Questions!!! Cost, band type?

Recommended Posts

Hi all! I am in Syracuse, NY and have United HealthCare... insurance covers 80% for me.

I went to my info meeting in March... First appointment last month. I've had most of my tests done and meet with the nutritionist and psych in 2 weeks. Dr said late summer is a reasonable guess for surgery... so...

What was the cost of your surgery (especially if you have UHC) and how much did you have to pay before and after surgery? I haven't done all of the paperwork yet and know I will have my answers then, but I'm anxious to save enough for the surgery. Fiance and I are cutting back everywhere to make sure we can get the surgery in (so we can start a family in the next couple of years...).

ALSO- I have to choose between the LapBand and the Realize band... the dr doesn't seem to have a preference and said we could flip a coin if I liked because he didn't prefer one over the other. I've got about 150 to lose to get to "normal".

Thanks for any thoughts, answers, advice, or whatever you have to offer!!!

I'd call your doctor's office-- I'm sure they know how much your insurance will pay, and what amount will be left over and billed to you.

You'll also want to find out if fills are covered- completely, 80% or what, and how much you'll pay out of pocket for that.

My insurance pays 80% also and I am paying 2k out of pocket for the surgery and then whatever the hospital charges me.

Three months and four days ago... I was in Costa Rica having a life changing surgery! Yesterday we had a followup visit with Dr. Esmeral via video chat and this morning my middle number changed.  I'm down 47lbs and two pants sizes. I can wear a Large tshirt for the first time in like... 14 years! Woot!! Everything is going great. I have zero regrets. I went down to the riverwalk with a friend and walked 2 miles on Monday without even getting fatigued. And no more snoring or chugging pickle juice for crazy leg cramps! I need to go to the gym more... I'm making new shirts next week so that will motivate me. LOL But I'm also just not as TIRED all the time! I have a LONG way to go...but seeing the progress on the scales and in the mirror is a huge motivator!! Thank you all for cheering me on and supporting me!!

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.
