What should I expect after surgery..tell me about your experience

Recommended Posts

I dont know anyone who has had the surgery. I am scheduled on Thursday. I am dying to know what to expect..I have made this decision and trying not to think about it. I said I have had enough with being over weight and am paying CASH..ouch..that's the main reason I have not told anyone..

hey Cyndie...

Congrats on ur date n welcome on board :)

I too paid cash btw :)

I've been banded for 3 weeks... everyone has somehow a different experience, but for me it was fairly good thank God...

Right after surgery u shd be on a lot of pain meds so it wont be too bad... for me the 1st 2 days were the hardest, I had pain in my port side and I had terrible nausea ... I spent the night in the hospital and asked the doctor for sth for it so I can get back home... by the end of the 2nd day it was totally gone... however a lot of ppl dont experience that at all...

Some ppl have terrible gas pain but mine was very tolerable... U'll need to try to walk as much as ur body can as this helps a lot wth the gas...

U'll feel better by the day and by the end of the 1st week U'll be feeling much much better :)

I had fluids diet for 1 week (it differs from 1 dr to another) u ll be dying to chew... and would appreciate mashed food more than ever laugh.gif

1 great advice I read here b4 surgery is having a pillow to hold to my stomach on the way bk from the hospital...

Hope tht helps and plz let me know if u have any questions :)

there is a thread on here about surgery day stories, where people have posted their experiences, you'll get to see how different it is for everyone.

my surgery was on a friday and i went back to work the following thurs(and i'm a therapist, so a pretty laborous job). i was in a lot of pain the first 2 days, but everyday was better. i was banded on may 20th and i'm a slow loser. i have gone down froma 20 to a 16, but the scale seems to be stuck around 18-20 pounds...ugh. i dont know if you are single, but i am and i needed someone to stay with me the first two nights, mostly to get in/out of bed, cuz that was extremly painful. i didnt have an appetite for like 3 weeks. i had the left shoulder gas pain you hear about and i still get it from time to time..ugh! it helps to have a good support system in place. hope that helps some. feel free to add me as a friend and PM me any specific questions you may have. best wishes!

Also i found keeping a pillow on my tummy and ice felt so good. i also could not sleep in my bed 4 3 weeks couch just felt so much better. The third day and so on felt pretty bad but by the end of the week you should feel lots better. The first day I thought there is NO WAY ppl go back 2 work only after a week, but I did and felt good.

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
