I have an appointment with my pcp tomorrow so that I can get my letter of medical necessity. I'm nervous because I don't know what her views are on the lap band. If she's not on board with the idea then I'll be scrambling to find a new doctor who IS on board.

She can be a little intimidating at times. I used to see just her PA but the PA got married and moved away.

She has advertisements for a new type of liposuction in her office so you would think that she wouldn't be opposed to the lap band. Or at least I hope that's how it is.

I was nervous, too. I searched on the American Medical Association's website, and found some articles about success rates of gastric banding. Then I made a chart of weight histories for the past 5 years (with photos). It turns out, my doctor was aware of the data, and agreed that banding is a good option for permanent weight loss. I hope you have a positive experience with your doctor tomorrow.

I know how you feel. My PCP refused to refer me as he said the band was too dangerous and there were too many complications. I think he probably also told me that I just needed to diet and exercise more!

elcee, so after he told you that, did you go find another doctor on your own or did your surgeon's team help you find another one?

I live in Australia so our health system works differently to the US one.I knew which surgeon I wanted so I phoned and made an appointment directly. I was terrified that as I didn't have a referral it would be a problem but it wasn't. I must have checked at least 3 times that it wouldn't affect whether or not my insurance would pay. It only became a problem when I needed a fill and needed to claim the rebate from medicare.I couldn't get the rebate without a referral so I went back to the Dr's. The original Dr had left and the new one had a totally different aatitude and was happy to give me the referral. Plus they couldn't refuse as I was already banded!

Went and saw my primary doctor today. All that worry was for nothing. She said I was an excellent candidate for the surgery and she would have her portion of the papers ready for me by Friday. I feel sooo relieved. My nutrition consult is tomorrow and my psych eval is next week.

I'm on my way!:scared2:

Glad you've got your PCP's support! I too was a ball of nerves going into that appointment. She can be intimidating as well and is also a skinny little thing! I was afraid she'd be anti-WLS. And all for nothing! Her only concern was that I was a little young to be considering such a drastic change. I flat out told her, "Do you want me to wait until I am diabetic and have high blood pressure?" She laughed, said I was right, and told me I was an ideal candidate as well! :smile2:

Looks like you got your ticker figured out, it looks nice! That's one heck of a weight loss!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
