New from Canada

Hey guys,

My name is Mandi, and I am very close to finalizing my decision to get the lapband. I should have a definite decision tomorrow! I'm super excited, and a little scared.

I'm 25 years old, about 275-280 lbs. I started gaining weight when I was about 9 years old, and it hasn't let up! Despite many many many dieting attempts, I've continued to gain. Like I'm sure most of you, I dieted and was sometimes successful, but that always ended up with me gaining back my loss and then some.

I had originally been dead set on getting the RNY. But, the wait lists in Canada are just not acceptable for me. I know people do it, and more power to them. If I wasn't lucky enough to be able to borrow the money from family, I probably would be waiting too, if not for an RNY, then to save up enough money for the lapband (which probably woulda taken more than 6 years!) I don't want to know what life will be like for me in 6 years if I have to wait. I've wasted so much of my life already being fat, and I just want to get on with things. So after much research, I've decided that 'hey, I guess the lapband really can work for me."

I don't really know how much I want to weigh. 140 sounds good, but.. who knows. I've never been 140, at least not as an adult, when 140 is an acceptable weight. I might be just fine at 180. I dunno. We'll see when I get there.

So that's about all for me. You may be hearing from me again soon, with a WOOOO HOOOO! Got my consult date! post.

Mandi

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
