amylynns replied to MamaTo3inNH's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Aww, thanks. I had 2 weeks of clear liquids BEFORE surgery as well. It was Harder before surgery. After surgery I had no appetite. In fact I am 3 months out and I still am NEVER hungry. In fact I have to force myself to eat. So weird compared to before. Guess I Still have a struggle with food, just a different kind of struggle now. :-) -
Did anyone feel pressure by surgeon to so bypass instead of sleeve
Madmax68 replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I opted for the sleeve and at the time I was told I would not likely lose as much weight and was asked to reconsider. I then received a phone call a week before surgery from the doc again urging me to consider the RNY because she saw a small hiatus hernia. She was worried I might have GERD post surgery. I stuck to my guns, they fixed the hernia at the time of sleeve surgery and everything has worked out great. -
Did anyone feel pressure by surgeon to so bypass instead of sleeve
rgmoe_718 replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was more interested in the bypass at first, got approved for it and everything but as I got closer to my date my surgeon ran a blood test to check my iron levels because I have chronic anemia. 1 week before my procedure I was told by my surgeon that I should consider the sleeve instead. Me being stubborn I was so stuck on getting the bypass because I thought it would be way more effective in weight loss than the sleeve until he revealed to me that I was at a much higher risk of complications because I'm extremely anemic. I agreed to the sleeve and they resubmitted my letter to my insurance company. Everything went smooth after. -
Did anyone feel pressure by surgeon to so bypass instead of sleeve
NikkiDoc replied to Mayastone's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
My surgeon did not try to sell me on the RNY. I told him I was interested in the sleeve or band and we never even talked about the bypass. I actually saw his original presentation on WLS about 5 years ago but I didn't qualify. He was just starting to perform the sleeve then. He discussed RNY, band and sleeve. I would say he discouraged the band. My stats are not too different than yours. I was 257 and 5'3" as my starting weight. I had a 6 months insurance mandated diet and was at 242 at the start of my 10 day liquid pre op diet. I am 6.5 months out and am at 174. I am still losing, more slowly that when I first sleeved, but still losing. There are plenty of people on this board who have had sleeves and are well below the 180-190 that she quoted to you. If you are not comfortable with what this surgeon is telling you go talk to another one or two. Just because every one else loves her does not mean she is the right one for you. You need to be comfortable with your surgeon and the surgery. If you do decide on the sleeve I would recommend a different surgeon. You want a surgeon that believes in the sleeve and has a program designed for the sleeve not one modified from RNY. You don't want to have a minor stall or complication and feel like she is thinking "Well this wouldn't have happened it you followed my advise and had RNY". You want a surgeon that has done a large number of sleeves not one that does them occasionally, under duress. -
Pre-Op. Not Sure If I Am Following The Week Before Diet Correctly?
elcee replied to armymom2012's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes. One of the former members, restless monkey had that happen to her. She lost weight prior to the op but did it her way not by following the diet she was told to. She went for the op , the Dr "opened" her up and found her liver was too big/fatty so he closed her back up without putting the band on. She then followed the diet she was prescribed and got the operation a couple of weeks later. It is not up to us to try to second guess our surgeons. We are trusting them with our lives so we should be able to trust them enough to follow their instructions. If we don't understand or disagree with what they have told us we should discuss it with them. If we are still not happy then we should change to a Dr that we do trust and who's instructions we are happy to follow. -

When to start cardio in the gym
fruitandveggies replied to dennisdj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was ordered to walk on the treadmill (or outside) for 20-30 minutes every day, starting on surgery day. I was allowed to start regular gym activity at 4 weeks out, but waited an extra week because I was feeling very weak. Was fine after 5 weeks out. -
Hang in there. I'm four months post op and doing much better. My first month was very rough mentally and physically. My surgeon and OBGYN have both told me that your body gets off track hormonally from this surgery from the shock and rapid weight reduction. There is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lot to process and learn to eat properly on top of all the physical changes. Each week will get better and better. I did have the doc prescribe Ativan for me and that really helped calm me down and relax. It got me to sleep a good nights rest and heal.

I couldn't be happier! It hit me today that it is EXACTLY 6 months since surgery and low and behold, I got past that 59 lb mark that I was stuck on for a week! Woo hoo!

I had surgery on 5/6 and yet to hit my protein goals. I have a very hard time drinking the shakes and the Isopure is disgusting. Is anyone else having this problem? What can I expect if I do not begin to hit my daily goals in the next few weeks?

When to start cardio in the gym
BigViffer replied to dennisdj's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
If you mean walking on a treadmill or easy going on an eliptical, you could physically handle it. However, you will need clearance from your surgeon. A week out you probably still have the drain at least and maybe the pain ball. Even if you don't have any of those, the gym is a hotbed of bacteria. You don't want to be around that crap while your incisions are still healing. -
I have a question about water
MCE33 replied to xiomara8868's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
At 5 weeks I am pretty sure I could have done 20 ounces in 30 minutes. I certainly can now at 9 weeks. I think your body will let you know if you are drinking too much or too fast. I (fortunately) have only gotten sick a few times - and twice it was from drinking too fast because I let myself get way too thirsty. If you sip sip sip and are comfortable - no big deal. Now if you were only a few days out I would say that the nerves of the pouch just have not developed yet too tell you STOP - but at 5 weeks you would know. -
My personal choice is to never get a fill until' waiting at least 2 weeks. And, if you have some restriction before a fill, wait 3 weeks or 4. Depending on personal cycles, and because fills tend to vary though out time, I think one month is great. But, remember everyone is different.

Hi Sandra, My sister had gastric bypass last year in November. Her daughter had the lap band in Feb. Same surgeon did both procedures. My sister almost died from complications - in a coma for a few days and weeks of recovery. My niece had the procedure on Friday and went back to work on Monday. My sister has lost 85 lbs in one year My niece has lost 135 lbs in 10 months. For me the lap band is a no-brainer. Why go through major surgery, have an irreversible procedure and face the greatly increased risk when there's a better alternative? The surgeon feels the same way and does not do gastric bypass anymore. I want to emphasize that the surgeon (American) was excellent as was the hospital. My sister's complications were just one of the inherent risks. If the surgeon hadn't been so good my sister would not have survived. My insurance will not pay for this surgeon to do my lap band (says it's experimental) so I'm off to Mexico to have it done.

I'm getting the sleeve in a few weeks, but am worried about puking. My wife had the lap band and she would puke all the time. It seems it's the same concept, since your upper stomach is now the small area food has to travel through, but better in the long run. I just don't want to be puking all the time. Any advice from people on this and anything else you want to give me for info/advice? I know I need this, but am scared a bit as well. I'm 6'7", so I hide my weight because of my tall frame, but i am hoping to lose 100 lbs of my 320lbs.

I can understand...I have almost 200 lbs to lose to get to the high end of my ideal weight, and sometimes it seems insurmountable. I have, however, lost just shy of 24 lbs in 2.5 weeks and I can ALREADY tell the difference. I have more energy and my wedding band is easily removed (instead of having to whip out the Windex). My first goal is to fit into the pants I wore (which were still 26's) before having my twins. Well, not just fit, but feel comfortable in them. I am a very loose skinned size 28 b/c of the ice cream eaten during my twin pregnancy....and I think it will take a while before those clothes fit me in the waist... I can't wait to drop that first bag off at Goodwill!!! Good luck and best wishes. Rain

Hiya, Three months ago, with 205 pounds to lose, I thought it was impossible too. Now, 55 pounds down (just two months after surgery), I feel hopeful and excited and energetic and so so so much better. Please don't give up! Nothing is impossible. Wen

Hello Wasa, I am really touched at your concern. I think I will be ok tho. I think now that it must have been the way I had my leg under me when I was sitting on the couch. Once up...I was fine and could walk alright and all. I will make an appt to see my regular doctor tho. I haven't had a check up in about three years so it is about time for one. Thanks again for your concern...I really appreciate it. Take Care....bev

You cannot gage stomach size with puree
Armygalbonnie replied to trenth's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I'm almost 3 months out and I can eat 2 poached eggs without any problem. I've been doing it for the past 6 weeks. I can't eat anything with it but I tolerate it really well. It stays with me for quite some time though. It's odd how I can eat 3 oz of protein for lunch with veggie, drink my shake for breakfast and eat 2 healthy snacks during the day but come dinner time, I can barely eat 2 oz of protein. It's like I'm full from eating the rest of the day. I'm still trying to adjust my eyes to my stomach size. I put food on my plate and think THAT'S ALL???, yet I can't eat it all. I love it! -
Question About Nails

Liquid diet 3 weeks? I'm only doing 2 days liquid diet. I'm on a low calorie diet. -
My largest incision has been the one the bugged from day one. The doc says there is a deep stitch in that one. I had been fine for about a week now, and then tonight I went to get up and it was sore again. I think it is the due to increased activity.

Hello, I guess this is the first step that makes it a realization that I am ready for a significant change. I have been fighting my weight for about 10 years now. It was found that I had hypothyroidism about 4 years ago. (5 years after gaining all the weight.) I have been on meds. and my THS is controlled. Well, the weight still is out of control. I am right at 40 BMI and am afraid that it will not be dramatic enough for imy insurance company to cover the lap band. I have a significant family history of diabetes and cancer, and am nervous that these things might await me if my weight continues to be a factor. A year ago I was 30 pounds lighter due to excessive dieting and workouts. Also, I used Merida for extra help. Well, I stopped Merida and the weight came right back on. I have my initial appointment in a week. I guess I will see what the nurse's thoughts are regarding my qualifications. Are there others out there who were approved based on a 40 BMI?
