I know we are supposed to have 70 grams of Protein a day, my question is: Is 70 the max or the minimum? Is there any "harm" or "benefit" in having more? Can I have "too much" protein and if so, what is harm in doing that? If I drink 2 Isopure drinks that's 80 grams plus the protein in any food I eat so I know I am going over 70 grams a day.

Your thoughts/input please.

Actually, I think, the amount of Protein you are supposed to have per day is based on your weight. Here's a bit more about that: How Much Protein Per Day Should You Eat?

Apparently, it is bad to have too much protein according to this website: Too much protein can harm your body - on MedicineNet.com

I did a google search and here are the rest of the results: too much protein - Google Search

I actually posed this question in the nutrition class I was required to take prior to surgery. My doc's parameters are minimum of 60 g a day but he would like to see you somewhere in the neighborhood of 60-90 g. I asked if there was such a thing as too much Protein and he told me that unless the patient has a kidney problem, the more Protein the merrier. I was also told that it's always good to make sure you are getting plenty of "other" fluids (Water, juice, etc) to make sure you are flushing the protein through.

I wouldn't suggest getting 150+ g's a day but I think you're probably doing fine!

Good luck!!

My doctor wants me on 90 grams of Protein while on liquids and 60 grams as soon as i start mushies and from then on. I told them at my 1 week post-op that i was having a hard time drinking 90 grams of protein a day (I was getting tired of em). I had one nurse tell me that when i get hungry and aren't supposed to eat real food yet drink as much protein as i could stand lol Now i am on mushies and can put fruit in my Protein Shakes so i can easily get the required 60 grams in. It is yummy now!:w00t:

Hope it helps. Pretty much what others have said but sometimes it helps if more than one person confirm it. He told me to at least get 60 grams in and i would be ok

As someone already said, unless you have kidney problems, the excess Protein will not hurt you. Our body does not store protein so it washes out what you don't use.

You should not have large amounts of protein in your urine. Your kidneys filter many substances, including waste products, from your blood. These waste products are then excreted in your urine. Normally, during this filtering process your kidneys retain components — including Proteins — that your body needs. But some diseases and conditions can allow Proteins to slip through the filters of your kidneys, causing protein in urine. Low levels of protein in urine are normal, particularly in younger people after exercise or activity. Protein in urine discovered on a microalbumin test may often be the earliest sign of diabetic kidney damage. The normal range of protein in urine is 0-10mg/de. Anything over that needs to be checked out.

Manda,

You are correct, but we were not discussing excess protein in urine due to a medical problem. The OP was asking if there was a problem in eating too much protein. The responses given that it is not *IF* there is no problem with the kidneys or other medical problems where this would be a symptom of that problem are right on target.

I am a diabetic and my doctors get concerned when I have excess protein in my urine *if* my blood sugar levels are also out of control. They had no problem with me doing Atkins and losing 70 lbs and no problem now with me eating an extremely low carb, high protein diet because it is not due to a medical condition.

After years of researching this topic and many many discussions with my caregivers at the diabetic clinic at MSU Hospital, because it directly affects my health, I believe there is a great deal of misunderstanding about protein in the urine and a high protein/low carb diet so we'll just have to agree to disagree on this one.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
