Three Weeks Post-Band

Recommended Posts

I'm just over three weeks post-banding and hiatal hernia repair (11/29/2010). The weight loss has been fantastic so far (30 pounds since my 11/24 pre-op), so I'm pleased, and my incisions have healed well.

But I'm still not feeling great. I'm experiencing the most painful hiccups of my life, cannot burp, and just feel generally uncomfortable when I eat or drink. I chew food well and eat it slowly but can feel every movement down the esophagus into the stomach. My appetite is pretty much gone, which is fine with me, and it feels like the band has already been tightened even though my first fill is two weeks away.

Can someone tell me if these are just the growing pains of adjustment to the band? Thanks.

Hi,

Are you sure they didn't put Fluid in your band at the time of surgery? I'm finding that there seems to be a higher prevalence of people having difficulties like what you mentioned that there is already fluid in the band at the time of surgery. Why not call your doc and ask? Maybe also give them the scoop on how you're feeling.

I would talk to your doc. If they did put Fluid in during surgery, you may need to have some taken out. You sound like your just a little to tight. Have you had any vomiting? Hope you feel better soon.

Thanks to both of you for your replies. You identified some great questions for me to ask.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
