Young And Ready But A Little Worried.

Recommended Posts

My name is Jacob. It seems to me I'm very young to be having this surgery since I'm only 19 but I am very over weight, I feel ready though.

One thing that keeps bothering me though, I have been overweight most of my life and I'm terrified that i will have lots of extra skin. It may sound shallow but I don't think I could handle it. I would always be thinking about it and it absolutely would stop me from doing a lot of things that I enjoy.

My doctor and other people that have had weight loss surgery have told me I'm so tall and young that I shouldn't be worried about extra skin, it should just fit back to me. One thing is though, no one understands that I'm having second thoughts about this because I'm so terrified. My weight is in the 350 area and my height is 6'2.

Some one please give me advice. I need this surgery I don't want this to stop me but I'm really giving it second thoughts.

Yes, you are young, but that means that several things will work in your favor:

You are male, and have a higher metabolism to work with.

You are young, your skin has more elasticity to regain a shape to fit your reduced weight. If your skin does not look the way you want it to, there are reconstructive surgeries which will tighten your skin.

It may help to see a therapist to address your fears about surgery. If you are not emotionally committed to the surgery, you may resent or regret your decision in the future. The fear you write about is normal for someone your age, especially if you have never had any surgery before.

Good luck with working through your anxieties. There are many knowledgeable people on this forum who are willing to share their experiences with you...

If you do have extra skin then you can have plastic surgery . Far better to have lost the weight and need the extra surgery than to still be obese with all the healthrisks that brings.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
