6 Days Til Surgery, Scared About Pre-Opt Appointment

Recommended Posts

My surgeon's office has gone out of their way to hurry me through the process of getting banded. My husband was banded in December, so I had just been through the whole process with him. Due to the nature of his career and needing him home to help with our children when I had surgery, I had a very narrow window of time available this year. I'm very grateful for all they have done to help me.

However...I was supposed to lose 8 pounds prior to surgery. Before I started my liquid died, I weaned my daughter...and immediately gained 15 pounds (I'm assuming due to shifting hormones and using 500 fewer calories a day). I'm one week into my liquid diet and was down to 2 pounds above my starting weight. Then, this evening I weighed myself and had gained 7 pounds (which is monthly bloating, I know).

Tomorrow I go for my pre-op appointment. My husband had gained ONE pound before starting his liquid diet and the scheduling lady freaked out about it. The nutritionist told me not to worry, that the surgeon wouldn't decline to do my surgery.

After all the hoops I've jumped through to get this done before next year, I'm terrified they will reject me for gaining weight. I figure, in my second week of liquid, I could probably get back to where I was a 2 pounds over my start weight, but that is still 10 pounds more than I'm supposed to weigh.

Anyone else have experience with not losing weight prior to surgery? Did it prevent you from proceeding?

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
