Sugery Yesterday... some questions?

Recommended Posts

Ok, so I was banded yesterday. I have been sleeping a lot, but every time I wake up I am getting the hiccups very badly (ouch!), and then throwing up. I have been taking the anti nausea medication.... does anyone have any other suggestions??

Also my back is KILLING me!! I think maybe it's where I have been sleeping so much, but I just don't know. I had the sharp pains in my shoulders this morning from the gas, but that is gone now. Any feedback would be very much appreciated.

Thanks!

Nathalie

The hiccups are from irritation to your diaphragm, and they should go away when the swelling goes down. I'd definitely call my surgeon and ask for a stronger anti-nausea med, you really need to give your stomach a chance to heal!

I'd lay on a heating pad for your back, or try sleeping in a recliner or on a lot of pillows so you're upright.

And just a tip... my surgeon told me that patients who sleep a lot after surgery often become dehydrated because you're not awake to drink as much, so MAKE SURE you're getting all of your liquids in. I hope you feel better soon!

Awww, thank you! biggrin.gif I haven't told most people IRL about my band (just my immediate family and one friend) so I like hanging out here- I get to talk about the band and learn, learn, learn.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
