Just Starting Out!!

Recommended Posts

hello everyone. I'm new to the forum. After about a year of thinking and researching about the lap-band, I decided to pursue it. After attending a seminar, I was informed of the three types of WLS. I was wavering over the options but decided that the lap-band would be best for me. I believe the least invasive WLS would benefit me best.I have started the pre-op testing & hopefully all will go well.I really expect to be successful. I don't have small children but I want to be healthy for them and me. It seem that I will be able to get a lot of info and support from this forum.

I have done all my testing and everything came out good... except they found out I had a hernia above my stomach.. so when they go into do the Lap Band they can take care of that at the sametime.. whoohoo...it really explains alot...but I have to wait until March to do the surgery...the insurance lap.. new year starts in March but they approved me ... thats all that matters... now I am scared of what to do next.. my mom bought me the Weight loss surgery for dummies book... WOW that is so awesome.. breaks it down completely and gives you options and explains everything and some worries.

The only thing I am unsure of is what is a suppliment they say to take a sugar free liquid suppliment... do they mean the drinks.. and if so.. what is the clear liquid one?????.....lol

By suppliment I wonder if they mean Vitamins. I take chewables, most of them are going to have some calories but between my multi and Calcium it's probably 30 cal. a day.

Think of the time before surgery as a time to modify your food habits and over all food philosophy. If you have to start slowly. When you go out most full service restaurants let you make substitutions. If you order a hamburger get a baked potato instead off french fries; or get grilled chicken with a low fat sauce (BBQ etc) on the side.

More than half of this journey is mental. I don't think enough doctors stress that. Luckily mine did. I think reading the book is a great start. While thin people make bad food choices too; most of the time they eat healthy and smaller portions than you or I. If you have a friend that eats correctly follow their lead. It can be hard to come up with ideas on your own.

Start an exercise program now. Is it hard to go to the gym when you are over weight? Ah Yes. I highly recommend swimming. When you are overweight it HURTS to exercise. Swimming is low impact and you can do it no matter what you weigh. I prefer lap swimming with help of a Water proof MP3 player. But you might like Water aerobics.

I got the lap-band because of it being the least invasive. Good luck to you.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
