GAS!

Recommended Posts

I had surgery Monday and am still having gas problems. Did anyone else have gas that lasted this long? It's getting annoying!

Was banded on Tuesday and I've still got some gas every now and then... I wish the weather wasn't so terrible here or I'd go for a nice long walk...

Yes I was banded December 3, and I had awful gas pain in my left shoulder and chest. The clinic recommended heat, walking around, and deep tissue massage. I had my husband massage my shoulder as much as possible and I have to say that is what helped the most. My pain lasted at least 6-7 days. Hope this helps.

I got banded on 11/29. I literally had gas until the 2 week mark. There are two different reasons for gas. One is the left over gas from inflating your abdomen for the band. That takes about a day or two to completely absorb into the body, until then you'll have an irritated diaphragm (from the gas) which causes chest and shoulder pain. The second is the nature of the digestive system. The entire digestive system is in constant motion called peristalsis. When a person has surgery in the abdomen the whole system either slows significantly or stops for a short period of time. It can take almost two weeks for some individual's digestive system to get back in synchronized motion. Until then, you'll have gas, bloat, and other issues.

Personally, I did not find Gas X of significant help. Walking did help some as did laying on my left or right side on the floor for periods of time. Laying on my back caused gas to accumulate directly under my band, and it did not want to escape. It was very uncomfortable. The gas got easier to deal with as well as pass as time went on.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
