Concerned About Flying After Surgery

Recommended Posts

I just finished all my pre-surgery test yesterday. I am schedued to meet with my doctor on 02/01/12 to schedule my surgery date. Her assistant told me that it would more than likely be 2 weeks from the 02/01 date. I am concerned because I am scheduled for a business trip at the end of the month (02/27). Do any of you know if I should postpone my surgery to after my trip?? will it matter or will a flight complicate my recovery?

I plan on telling my doctor about the trip and asking her for her advise..... But it seems like I am stressing out over this because #1 I want to schedule the surgery asap and #2 I cant cancel my trip

I was banded in FL on January 6th and flew back home to MD on the 21st. I had no problem at all flying and I honestly could have flown earlier than that.

I have a history of embolisms following surgery, due to flying after breaking my ankle, and all my dr said was wait 2-3 weeks. Maybe try to meet the surgeon earlier, or maybe when you express concern about flying they'll do surgery sooner than 2 weeks after that appointment.

I did a 14-hour, non-stop flight 3 weeks after surgery and it was fine. I made sure to get up and walk around as much as possible. The best advice will probably be your doctor's! :)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
