Another question about that first fill

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! Another newbie here, my husband and I both had surgery about a month ago, and I'm trying to ease my mind about my first fill...

I had my surgery on June 25, and I have the Realize band. I had no restriction after surgery, but have lost 15 pounds with trying to eat the way I'm supposed to eat, and trying to stop at "not hungry", instead of progressing all the way to "full". I had my first fill yesterday, and I'm lucky enough that my doctor likes to do aggressive fills - I got 6.5 CCs. He took me to the point where I could still get Water down but could kind of feel it in my chest (if that makes sense?) and then backed off just enough that i didn't have that sensation anymore.

My question is this - I've been eating (cream) Soups yesterday and today, it seems like I've been feeling just as hungry as before, and the Soup and Protein drinks don't cause any major noticable feelings of fullness. I ate a whole can of soup for lunch and while I did seem more full afterwards, it was still a whole can of soup! Is this just a normal occurance because they're liquids, and the real noticable difference will come when I start back up with solids? I'm sure I'll be able to deal with it, it's just somewhat of a bummer to think that even 6.5 might not have been enough, and I have to wait another month to go back for another fill!

Not another question about first fills! (rolling my eyes!)..totally teasing you! :)

Yes, this is most likely due to the fact that you are consuming liquids. Think of the band like a funnel. When you pour in a liquid, the funnel slows it down a little bit, but it goes through pretty quickly.

When you eat solids is when the tool of the band kicks in to help. The food remains in the small pouch and leaves slowly through the small opening created by the band and the fill. The smaller the opening, the slower it drains, the longer we feel full.

When you get onto solids, and if you now have a good restriction level (rememeber, sometimes it takes more than one fill) you should feel the band working for you.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.
