Why am I hungry and not loosing!

I say all of this with understanding and support so…. 1) Stay off the scale…. 2) According to my doc (and yes, they are ALL different)…the first 6 weeks post surgery is for healing and getting your new eating mechanics down…they are NOT concerned about any weight loss….so any loss is a bonus. 3) You had surgery 5 days ago….come now…if I may ask…how long did it take for you to get to the weight that made you choose WLS….it is NOT going to come off 5 days after surgery. 4) This is not a magic wand…it is a tool and it will take you time to find the perfect spot for optimal weight loss for you….. 5) Everyone IS different….you could be retaining Fluid from surgery…give yourself and your body time to heal….its not even one week yet! 6) I agree with @@dawalsh your body has had a big shock with just the surgery alone…then it had the pre-op and now you are giving it very little calories/nutrition. Your body may be holding on to everything you put in your system because it does not know exactly what is going on yet. 7) If you are concerned check in with your doctor or nutritionist…they are the ones to help most right now! Of course we are here to help….but please cut yourself some slack!!!!!

    Keeping tabs on amounts?

I track what I eat on lapbandjourney.com -- I find it helpful to look at what I eat and compare to other days. There is a chart that shows you how many calories you've burned vs what you've taken in. There is just a lot of good information on that particular sight.

Why is weight loss rate slower with Lap Band?

The reason weight loss is slower with the band is that we absorb 100% of the calories we eat. GB patients only absorb 50% of the calories they eat. Both work but GB has additional healthy risks. The lap band does not stop at 50% of excess weight loss. However, to get to goal you will need to change your lifestyle. Exercise, eat healthier foods and follow the band rules. If you are willing to do that you should be able to lose all excess weight. Some people don't even lose 50% of their excess weight because they make bad choices and eat food that goes right through the band and don't follow the rules. Being successful with the lap band is up to us. The band won't automatically make you lose weight. Same goes for GB patients. If you don't change your lifestyle you can gain all the weight back. I've seen it happen. No matter which surgery you choose you must work with it to be successful for life. It is a great tool! I love my band!
  5. A few of the rules I remember which made me successful at losing 50 lbs. were: >use a salad plate instead of a dinner plate >3 bites of protein, 3 bites of veggie, 1 bite of carb, repeat until satisfied >eat every 3 hours >fill up on protein for snacks, (hard boiled egg with a piece of cheese, cottage cheese, yogurt, chicken breast etc.) >never drink your calories, except for a protein shake >No carbonated drinks > do not frink for 30 min. before and for 30 min after a meal >eat slowly, chew much, small bites >Limit fruit, due to the sugar it converts to Can anyone help me think of anymore? especially designated for lapbanders? I realize all doctors do not give the same instructions.
  6. What I have found about doctors is that there is no consensus whatsover. Some are 2 weeks some 3 some longer and some not at all. It is a bit frustrating. What I have found that is typical is about 2 weeks. 2 or more Protein shakes and one lean protein source, and some vegtables. The first 3 days were tough and then it became easier. I was able to lose 16 pounds on my pre-op diet. Best of luck. My diet averaged about 720 calories per day, Greg

    Just banded on Friday--Feb. 19

Congratulations on being banded! I'm glad to hear that the procedure went well for you. I did not have any immediate gas pain, either. The discomfort snuck up on me a few days later. I would make sure you are walking as much as possible so that you continue to feel well. As far as Protein, post-surgery I was drinking Special K Protein drinks. They have 10g of protein and 5g of Fiber in each one. The fiber is also helpful, as you want to get everything in your body moving again. *smile* I believe they come in chocolate, vanilla & strawberry and are 190 calories each. Good luck on your journey, you'll do great!
  9. How many calories/carbs are you eating a year out? How much exercise are you getting? Are you still losing?
  10. The difference is in what people burn, so that what you have to eat to get that 3,500 calorie deficit differs for everyone, I can do that easily on 1,500 calories a day which is quite a lot for a woman, but that's because I'm very active. The real test is just see how your body goes on that sort of intake. Many people start exercise and then wonder why they havent lost weight - the answer is they consciously or unconsciously eat more. I'd say an increase of almost 400 calories in your daily intake compared with just over 400 burned is not going to result in terrific weight loss, if you were at a steady rate on 1000 or less. But you might be surprised. Perhaps try to keep it to 1200?
  11. Yeah; bandster hell, however, during this time you have to find ways to control what you're eating. Through the stress of a divorce (which I can imagine is hard, I've only experienced it as a child), you've got to find a method to controlling what you eat. Losing 10lbs in a month and 1/2 really isn't too bad, but you can be sure that because of the foods you're eating, you're not gonna lose very easily and your loss will be slower. I've been eating a cup of food ever since I got to solids. While I do eat bread sometimes, pizza and a breadstick is not a healthy food choice. The band is all about finding out what foods you can eat that allow you to lose weight. Sure you can treat yourself to a slice of pizza once in awhile, but if you're eating nothing more than unhealthy foods in large portions, then you're really not using your band at all. Per the protein, I've gotten in up to 120g in a day. I'd say you need to go back to eating more protein, as it keeps you full for longer. All I can say is is to go back to the bandster rules. Eat a cup of food, 3-4oz of dense protein, vegetables, and a grain if you're still hungry. Even though you may hate counting your calories, carbs, etc. sometime it is a necessary evil. It helps to see what you're eating and how much of it each day. If you decide to start, try fitday.com or myfitnesspal.com, both are great. Best of luck.
  12. Do not fear, you are doing fine. My weight loss fluctuated month to month even though I ate the same 600-800 calories each day. Mostly I lost about 2 lbs a week, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, and one month I only lost 4 lbs. Keep to your plan and keep active and the weight will come off. Every little bit helps and it all adds up to a big number in the end if you persevere.

    My First Fill

So to my surprise I found out that I had 3cc in my band from surgery. I had no idea, no wonder food was getting stuck. After we discussed me taking 20-25 minutes to eat he decided to take out a tiny bit. He didn't really tell me how much but did tell me to come back in 4 weeks instead of 6 to adjust again. I'm kind of disappointed because I was so ready to start getting fills and eventually finding my sweet spot. But before I thought I was working with a empty band so now I know I'm not and maybe my mind will assist me. He did tell me to quit letting myself get hungry and waiting until the next meal time, eat when I feel hunger. I was drinking a V8 at work to tide me over until meal time, he said no more liquid calories, eat food when I need it. Oh and the needle, it wasn't so bad he numbed me with something that prick was uncomfortable but I didn't feel the needle at all. The worst was him pressing down on my stomach around the port I was so sore when I left. I think I am a little swollen around the port and my scar is purple now.

    Food intake

Hummm no clue since we all have a different plan. What does your NUT say? I can only speak from personal experience but at 22 days I was probably around 400-500 calories and mainly from protein drinks considering I would have just been moved to regular foods at that point. I never focused on a time schedule of when to eat more just making sure I did sometime during the day.@@sheppardemily
  15. I've been taking Biotin for hair loss... I think it's making a big difference. In regard to not losing weight... and still working out like crazy. Could be your not eating enough and your body is going into starvation mode. I've had this problem too. Seems when I NOT eating... I don't lose. To me it's very weird, but true. Try to increase your calories to be at least 800 - 1200 per day and WRITE down everything you put in your mouth. I use my android and have an AP that is pretty cool. Let's me also log my workouts. Also, limiting your carbs will help. Keep us posted.

    My story made the news!

Your story made me cry because I am just like you. I have been working out religiously for the last 3-4 years.. 5-6 days per week, seeing a personal trainer 2-3 days per week and not shedding a pound. At first I gained weight too when eating 1400-1600 calories (which is what someone at my weight should be eating to lose) . Then my nut told me to go down to 1200, didn't gain but didn't lose either. I felt like I was just going to the gym so I wouldn't gain which was inspiration enough for me. 1000 calories made me lose but i felt like ****. I sprained my ankle this year and couldn't work out for 2 weeks and gained 10lbs! That was, for me, the straw that broke the camels back. Sorry for my long story because this is about you. You are such an inspiration...keep us updated.
  17. I hear you! It's seriously a tough one. My kids were eating leftover Mandarin Fried chicken wings for dinner last night and I nearly went nuts! I did succumb and had a little nibble that one of them had carelessly left on their plate. I consoled myself by remembering that there are plenty who have documented their experiences going off the wagon on this board. As for the thirst cravings, I'm finding as I go along I am able to drink larger gulps in one go and I try to make that my consolation for not being able to drink carbonated drinks. I'm also looking for substitutes, although they aren't carbonated. Right now I'm liking diet Cranberry juice. It's actually too strong for me, so I Water it down some (saves money that way too). Besides Crystal Light, which is okay, you can also find lower calorie apple juice in the stores, and that's not too bad. I'm always on the lookout for other alternatives to plain H2O. Don't like stuff too sweet, so it's a bit of a challenge. Hang in there - it'll be worth it, right?

    What is going on here!!!

I am frustrated also. I say try shaking it up a bit...try a different exercise and make sure you are getting enough calories. I am going to try Zumba to try to break out of the 190s. These stalls are frustrating!

    I am stumped!

Now I realize why you are asking this question, because it is the same question I asked myself 1-2 months out where I was starving. (It was also the same question I asked myself dozen's of times over the years before banding when I kept deciding to give it one more shot the old fashioned way) You are in bandster hell of course and becoming depressed is natural. We have all been there, or will get there in the future. A lot of us have read something about it before we got there, but you don't realllyyy understand it until you have lived it. It is a miserable time where you doubt yourself, doubt your band, doubt everything. It is true, your band is not really helping you at this phase. I stalled out on weight loss for several weeks at this point. The only way I could get it going again was to cut out processed carbs. I ate only lean meats and vegetables with limited fruit and was able to start moving downwards on the scale again. I did not lose much from a few weeks out from surgery through my first fill. My first fill brought me down a few pounds quickly. However, what little restriction I felt was gone within a week. I started stalling again and had to really start exercising regularly to keep a downward movement on the scale. I could keep losing, but I was losing super slooowwww. However, as long as I kept losing even a little, I wasn't so depressed. Then came fill #2. This was a real kick in the pants for me. I was pb'ing everyday for the first week and a half and had decided on an unfill. Then I realized that the problem was me eating too fast & not chewing enough. I also was not going on liquids for a day after a pb to let my stomach rest. I started eating more like a bandster and found this fill gave me great restriction, and I cancelled my appointment for a slight unfill. I have not had to get another fill since as of yet and I am still losing steadily around 1.5 pounds a week on average. When I was in bandster hell, every day was a supreme struggle. Now, it has become more easy because my tool is working with me. Once you are at the right fill level, you can find success as well as long as you follow bandster rules and eat healthy foods the majority of the time. You can also lose weight at this stage as well. Low carb worked well for me. I didn't restrict volume so much, only certain types of foods. Exercise also worked for me. What kinds of foods are you eating? Are you tracking them by calories and Protein? What are you doing for exercise?
  20. I have my nutrition folder and It says full liquids for 2 weeks post op. It suggest things like Protein drinks for Breakfast and creamed Soups for lunch and dinner. However it took me 8 hours yesterday to finish about 6 oz of Protein Drink. I am sipping Gatorade and Vitamin Water too. What should my goals be??? 2 oz of protein drink? and then some Soup later? I am just not sure I am doing this right. Yesterday all day I got was 200 calories in and maybe 20 grams of protein. I am almost scared to try anything like pudding with protein, it just seems to thick in mind right now.

    Plateauing

Hello I had surgery on December 26, 2012 About seven weeks now.... On week number 3 ,I plateaued didn't lose anything for a week And also on week six..... It is a scary feeling.... I have lost 35 pounds but feel like I should've lost about 40-45 If I had not plateaued out...... I do know I've lost a lot of inches I went from a size 24 to pick extra-large in a skirt.... My doctor said I was not taking in enough calories (I was currently taking in 300 to 350 in )..... Wants me to get it up to 700 cal.... This was two weeks ago.... And still not at 700 cal but I am now at least a 550-600 Day.... This week I lost 3 1/2 pounds pounds.... So maybe he knows what he's talking about LOL
  22. so i'm officially 3 weeks post-op! i feel so much better, i've already lost 24lbs! yay! it's so exciting! what i'd like to know is how many of you are super strict with the low carbs? i have drasticly reduced my carbs, but i still go over the 30g recomended. right now i'm still eating mushy/soft foods....but in the future i'd like to be able to have apples, vegetables, maybe a cracker or two with my tofu egg salad. will i sabotage my weight loss if i keep a low calorie count with a slightly elevated carb (maybe 40-60g/day) intake?
  23. My nut says things like don't focus on Protein so much and you'll get it in. Or I'll ask what stage is next and she'll say...we'll see! Needless to say i'm in the process of getting another one. But in the meantime I would love your help. Question 1: How many carbs should we intake to continue weight loss at 4 weeks? Question 2: How much calories and Water intake is ideal for weight loss at 4 weeks? Question 3: Do we need certain amount of fat grams too? What are some of your daily diets consisting of (7am-bedtime timeline) so i can get an idea of proper foods and time management.. I know for someone who researched for 6months before having this surgery i sound clueless but the diet after was never made clear... Thanks for your help.
  24. Don't worry too soon about the Protein and total calorie intake; your appetite and ability to nibble/sip will return soon enough. Re: 'tightness of Band' my own 4cc band was so tight I didn't need a fill until 6 MONTHS post op.....and those months were the period I lost the most weight along with learning the most about my old eating habits. The early phase of liquids introduced to me a whole new world of actually appreciating as well as learning to *like* Soup as a choice. One of the early weight losses not often recognized, is not just 'Water weight' but also the contents of the colon. Depending on the individual, 5-15# of old fecal material can be eliminated. As we repopulate our lower digestive track with mushies and gradually more normal solids we can re-gain a few pounds without realizing the transient nature of that part of our scale reading. food textures is important to many. No Bandster has ever died from thinking they were too hungry though. After 15 years on insulin shots twice a day, learning how to moderate then finally leave off my insulin WITH THE HELP and blessing of my internist, recognizing what was and what wasn't 'hunger' became ever more easy to discern. As my elevated blood sugar/insulin levels normalized, my panic attacks and anxiety disorder dwindled too. 10 years on CPAP and sleep apnea.....a blessing to no longer suffer that within 10 months postBand. Be sure to photograph/tape measure for your journal. Save some article of clothing to use for show-and-tell later as you will not believe how much your body changes.
