Hi All, I was banded in August of 2010. I had roughly 100 lbs to lose and I lost about 50 lbs (recently gained back 8 lbs due to needed unfill). I have NEVER had an easy go of it. Constant vomitting, food getting stuck etc. I only lost weight because I had many periods where my band would tighten up on its own and nothing but Protein Shakes and Soup would get down. In January of this year I started having severe heartburn and reflux. I had several esophograms and an endoscopy and nothing much was revealed. I went to doctor yesterday...fed up of 2 years of this and was ready to remove the band. When low and behold, a very astute NP looked at my post-op esophogram and compare it to the current and he saw signs of a hiatal hernia and slippage. A surgeon then came in and concurred and now I am headed back to surgery for a hiatal surgery repair. I am though questioning if I will get any benefit from this or am I just going to be one of those people for whom a lap band is not a good option. I don't want to go back to the tightening and vomitting etc. My nutrition had been horendous with very little Protein and hardly any vegetables--they all get stuck with lettuce the worst offender. My question is--has anyone gone through this and if so, did it all get better after your hernia repair and band revision? Since I am going back to surgery, I want to make the right decision--keep the band? convert to a sleeve or bypass? or remove all together?.... Thanks for reading.

I would ask your surgeon if (s)he plans to suture the band in place, to help prevent a slip? Since they are going in anyway, it might be worth asking.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
