constant esophagus burn

Recommended Posts

Is that a sign of something that should scare me? I have this constantly. It's heart burn but in my throat.

Thanks,

Karen

Yes, your surgeon should know so that it can be treated. If you are dealing with stomach acid in your throat, it won't get better by itself.

I developed that after my 6th fill. I am on Omperazone or something like that now and havent had the heartburn or reflux since I started on it 5 mths ago.

Karen,

Burning in your throat is not an uncommon sensation when you are having reflux. This is caused by acid from your stomach backwashing into your esophagus. When you feel it in your throat it is actually a referred sensation from your esophagus, right where it connects to your stomach. Maalox should help short term but it sounds like you need and acid blocker type medication.. I your already on one you may need a stronger dose.

HI,

I was having the same problems. I had an endo last monday which showed esophageal erosion, esophagitis, gastritis and vocal cord irritation and inflammation. I saw the Dr who did my endo yesterday, he has me on Nexium 40mg twice a day. HOLY COW! does that stuff help. He told me that I am just someone who produces too much acid, and that my band is not the culprit. My endo Dr. consulted with a band Dr for advice before he saw me for a follow up.

I'd ask for an endo. it's better to look have someone look directly at the area that is giving you problems and get a definate answer then to speculate and try to guess what the problem is. I tried gaviscon, prevacid, pepcid, maalox, tums, rolaids, you name it, nothing worked.

I was worried constantly that something was terribly wrong with my band-now I know and have a huge sense of relief.

You may also want to make sure that your band fill is not too tight, that can cause reflux big time. It's amazing how just the removal of the smallest amount of Fluid and the symptoms will dissappear completely.

No matter the cause, you need to see your doctor to make the determination and course of treatment needed for you.

Good luck, hope it's really a minor issue for you. In the meantime, until you can get to the doc's, Tums or any of the over the counter antacids can bring you some temporary relief, but just until you see the doctor.

Take care.

Cindy

Any severe heartburn or GERD should always be checked out quickly. If it starts after a fill, it's almost always a sign of a too-tight fill and will be relieved by a small unfill. If it starts NOT around a fill time, it can be a sign of a slip or other problems. You always need to see or consult your band surgeon. Don't simply try to cover it up with acid reducers, but fix the cause or your stomach and band can be badly hurt. Renee

I had the same symptoms before banding, it was acid reflux, which can cause damage to your esophagus. I started taking Nexium, which to me is a wonder drug!

After being banded it went away until I developed an unrelated problem; it caused my band to become too tight. From what I've read, a too-tight band can definately contribute to acid reflux, and night-time eating can too. If you eat at night, then lie down to sleep, the food just lies there and causes acid to come up in your throat.

Hope this helps; it definately should be checked out.

Lots of obese people have reflux before banding, from a hiatal hernia. this is routinely repaired with the band surgery. the reflux that happens AFTER banding is from an entirely different cause - either a too-tight fill, or another problem, including a possible slip. All reflux should be checked out, and quickly, before pouch and/or stoma damage occurs. Renee

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!

I changed my profile image to a molecule of protein. Why? Because I am certain that it saved my life.

That's brilliant! You've done amazing!! I should probably think about changing my profile picture at some point. Mine is the doll from Squid Games. Ironically the whole premise of the show is about dodging death. We've both done that...

Two years out. Lost 120 , regained 5 lbs. Recently has a bout of Norovirus, lost 7 pounds in two days. Now my stomach feels like it did right after my surgery. Sore, sensitive to even water.  Anyone out there have a similar experience?
