Four Days till Banding!

Recommended Posts

Hi! My name is Lauren. I am having my Lap-Band Surgery on May 3rd at SIX O'CLOCK in the AM!!! Early huh? I am 22 years old, currently weigh 260 lbs with a BMI of 41. I have type II diabetes, hypertension and PCOS :( (Really hoping to get rid of the diabetes and hypertension. not fun...).

Right now I am struggling through my two week liquid diet. Three days left and I feel just absolutely horrible about myself. I wont lie... I've cheated a bit. Easter fell about halfway through my diet and my doc told me I could have a SMALL meal that day. Other than that I was to drink two Optifast shakes, two Bariatric Advantage shakes and Jell-O. Needless to say, my "small meal" on Easter didn't turn out so small...

My grandma died last weekend.. so I ate a "small meal" the day of her funeral, another Easter at lunch and another Easter at dinner. Now I didn't go completely overboard on any of my "meals", but still feel just as horrible. Since then, I have stuck to it EXCEPT for one small tortilla on like four different days (only eighty calories a piece).

I don't know why I keep eating them. I just can't seem to stop myself.

I have stayed WELL UNDER my 1000 calorie a day limit (except on Easter) and have been doing 2-3 hours of fairly intensive yard work a day but have only lost like 3 lbs. :(

I'm scared to death that the doctor is going to say he won't do my surgery. What do you think?

I understand why they do the liquid diet, and I think its a good thing. I also know that some doctors don't require it at all. I'm just wondering if a little cheating will cause them to not go through with the surgery?

NEED SUPPORT PLEASE!!!!

I think the mantra that I am going to repeat to myself is ....it's in the past, don't beat yourself up, just move forward from here.

the liquid diet ain't easy. i am on it right along with you and my surgery is May 4th, so believe me, I know how hard it is. But even with the band, you are going to inevitably eat something that you shouldn't, or eat too much of something, or eat the slider foods that go down easy. don't throw the baby out with the bathwater though, it's in the past, don't beat yourself up, just move forward from here. say it with me....it's in the past...you get the idea.

if you linger on the "but i messed up so what's the point?" you will miss the point. obviously i am getting the band because i have been messing up my whole life. it's hard to change a lifetime of habits and go from 60 to zero. but for the most part, you did the right thing. focus on what good things you did. don't beat yourself up, just move forward from here. you can do this!

Ladies it will be awesome. There are ups and downs, as long as the scale is going down you are doing good. My continued advice to edvice to everyone is follow the doctors orders and you will be so thrilled. I agree, one meal is not worth blowing the whole day. Instead of looking at one pound or ten pounds at a time, look at one meal at a time. I promise it is so worth it. I PROMISE!!!!! Stay on here, keep posting and keep asking questions. use the knowledge of those who have been there done it and are making it. What else can I help you with?

Hi Lauren... My lap-band surgery is also scheduled for May 3rd, but my doctor has not put me on any kind of pre-op diet - liquid or otherwise. I wz just told to fast for 8 Hours before arriving at the hospital at 8am that day... Do u know why exactly some doctors have u do the pre-op liquid diet thing?? I am reeeally nervous. I am on antidepressants which I have to take on a daily basis and cannot stop suddenly.. Will that be a problem with my post-op liquid diet?? By the way, i also have a BMI of 41 :)

Hello "band twin" :)

Let me be the first to tell you you absolutely lucked out on not having a pre-op liquid diet! Because it is HORRIBLE! Haha!

THEY (my nurses) told me that the point of doing a liquid diet was to shrink the liver (and the layer of fat around other organs). I'm not completely sure what the point of that is, but I figure they have a medical degree so I guess I will just go with it! :) (Personally I think its just to watch people suffer...)

I have read where several people haven't had to do a pre-op diet, some only have to do like two days, some have to do liquids but they also get to have like one meal/day and I read where someone had to do like a whole month of solid liquids! ! ! (I wouldn't make it that long...) So I guess its just the doctor's preference.. I'm sure your doc knows what he/she's doing!

I am also on anti-depressants (among several other things). They told me not to take any of my medications the morning of my surgery... But I'm taking mine to the hospital with me. So maybe take them with you and ask if you can take them when you wake up? Because I'm pretty sure the nurses won't want people crying all over them (I know I will be if I skip! Hehe!)

As far as after surgery with the post-op diet, you should be able to take your pills normally. I was told I could take any medicines as long as they are smaller than an M&M. If they are bigger than that I am suppose to talk to the doc that prescribed them and see if there are any alternatives. This wasn't a problem for me though. I DID have to find a chewable Multi-Vitamin though, I went with Centrum chewables...

You are definitely not alone on the nervous department though! I haven't been able to sleep at night from being nervous! I just keep telling myself that I am doing it to help ME! So that I will feel better, have better health and be happier :) So it IS worth it! Just TRY not to worry about it... I'm sure everything will turn out fine! And remember you are in good hands with your surgeons, they've done all of this before!

But good luck! And best wishes! :)

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
