suggestion re protein powder for newbies

Recommended Posts

hi all

i'm 4 days post op and feeling great today! i just wanted to share some info for people about to have surgery that i wish i had known before going through a lot of trial and error. i ended up spending WAY too much money on different Protein powders because they were bad. some wouldn't dissolve at all in Water and were a chunky mess, some were gritty, etc. so here's my suggestion, which you can take or leave.

i bought like 5 different kinds of Protein Powder and EAS seemed the best to be in terms of taste and it also dissolves completely in water when you just stir it. no blender needed! i bought this cup with straw at target and put one scoop in and about 4 oz of water and stir it with the straw and it works great! washes right out without having to scrub gunk at the bottom. you just have to be really careful about using a straw because you can gulp too fast. you need to take tiny, slow sips out of it!

chocolate and vanilla because you tired of just one really fast.

I like Syntrax Nectar (I've only tried Roadside Lemonade and Crystal Sky thus far). They blend great in my Vitamix blender.

unjury chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry sorbet are also good.

I wouldn't suggest using a straw early on. Try buying a blender cup instead. They sell them at GNC, Vitamin Shoppe, etc. They're a tall-ish bottle with a wisk ball so your Protein won't settle at the bottom.

Also most companies nowadays offer free or relatively cheap samples of their Protein before you buy a big tub of it. I know of a few who were successful in emailing/calling companies and explaining that they just had surgery and were looking to try out a few different brands of protein.

Try the MUSCLE MILK LIGHT. It's 195 in calories, 25G of Protein. That's pretty good, and it's low in sugar. Their chocolate is terrable, but there Vanilla Creme is Fantastic. Also

I posted a add from the person I buy from on ebay. They are both very good, and it's nice to have a variety.

Chek it out, and see what you think.

Shirley.

I tried the Syntrax nectar chocolate Truffle last night mixed in some skim milk. It was great. Just like the old chocolate milk I had as a kid using Nestle's Quick. Again, no lumps or particles floating after blending in my Vitamix.

I've been using the ready-to-drink Oh Yeah brand. It does come in an 8 oz. bottle and has 15 grams of Protein in that and the 14 oz bottle has 32 grams of protein. It has 220 calories in the 14 oz bottle but I can drink it and that is important. It isn't going to do me any good no matter how many grams of protein and how little calories if I can't get it down. I'd rather have 20 extra calories and be able to drink the stuff. I've gotten samples from ww.vitalady.com and the Dessert line is pretty decent. I've have samples of the Unjury and haven't tried those yet. I've also heard that you can mix your shakes with SF pudding mixes to add some flavors. Thanks for the tip, EAS is one that I haven't tried yet.

Another route to go is to go to GNC. I went there this past weekend because I wanted to see what they recommend. Im having my surgery on April 5th and wanted to be ready before hand. The lady gave me a big bag full of samples of all their Protein powders. I too find the EAS ones pretty good and one of the most tolerable. Thanks for the info on the cup at Target. I am heading there today I might pick one up! Good Luck!

here's the EAS (i bought it at target but they don't sell it online). also, i highly recommend when you find one you like that you buy both chocolate and vanilla because you tired of just one really fast.

Thanks for the tip. I like unjury unflavored in Crystal Light, but I think I will go to GNC and get some samples as well. I'm sure I'll get sick of the stuff I have soon.

I also got some samples that I ordered on line. I think the site was 'vitalady' something...

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
