Chemotherapy And The Lapband

Recommended Posts

I was wondering if anyone on this board has experience with going through chemotherapy with the lapband. Did you get an unfill?

I've already had three sessions of chemo (out of six) but I'm still thinking of getting an unfill because the chemotherapy itself is giving me acid reflux and heartburn. Having the band there is really not helping but, then again, I can't overeat either, so it is helping me not go too crazy when I'm taking Predisone (which increases appetite).

One of the main reasons I haven't done the unfill is just that I would have to drive 1 to 1 1/2 hours just to do that and I don't feel that well to do that plus it just means more time off work when I'm basically gone most of the time due to chemo.

For the record, I should be "cured" after the chemo of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (thank goodness). It is just a matter of getting through it.

Anyone else gone through this?

I'm surprised no other lap band person has had cancer. Oh well, live and learn. What a great helping community!

I did chemo both ways, filled and unfilled. Unfilling my band has caused problems with never finding the right restriction again, i unfilled on the advice of my oncologist, not my lapband surgeon, who later told me there was really no need.

My personal advice would be to take medication for nausea and refux and to leave your band alone. Assess the situation when youre though all of this. Good luck!

Thanks to thoe who have replied! So far I'm keeping the band filled. My heartburn has subsided so I'm feeling more optimistic.

Thanks again!

My name is Debbie. I have Hodgkins Lymphoma. 9 days ago I went thru my first round of chemo. It was brutal! I have this burning lava fire ball in the center of my chest just below the sternum. My oncologist thinks it's just bad acid reflux. I threw up violently a few times the 2nd day after chemo. I'm worried I've ripped or dislodged my lap band!!!! I've never experienced such awful pain with no let up. I don't know what to do. Has any one gone thru chemo with a lap band?

My name is Debbie. I'm undergoing chemo for Hodgkins lymphoma. 12 years ago I had lap band surgery and lost almost 100 lbs. I have not had a fill in 9 years. The pain I'm experiencing in my stomach after each chemo session is almost unbareable! And I'm convinced it is due to the lap band. I want it removed but can't afford the cost. I'm almost considering stopping cancer treatment . I haven't been able to work in a month. Desperate for any suggestions. Betelnut, I hope and pray you are cancer free now. How did the rest of your chemo treatments go with the lap band?

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
