I do my own research on reliable foreign options?

What kind of cost are we REALLY talking about? :)

If I'm banded overseas, how do I deal with fillings? (From Montana!)

I see that weight loss is slower with bands than bypass (which is fine with me), but are the longterm success rates comparable?

How have people dealt with excess skin after weight loss: is it a big issue? requiring surgical correction? improves with exercise?

Does it make sense to have some liposuction at the same time as banding? It seems like it might! Does anyone do that?

What are some things I should know that only experience has taught you, that you wish you'd known before making the commitment?

Many thanks, Dhira (dhira at aol dot com)

Check out the top chat forum, General Lap Band Discussion, and you'll find answers to all of your questions and more! Also, the are "Sticky" topics, things that are perma-posted for people to browse.

Another good spot for the basic overview of the surgery is on the Inamed website. They make the band. (Just google Inamed and youll find it). Obesity Help.com also has good info on different surgeries. Welcome!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
