  1. Thank you guys! I appreciate the feedback. I guess I just really need to focus on healing and maybe add some more calories.

    Question, not enough calories?

At a month post op you're only supposed to be walking, and as long as your Protein is up you're fine and you'll lose, lose, lose which is kinda the purpose. Protein up, calories down is the way this works, let us know how you progress, and at 4 weeks no move to solids yet? That will give you more caloric intake as well, unless you're restricted from solids I would make that move.

    Maintaining and snacks

How about a small piece of fruit? I have been eating nuts as my snack and I agree about the calories being too high......So I too am looking for some snack foods. I'm on a little more difficult of a journey starting today. I'm cutting out all the wheat and processed foods......I do love hearing about your experiences and look forward to hearing more from you..... Can I ask what you eat throughout the day and if you are on myfitnesspal.com? thanks

The Sauce that Makes it All Slide Down-- Part Two

Okay, the previously posted recipe was only part of the blog, but once I'd added it, the darn thing wouldn't let me type my comments below. I'm big on sauces because I need them to swallow many meats. Even the softest and smallest can cause me a bit of distress, so a sauce smooths the way and keeps me from insulting the host or embarrassing myself. (Nothing like throwing up your own cooking to impress the guests, right?) The White Sauce and its variations are a large part of my secret recipes, but there are tricks. 1. Use Wondra Flour when you can get it. This flour is ground extra fine and is made for use in sauces and gravies. Yes, you can use regular AP flour, but you're risking lumps. Do yourself a favor and sift the AP flour first. 2. Use a whisk to stir the flour and butter together, then slowwwwly whisk in the milk and other ingredients. 3. Don't turn your back on this recipe, not for a second. Line up your ingredients and measure them out before you start melting that butter so you can grab and dump with one hand while whisking with the other. 4. Note that I added the calories and carbs to the side and underlined what dish goes with what sauce. 5. Frankly, the cheese sauce goes in any dish where you might use cheese, and the cheese can be varied out for different flavors. Shredded Cheddar is the most common, but shredded swiss is marvelous over Spam and frozen mixed veggies for a fast meal on the cheap. 6. Use Creole Seasoning (like Tony Chachere's) in place of the chili powder in the Mexicali Sauce for a nice Cajun flavor. Add bell peppers, onions, and celery to the beef, pork, chicken, and/or shrimp, and you have a meal for no trouble! Play with your sauce once you're comfy. You'll love how you can make anything tasty! My fussy "I hate broccoli" DH swears I could put these sauces over a brick and he'd eat it.
  5. I'm a little concerned as I seem to only be able to eat very small amounts and I'm having around 350 calories on week 5. My NUT gave me a general sheet of guidelines to follow with no mention of weighing anything or counting calories. She just mentions 3 small meals and what I can eat and a couple of snacks in between IF i want. She has written for me to have an omelette with 2 eggs and low fat cheese and I made an omelette with one egg and cheese and had a quarter. For dinner I have a couple of spoons, if that and I'm done. I wouldn't say I'm STUFFED but I'm full and can feel the food sitting in my throat and I don't want to push it. I'm worried my weight loss will slow down if I don't eat enough and on top of that I feel a bit depressed. How much should I be eating at this stage?
  6. Ok, so I have weighed the same for 10 days. I'm 4 weeks out, and of course I'm starting to worry. I log my food, I get my Protein, I am getting 500-700 calories a day, and I'm just frustrated. Tomorrow is my one month surgiversary, so I'll do measurements and maybe that will make me feel better, but right now I'm seriously down about this. I tried putting away the scale, but that gave me anxiety, so now I'm back to weighing once a day in the morning, and the same number just keeps showing up. I HATE 289!:cursing: And of course it's hard not to compare myself to my husband (who got sleeved the same day as me). He had a small stall as well, but now is back to losing 2 lbs./day the past few days. He'll soon weigh less than me at this rate! Do I just keep doing what I'm doing, or is there something I should try to break this? I'm willing to try something new, but I'm not sure what:confused:
  7. Kashi GoLean Orginial is good too. One cup is a serving with Protien at 13 grams, Fiber at 10 grams, sugar only 9 grams and 160 calories. I asked for a Yogurt maker for Christmas so my daughters and I are going to try our hand at making our own. My youngest is Lactose Intolerant so we are going to try making plain yogurt Lactose free so we can add stuff to it. We found some sugar-free syrups at wal-mart quite cheap.

    I gained a pound

Prior to this week I wasn't really tracking my carbs...since Friday, I have made an effort to keep them below 40g. I cant exercise until 6 wks, so that is next week. I am so afraid to up my calories omg but I may try. Do you guys agree that I should incorporate Snacks in between to increase the calories, because i am pretty full with my meals now. I know this is a lot of experimentation and trial and error I just dont want to fail

    I gained a pound

Call the nutritionist, but how can you get that much in if you are only eating 3 times a day? And as far as the pound goes, I would try increasing your calories to 1000 - 1200 per day. I wasn't losing at all at 800.

    I gained a pound

This past monday, i was 5 weeks out....to me I have been losing slowly...i was 19 lbs down since surgery, 63 total including pre-op. Yesterday I weighed myself, and the scale went up .6 then today another .4 for a full pound I just finished my period so I was expecting it to go down more also this morning I had a BM, so when the scale went up i was mortified I have been keeping my caloried under 800 my Water has been at least at 72ozs my Proteins over 70 i am really getting frustrated. my doc said 3 meals a day, but my friend who was sleeved in August says i should be eating 5-6 times a day...as I read most of you say on here...do you think I should call my nutritionist, or just wait it out a few days??? Bear in mind I started solids this past weekend, do you think that is it??? ughhhh

    Need a Pep Talk

My story is a long one, but if you want to read it on my blog liquid put into my band as of late. My doctor is super booked and its seems I can never get in and I am working constantly (paralegal). So without hardly any restriction, I packed on 25lbs. Now, through vigorous exercise and extreme dieting (minimal calories, veggies, chicken, eggs, repeat) I have lost 10 lbs of that. I have not been feeling myself lately. I hate the way I look and am terrified of gaining weight back. I seem to have gained it all right in my abdominal region, which makes it so many things do not fit correctly at all. My confidence is low, and I am so sick of dieting I could harpoon something. I know the end result will be worth it, and I need to go back in and get a fill, but I am struggling so hard right now. I would do anything to get down past 160 (my lowest) and hit 150 (my original pre-op goal) and I want to be 140 (over the moon, never going to happen goal). I feel hungry all the time. I eat good, healthy veggies, I cut out cheese, I make very good choices because the band taught me that, however, my willpower right now is struggling and I want to see lower numbers on that scale. Any tips or tricks you guys have to maximize your weight loss would be phenomenal right now. I need a pep talk

How Many Fills Do I Need?

I didn't feel anything with the first three fills, but kept trying to stay on track with my eating. Protein, protein, protein! After the 4th fill, everything has been great. I feel restriction just when I need it, and am not having to count every calorie that I eat. Hang in there! Something I didn't realize initially is that they will advance the fill amounts as you lose, so the more I lose at each appointment the more restriction they "can" add. I have another fill scheduled next week, and probably won't have them adjust anything as I think I may be in the green zone? Good luck. Hang in there.

    What am I doing Wrong?

I am getting my protein, keeping my carbs down. I am losing inches. I am using the program myfitnesspal which tracks everything. It just seems that the weight should be going down. A pound of fat is the same as a pound of muscles with the exception that a pound of muscle takes less space hence the loser clothes and muscle burns more calories than fat otherwise a pound is a pound. I was on a low carb diet in 2010 and I was taking in between 960 - 1050 calories a day and I lost weight just about every week. I am eating about the same except smaller quantities, as I was then and I'm just not losing. Is this normal?

I'm at a weight stand still.

Eat breakfast - even if it's a protein shake. Make sure you're getting protein in your soup or salad at lunch and add some fruit, too. Also keep in mind that for every 10 pounds you lose, you need 150 fewer calories to maintain that weight.
  16. I am 4.5 weeks post op. I lost 9# the 1st 2 weeks and only 1.25 since- nothing for the last 2 weeks! Here's history: 5-600 calories liquids x2 wks. 800 cals. per week 1st week purees 1100 calories per day most days for 2nd week purees. to dr. NUT told me no more then 800 cals. per day. EVER til I've lost all my wt. and this is a standard. I am working out 5-6 days per week 1 hr. per day. . I have built back up to this (1 hr. per day 6-7 days per week pre op) and this week 1 hr. per day all week. Monitoring my food religiously and being totally honest on it... using livestrong site. getting in my water. 3 small meals and 1 small snack per day. no late nite eating (but dinner prob.later than it should be but that's my wk. schedule). She told me to cut out virtually all carbs. I don't want to be back on the protein diet..been there- done that. I asked how many carbs per day.. what % of my calories? how many... would not say...just to cut them out as much as possible. Any ideas why my wt. loss has died? I am getting in 850-900 per day now..can't stay at 800.. UBER hungry all the time Anybody else experience this? I am SO frustrated and I KNOW I'm not cheating and doing it right. I"m keeping my eye on the end game...staying the course.. but it's SO hard and it's making me feel like a failure.!

Yep that will do it! You have upped ur calories and put ur body into shock mode. Keep mixing it up and that helps prevent stalls.

Am I Loosing Weight Too Fast?

That is fantastic and fast, but as Lissa points out, don't expect it to go that fast every week or for months at a time! The initial loss is usually quick dramatic due to many reasons. You're losing Water, so that is quick. You're eating VERY little post-op as you begin healing and learning what you can and cannot tolerate. You stomach is quite swollen, so you capacity is tiny. It will get bigger and you will eat more. On the flip-side. Those of us who have more to lose (starting with BMI >45 or >50) tend to lose faster. It's probably tied to the fact that our new calorie intake is so dramatically less than what we were eating prior to surgery, just to maintain our larger size! Now we're eating tiny amounts and still having to use up energy to move our big bodies around. This creates a significant calorie deficit, and the only place the body can turn to for that energy gap is our fat! Which is fantastic! That's what we want! Use up that fat darn it! Beware though, as we get smaller, our calorie requirements decrease, and our food intake will remain roughly the same. That means a smaller calorie deficit and slower loss. That's usually why VSG patients have to "crank up" the exercise as they get closer to goal. To introduce more of a calorie deficit (we can't cut back on our intake, after all, it's already very low!). Enjoy your "shotgun" start! And keep up the great work!
  19. I like Dannon Light & Fit Greek 5.3 oz cup. 80 calories, 0 fat, 9g carbs, 8g sugar, 12g Protein. My favorite flavors are cherry, blueberry, peach, and strawberry. I can eat a whole one most times. Sometimes I throw out about 1/4 of it. If you follow your doctor's guidelines than you can eat 1/2 or even a little more and be around 5g of sugar.

    Swelling Is Gone:(

Hi Mel, I am right there with you. My appointment is Wednesday and I will be just over four weeks from surgery. Have not felt a return of hunger until very recently -- have noticed in last week to ten days that I am hungry again sooner, although I'm still satisfied on a small portion. My weight loss has stalled. Could be a small plateau or I am taking in too many calories. I look forward to discussing all this with the doctor. A bit nervous about a fill as I've been doing so well and don't want to rock the boat. Good luck to you Tuesday -- let's compare notes!
  21. I am almost 2 years post-op. I've been doing well with my weight, but the last two months I've put 6 pounds on. I am still below my medical goal weight, but I feel best at 170-175. I'm at one 180 now. I have recently had UNCONTROLLABLE hunger. I'm still mostly eating on plan and have begin counting calories again because I DO NOT want to gain even one more pound. I'm also returning to the gym after over a year of not having to go. I'm eating proper portions, but I've had to increase the number of times I eat in a day to try to stay satiated and not overeat. Has anyone had a radically increased sense of hunger post-op? How have you dealt with it?

    Week Six Weigh In/NSV's

SIX WEEKS ALREADY! HW: 273 SW: 250 LW- 233.6 CW: 232.6 About 40lbs down from my highest weight, about 18lbs down since day of surgery. Hoping I get somewhere near 230 by my 8 week update.... Not gonna talk about how annoyed I am by how slow this is going. Non Scale Victories- As you all know I hit my goal of 20 miles of walking in January. I am going to leave the goal the same for February and add a few days of Turbo Fire, the Fire 30 work out. It’s pretty fun and burns a lot of calories. I have also been getting LOTS of comments on my apparent weight loss, so that feels good. I was thinking about going to pick up a couple of pairs of pants this weekend but……….I think I have talked myself out of it. I don’t know, I just feel like if I went, I would be disappointed and I just can’t really take that right now. My mom suggested I go TO the store and try them on and I said, why so I can have a proper breakdown in public in the changing room? NAWL. So we’ll see. I might and I might not, depending on how small I feel when I get up and get going tomorrow.

    What Have I Done?

My pre-op diet is Bariatric Advantage protein powder shakes for 2 weeks. I can mix the powder with water, milk, or soy milk, and add fruit or greek yogurt if I wish. I can have 4-5 shakes per day, which works out to be about 1000-1200 calories per day. I can also have sugar-free clear liquids as I wish. From what I have read on the forums, the diet varies surgeon to surgeon. Some people do the shakes for 1 week, others, get to eat food but have to follow an Atkins diet.

    Malaysia Air - Meals

Has anyone flown Malaysia Air and have any thoughts / feedback on their in-flight meals? On other airlines recently, I sometimes order a special Gluten Free meal and it kind of worked well. It means I get my meal earlier and it has less sauce / rice etc + more protein. I need this extra time to be able to eat for longer, however it can result in food jealousy when the normal meals look nicer I have never flown Malaysia Air before, so I haven't tried their normal meals, or special meals. I don't need a Gluten Free meal specifically as I'm not GF, but getting a special meal worked out well, e.g. getting it early, having less rice and more protein etc, that would be good to hear. These are the options: https://www.malaysiaairlines.com/nz/en/experience/inflight-meal/special-meal-request.html (e.g. Bland Meal (BLML) Diabetic Meal (DBML) Gluten Intolerant Meal (GFML) Low Calorie Meal (LCML) Low Fat Meal (LFML) Low Lactose Meal (NLML) Low Salt Meal (LSML) + more information and options on line above.) After any thoughts or suggestions on whether to order their normal meal or a special meal.... e.g. Gluten Free. Thanks!

    Calorie intake ???

This is how you live your life. My doctor is aiming for portion control and smart choices, not calorie counting. Frankly, I've "been there, done that". I go NUTS if I have to count every freaking bite I eat! LOL That's the beauty of the band, however; it is your tool You use it to suit your style. My doctor bans all snacking, and that is working for me.
