Are You Stretching Your Pouch If...

Recommended Posts

You need a fill and eat a regular-portion plate of food? Or is it just going down and I don't have to worry? Ideally I know I should control myself, but I feel hungry all the time. I'm just trying to figure out what if any damage I might be doing while I wait for my appointment next Tuesday.

Yes, you probably are. Something that I didn't know until it was too late is that your esphogus will stretch to accomodate the excess amount of food you're taking in. If you don't have your fills done under fluoroscope, you don't really know what your pouch looks like.

I'm about to lose my band after almost two years of living with it, and I can't urge you enough to lower your portion size. Really try to work with your band, instead of against it.

Good luck.

I don't mean to scare you.

Yikes...

I think you can with repeated over eating, but supposidly every bite should go through your band before you take the next, if this is true I think it would really take a lot to stretch it. (this is just my thoughts - I could be way wrong) Until I had good restriction I could eat way more than my cup of food. It had been a year since I had a fill... And I had gotten so I could eat quite a bit more food. went in and only had 0.2 cc put in my band. I now have trouble getting a cup of food down. So I don't feel like I have stretched my pouch with overeating. Although it is not something I repeatidly do.

Uff... stopping when you are full is still so hard!

Ultimately... getting it under control is the only answer for so many reasons.

Best of Luck!

I don't see how you could stretch your pouch if you don't get a stuck feeling? food would have to fill up your pouch and then expand your pouch because you keep overeating and the food has no place to go. Most of us would be so uncomfortable or in pain that it couldn't happen. I suppose in some cases where the pouch had a lot of elasticity you could do this but that would have to be rare I would think?

I would think that stretching your pouch would involve a lot of pbing and vomiting.

I've never had a fill under fluoro; it's not something my clinic does regularly. As to stretching the pouch, I don't know. I have to admit, I can overeat pretty easily in the evenings (it's something I really struggle with, because the rest of the day I can't really seem to eat much at all). It's often a feeling like my pouch is wide open because I don't even feel ANY restriction. So....I don't know. I think if you're not feeling anything you'll be okay. Obviously it's not a habit you want to get into, so do try to control it but I think you'll be okay.

In order to stretch your pouch, you'd have to continue eating with food sitting on top of the band.

I'm not sure how that's possible. If I take a bite with food already sitting there, I immediately know I'm stuck. If I were to continue attempting to eat (though I'd have to be crazy to even want to when that uncomfortable) I'm sure I'd end up PBing.

I can see someone maybe taking huge bites and not chewing habitually and stretching their pouch, but for someone to stretch their pouch from overeating that would mean they're eating despite being stuck, seriously uncomfortable, and possibly even in pain. It would also mean they're likely continuing to eat despite sliming and/or PBing.

That makes zero sense to me. I'm no doctor, but I just can't see that happening.

I went to a "band class" today.

Over eating WILL stretch your band and can also stretch your esophagus.

I highly recommend you buy a food scale. My doctor says to weight out 3 oz of solid Protein. This will help you to control you portions. I still measure out my protein lunch and dinner even though I am at restriction.

No, it doesn't hurt at all. After a year with my band, I would get stuck occassionaly, but that's if I ate something like bread or rice, or didn't chew well enough. After a time, I found if I waited about 5-10 minutes, I could just keep eating and it would feel fine. I wouldn't gorge myself, but I felt in my mind that I was probably eating more than I should. My meals were roughly 1.5c worth. However, I lost weight. 93lbs to be exact!!! BUT.....

Little did I know that I was stretching my pouch and eventually my esophagus. Here I am, two years to the day that I had my surgery, and I've been told my band has to be removed and that it's causing a potentially life-threatening condition to me. The doctor stresses to me that it's not my fault (I have the success of the weight loss to back me up that I did do what I was supposed to), but that the band isn't proving to be what it originally was thought for a long-term solution to weight loss. I'm devastated. Completely and utterly devastated that my band is failing me.

If your clinic/dr. doesn't use a fluoroscope when performing a fill, you will have no idea what it's doing to your body. I can't stress enough that you WILL NOT FEEL pain and you will NOT be stuck when you are stretching your pouch & your esophagus. Eventually you will probably come to have the gurgling toilet drain sound followed by the nightly reflux. That is when there is trouble.

Anyway, I just thought I would put my two cents in. Good luck, everyone!

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.

I have no clue where to upload this, so I'll put it here. This is pre-op vs the morning of my 6 month appointment! In office I weight 232, that's 88 lbs down since my highest weight, 75 lbs since my surgery weight! I can't believe this jacket fit... I am smaller now than the last time I was this size which the surgeon found really amusing. He's happy with where I am in my weight loss and estimates I'll be around 200 lbs by my 1 year anniversary! My lowest weight as an adult is 195, so that's pretty damn exciting to think I'll be near that at a year. Everything from there will be unknown territory!!
