DOES PROTEIN REALLY MATTER.......!!???????

Recommended Posts

I'm trying to start a tread on this topic.....all feed back is helpful to say the least and Thank You in advance... So yesterday i had my first fill in my A.P. Lapband.....size 13 cc band 2 cc was put in it....Anyway i was told to consume at least 82 g of Protein daily by the physician assistant at my office......great office by the way....but i guess I'm wondering does the protein really make a difference in weight loss and how do you get that much protein in one day?? Any suggestions or ideas will be great.....

Yes protien makes a difference. It will help you feel full longer and keep you from loosing muscle. I was told 60 gms but I think the more the better. I go for lean sources of protien like fish and chicken. Protien shakes can help up your protien level, especially if you don't have much of an appetite. Best wishes!

Yes... Protein fills you up quicker and keeps you fuller longer. Also, it builds muscle and muscle burns more calories that fat. There is a little bit of protein in almost everything we eat. Keep track of what you eat on fitday. It will tell you exactly how much protien is in food. You will get so you learn what to eat and how much. 82 g sounds like a lot. My Dr. wants me to get 60 - 70, but to be honest I usually get more than 80. Good Luck!

Yes. Protein helps curb your appetite and since we as bandsters are eating less, it helps us get from one meal to the next. Also, the more active you are (i.e., exercise), the more protein you need. Protein also helps protect and repair cells, so during the healing process it is crucial.

I drink a ready-made Premiere brand Protein shake (available at Costco) for Breakfast every morning while I'm driving to work. It's 11 ounces, has 160 calories, and 30 grams of Protein. So just that drink would give you more than a third of what you need every day. Easy to do. Tastes pretty good, too.

Getting enough Protein also stops bone and muscle loss, as well as helping to keep your hair from falling out. So yes, it matters.

At my last fill, my RN told me to have a whey protein shake (25grams of protein) in the morning instead of the cottage cheese I was eating. My band is tight in the morning, so I have to do soft foods. I was thinking she was crazy because I would be starving by 8:00am. However, getting that big boost of protein in the morning really helps and I don't get hungry until 10:00am and can have a little snack. So, I agree with everyone that protein is important.

Good luck to ya,

Julia

I'd consider myself to be as or more successful than many, and I'd chalk half of it up to serious exercise and the other to Protein consumption. I never tracked it or anything, but I haven't had a bagel or rice or Pasta since I was banded while I drown myself in chicken and fish. It helps curb muscle loss, keeps you full for longer and let's you skip carbs and still be satiated. To me it's a magic bullet. In the beginning I drank lots of shakes and didn't really know what to eat but now it's second nature. Protein is your friend! Best of luck!

Its really not hard to get that amount of Protein. For example, the last 2 days I got 114 and 117 grams of protein each day, and both days were only around 950 calories. Now not every day is like that, but for me its easy to get proteinin.

Each day I had a shake for Breakfast, throughout the day I also ate tuna, string cheese, greek yogurt, edemame, deli ham....

SUPER important. Previous poster was right. If you are eating few calories and burning a lot (say exercising); your body will burn muscle like the heart muscle. This is why people with eating disorders have heart attacks.

If you take in enough Protein, 60G woman. It helps reduce your hunger, it gives you energy like gas in the tank, and it's important in the beginning so that you don't lose your hair. They claim that if you get on a protein regiment, and stay on it. You wont have to worry about your hair. I have not had a problem.

Just get as much as you can, and eat more Protein than anything else. Hard Protein like chicken, meat, fish.. It keeps you full because it's harder to digest.

I don't necessarily think it's important to go overboard on protein though. Just make sure the main part of your meal is some sort of protein MOST of the time. I get all mine in and I'm still losing my hair. Which happens from excessive weight loss and the trauma of surgery.

Mmm 150g of Protein a day :) Short answer, yes, protein is helpful/necessary in many ways, but do not neglect other macronutrients, such as fat, either :)

Iʻm roughly 6 weeks post-op this morning and have begun to feel like a normal human, with a normal human body again. I started introducing solid foods and pill forms of medications/supplements a couple of weeks ago and it's really amazing to eat meals with my family again, despite the fact that my portions are so much smaller than theirs.
I live on the island of Oʻahu and spend a lot of time in the water- for exercise, for play,  and for spiritual & mental health. The day I had my month out appointment with my surgeon, I packed all my gear in my truck, anticipating his permission to get back in the ocean. The minute I walked out of that hospital I drove straight to the shore and got in that water. Hallelujah! My appointment was at 10 am. I didn't get home until after 5 pm.
I'm down 31 pounds since the day of surgery and 47 since my pre-op diet began, with that typical week long stall occurring at three weeks. I'm really starting to see some changes lately- some of my clothing is too big, some fits again. The most drastic changes I notice however are in my face. I've also noticed my endurance and flexibility increasing. I was really starting to be held up physically, and I'm so grateful that I'm seeing that turn around in such short order.
My general disposition lately is hopeful and motivated. The only thing that bugs me on a daily basis still is the way those supplements make my house smell. So stink! But I just bought a smell proof bag online that other people use to put their pot in. My house doesn't stink anymore.

Oh yeah, something I wanted to rant about, a billing dispute that cropped up 3 months ago.
Surgery was in August of 2023. A bill shows up for over $7,000 in January. WTF? I asks myself. I know that I jumped through all of the insurance hoops and verified this and triple checked that, as did the surgeon's office. All was set, and I paid all of the known costs before surgery.
A looong story short, is that an assistant surgeon that was in the process of accepting money from my insurance company touched me while I was under anesthesia. That is what the bill was for. But hey, guess what? Some federal legislation was enacted last year to help patients out when they cannot consent to being touched by someone out of their insurance network. These types of bills fall under something called, "surprise billing," and you don't have to put up with it.
      https://www.cms.gov/nosurprises
I had to make a lot of phone calls to both the surgeon's office and the insurance company and explain my rights and what the maximum out of pocket costs were that I could be liable for. Also had to remind them that it isn't my place to be taking care of all of this and that I was going to escalate things if they could not play nice with one another.
Quick ending is that I don't have to pay that $7,000+. Advocate, advocate, advocate for yourself no matter how long it takes and learn more about this law if you are ever hit with a surprise bill.

Some days I feel like an infiltrator... I'm participating in society as a "thin" person. They have no idea that I haven't always been one of them! 🤣

Thank you everyone for your well wishes! I totally forgot I wrote an update here... I'm one week post op today. I gained 15 lbs in water weight overnight because they had to give me tons of fluids to bring my BP up after surgery! I stayed one night in the hospital. Everything has been fine except I seem to have picked up a bug while I was there and I've been running a low grade fever, coughing, and a sore throat. So I've been hydrating well and sleeping a ton. So far the Covid tests are negative.
I haven't been able to advance my diet past purees. Everything I eat other than tofu makes me choke and feels like trying to swallow rocks. They warned me it would get worse before it gets better, so lets hope this is all normal. I have my follow up on Monday so we'll see. Living on shakes and soup again is not fun. I had enough of them the first time!! LOL

Still purging all of the larger clothing. This morning, a shirt that I ADORED wearing ended up on top. Hard to let it go, but it was also hard to let go of those habits that also no longer serve my highest good. Onward and upward!
