Do your doctor require any health related test before he performs surgery? If so what test. I have to meet with the surgeon on Jan 22 and i will get my surgery date.

Mine did not require any pre-op testing ...........nothing.

I had no blood drawn, no urine tests, no x-rays ......

Of course it may have been different depending on the paperwork I filled out at the consult, but I personally was not required to do any.

Psych eval; sleep study and release from my cardiologist.

My doctor required chest xray, EKG and blood work. My insurance required me to have a psych eval and nutrition consultation. I am having my surgery on January 15th.

I had to do an Upper GI to confirm a suspected hiatal hernia, a psych evaluation and a slew of bloodwork.

for insurance approval I need a letter and some tests from a Pulmonologist, a psychiatrist, endocrinologist, cardiology-stress test, nutrtionist, sleep study, GI endoscopy. Concerning just the surgery you will need whatever presurgical testing is done by that hospital/doctor (blood, ekg, echocardiogram/stress test)

Before you go to your consult check with your insurance what they require. They are pretty strick with what they want.

Also insurances want documentation of weight loss attempts- be sure to know exactly what they want documented by your doctor or dietician. Mine was 6 mos of back to back diet programs with monthly weigh ins. Another insurance wanted 2 years of a documented BMI over 35. Start doing your testing requirements as soon as you can because it can be a long process. Dont just throw it together hoping you will be approved. Do it right the first time. exactly the way they want so you wont be disappointed if they reject you for surgery. Good Luck!

I was self-pay, so insurance had no say...but my dr required the nutritionist and psych eval, and a cbc and urinalysis. That was it.

My insurance, BCBS of Michigan, required no testing at all. My surgeon required some bloodwork, a psych evaluation, a meeting with the nutritionist, and surgical clearance from my cardiologist.

I agree. My surgeon also required a Pulminology exam. And I think there was one or two more that I can't think of. I spent literally an entire day at the hospital doing testing, only to come back the next week and get my Upper G.I. (you have to go under anesthesia for this).

I haven't had half of these in years and the ones I have had were due to other things, not this surgery.

My surgery won't be for a month though, maybe I am in for a pop quiz.

I didn't have any of these, but I would have jumped through any hoops required. I was so happy that I didn't have to jump thru any.

I was selfpay and that, I'm sure had a lot to do with it.

I had to do Atkins for 2 weeks pre-op and a phone consult with NUT

FWIW- I did not have to undergo anesthesia for my upper GI.

I know they sometimes give a local for an Upper GI Endoscopy, but I just had a regular GI where I drank the stuff, rolled around on the table and tried not to burp. All done in 15 minutes and allowed to return to normal activity immediately after. Drove myself to and from the procedure.
