My Bump In The Road...

Recommended Posts

I was banded in Aug, 2011. At one year, I had lost 50 pound, which was my goal for being a year out.

I have about 100 to lose, and I went into this journey knowing that the average weight loss for people with the band is 50% of their excess weight - I had decided that if I could lose 50 pounds, I was "successful". Anything more was icing on the cake (no pun intended :D).

About 8 weeks ago, I started to have very severe reflux at night. So bad, that it would wake me up and I would be choking. I also noticed very loud gurgling when eating or drinking and pain between my shoulder blades. I had not had a fill in approx 4 months, so it was a big surprise for me!

I tried to live with it (the weight loss was great!!), but finally one night couldn't stand it. I called the surgeon on call and ended up going to the ED to have Fluid removed. After 12 hours, an xray, lab work and a resident that could not find the right needle to do the job, they removed 1cc. Immediate relief!

6 weeks later I returned to my surgeon and she decided to put back in 0.5cc. All good for a day or 2 - then BAMO - reflux, gurgling, pain... I went back and had the 0.5cc removed. Again, relief! Upper GI done and NO slip - so that was good. But also, it didn't appear that I had any restriction either!

Today, she put back in 0.25cc and told me to stay on liquids for several days.

Anyone else have this issue? I know the band is finicky, but I was really surprised to experience such an issue after things had been going so well.

Any thoughs regarding what I could possibly be doing to cause this?

Thanks!

Yes. Had upper G.I. on Monday and no slip. Band appears to be positioned well.

I have not had a fill since the end of June, and all of a sudden I was too tight. I was told it could be stress. I went in yesterday and had 1/2 cc removed and I feel SO much better. I fought it for 2 months, thinking it would get better again, but no luck, so I had finally decided that it was time to have some removed.

I agree, the weight loss is great, but the effects of acid, PB'ing, and being miserable just arent worth it! (I will be banded a year in December and have lost 75lbs)

I did have a ton of stress at the time, so maybe that is a realistic cause.

I've believed in .25cc fills for the last 3 fills giving me a 6cc total in 10cc band. Have they ever scoped you for Barrottes esophagus? Not sure if spelling is right.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
