Hi my name is Kim, AKA Grace. New to this site. I have completed my pre op diet. Lost aprox 11lbs. Tomorrow is my surgery date. Wondering if there are any words of wisdom for after surgery. Really excited and super nervous...I am ready for this journey.

Hi Kim. I just had surgery two weeks ago and I'm doing great and here's my advice: You should get pain meds at the hospital...my advice is between doses don't let yourself get too uncomfortable before you take something. I'm not saying you should take the meds all the time or something, but don't wait until you feel REAL bad before taking it. STAY ON A PAIN MANAGEMENT SCHEDULE. 2) you will be super bloated and gassy from surgery (they put air in your abdomen during surgery) so my advice is use a heating pad on your stomach on mediium heat. It helps with the gas and so does getting up and walking as much as you can. I kept falling asleep from the pain meds and didn't walk like i was supposed to so i got some cramping in my legs and the gas was worse. 3) drink as much Water as you can taking a few sips per hour. 4) DON'T EAT Jello TOO SOON for some reason, and this might just have been me, but it didn't sit well in my stomach, so try a little before committing to big bites. Those are my little tips. I'm sure things will go great and good luck!

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
