Esophageal Spasms After Lap Band Surgery

Recommended Posts

I had surgery on 5 days ago on Oct. 4th and Im having a really hard time. The first few days I had a lot of pain from the gas and a lot of nausea but what concerns me most are the spasms I'm having around my band area. They come and go all day long - when im sitting, talking, walking - various times. I've only had tea and Water the past 5 days at room tempature like the doctor recomended but I'm becoming very depressed. All the info on-line suggest I should be feeling better by now but the spasms and tightness are really painful and I've spent most of the past 2 days crying and regretting my decision to have the surgery. I spoke to the nurse and she assured me that this will pass but some of the info i read on-line made it sound like they wouldnt. Has anyone else had this problem? Im feeling really hopeless right now.

It is only day 4 since your surgery. Calm down. Sometimes it is not so good to read what others think and feel like after they had their surgery. We all heal differently. Take care of yourself. Do lots of walking, it will help. Good luck and call your surgeon's office if you think something is wrong. Karen

Like the above person said we all heal differently and let me tell you I thought I would bounce back a lot quicker than I thought. I called the nurse a couple times thinking there had to be something wrong other than the normal healing process. I just had surgery 9/12 and I just started feeling 100% normal about a week ago. I was definitely not one of those people that could have back at work within a week. Just try to relax and get rest but do your walking too. Good luck!

I can certainly agree with Dawn, I had unrealistic expectations on how I was going to bounce back too, because of reading some of the postings in the forum. I was banded Tuesday and I haven't had a lot of energy, I remember reading that people went right back to work and some were out shopping, etc. etc. I had to make myself get up and move around when my body was telling me to lay down, then I had to take a look at a lot of different reasons, my age, along with the banding, I had two hernia repairs, I have a Vitamin D deficiency (can't take the pills right now). Living in the Midwest we have had some beautiful temperatures this week and I couldn't get up enough energy to go out to take a walk to enjoy it...My brother picked me up yesterday and took me out for a drive to visit our Dad in No. Chicago, and today I feel much better, though not 100% myself..

Now reading Dawns posting confirms, we are all different and I reiterate that to you, I thought I would be back to work in 1 week, however my surgeon put on my FMLA papers 2-3 weeks.. I now know I will take advantage of at least 2 full weeks off.. I'm not experiencing any pain, it's just my energy level and each day it's minutely better than the day before.

Hang it there, we will all get there, but at different paces..:)

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
