    Pre-Surgury stuff

Hey, its 12:54 april 24th 2006....i should be studying exams but i'm here doing my journal! I will start with what i did before getting into this, since i don't have much to say about the pre-op diet (i started 1 hour ago...its a 10 day diet consisting of yogurt and cottage cheese) So....around march i started thinking out of the blue...I need help, i've tried everything, I don't even know what clicked but all of a sudden i felt the urge to look up everything on the RNY gastric bypass. While i was researching that i found info on the Lap-band...which led me here. I was looking for forums where real people were discussing real issues. I started out just talking about it with my parents, they were ok about it but quickly warmed up to the idea. My mom did research and found someone in Toronto. This was the TCC (toronto cosmetic clinic) So i booked a consult in person for late may. I was searching the forum and found out no one really knew them and their reputation was not established, and their post-op care didn't add up. I opted for the TLBC (Toronto laparascopic band centre). Where i could do a phone consult which i booked for april 5th... Filled out the forms, did the consult, set the date....May 4th 2007. I spent countless hours on LBT researching, viewing threads, looking at before and after pics, reading horror stories about the complications. Now comes the real test...10 days, pre-op diet! I will keep you (if anyone is actually reading) posted!

    Strategies to reach fluid goal?

Thank you both. I will give the slushy idea a try. I do tolerate popsicles pretty well, they just take forever to consume (and let's face it, no sugar free popsicle is as good as an Otter Pop :-( ) I bought some sugar free jelly belly syrups and some silicone ice pop molds that I have working in the freezer right now, can certainly use those. I haven't noticed that warm drinks are any better than room temp, and it seems to be variable as to whether cold vs room temp liquids are better tolerated. Sometimes it's one, sometimes it's the other. Bizarre... Thanks for the support. While this is definitely a complication to be addressed, I certainly don't want to give anyone the impression that it's a horrible experience or an insurmountable problem. I'm able to eat solids and drink fluids (just not as much as I need). I read the posts about complications with leaks, etc. and the misery they cause, and this just isn't even in the same ballpark...

Sleeve on 7/29 (or close), how are we doing?

I was sleeved on 7/31 and I am feeling fantastic! I was feeling great the day after surgery and have had zero complications so far. I walk a lot, am getting 60-70g of Protein a day. I'm just working on upping my calories since I'm on the low end still and trying to drink as much Water as possible. I'm on Protein shakes and broths mixed with unflavored protein. Not sick of them yet, I'm stocked up and ready for my puree stage. Looking forward to a little more sustenance.

    First appt Tomm, super nervous!

Hello @Readybutscared I am similar in size to you 5'7 1/2" and currently 240 pre-surgery. My DS Loop surgery is schedule for 9/19. I guess we''ll see how it turns out. Of course I am nervous. I'm 68 years old. I feel like I should have looked into the WL surgery years ago. I've struggled with weigh for over 50 years. Like you I hide my weight well and don't appear to be obese. As I have gotten older I have developed weight related complications requiring medications; GERD, high blood pressure and recently type II diabetes. As I said we'll see how this works out. I'm tired of being a fat guy and want to see what it's like to have a normal weight my remaining 25-30 years. I enjoy bicycling. I told my surgeon try riding carrying an 80 lb. bag of cement.
  6. Good afternoon all! First I want to commend the bravery of all you for going through with surgery, openly discussing your journey and being supportive of others. I have been around, lurking mostly, for a few months. I was denied in January and thought for sure, that was the end of that. Low and behold, I was wrong and am scheduled for surgery on Wednesday the 9th of September. Yay! While I feel ultimately thankful for a new chapter in life, I can't help but feel nervous, anxious and am having inner dialogue that suggest I should back-out. Is that normal? Is it a sign that I should wait? I just don't know. I love my Surgeon. He is awesome, super awesome and I know I am in good hands. I don't fear the pain, the potential discomfort or any complications; I fear a piece of me will die. food has always been a central theme in my life. I am the "chef" of the family, everyone turns to me for food advice, recipes or the occasional "I NEED YOUR HELP, I don't know how to make Cookies from scratch!" I also have some of my fondest memories with friends, family, neighbors and colleagues around a table heaping with fabulous food. It is a part of my identity and I'm scared that once I let that go, I'll have nothing. I know that is an unreasonable sentiment as I much more than a fried chicken recipe, a raved about potluck casserole or a delicious holiday treat but I have never been known for anything else. My weight and my food are all most people will ever comment on and I guess that is why having surgery is important. I should be defined by more or have no definition at all. Any suggestions? Thoughts or general advice?
  7. Oh my goodness. Im so sorry that happened to you. Im sure everyone thinks of the risks but rupturing your esophogus certainly wasnt one that I thought of. Hope you heal quickly and get past all this and onto your new life very soon with no further complications.

    Hanging skin

I think EVERYONE has sagging skin after weight loss, it’s just the degree to which you get it. But clothes cover everything that’s super-evident (thighs/upper arms/abdomen) and if it really bothers you there’s always plastics or other procedures. For now I’m making do with light shapewear and elbow-length sleeves. Two years ago at this time, dressing for summer was 100x more complicated because I didn’t show those areas anyhow AND I was trying to manage the form-fitting/layering/air con-to-blistering weather. Now all I have to worry about is do I look good in one of my many medium-sized elbow-length shirts. So much easier. Definitely overrides any loose skin worries. What will happen will happen. Even if you end up with the least elastic skin ever, you’ll have more options than you do now.
  10. I feel better about my choice to go now. I will have my sleeve done in one week. I had a friend who went a couple of years ago and she looks amazing now....and no complications. She went with Dr. Almanza at Jersuelum Hospital. I chose Dr. Garcia. I to am uninsured and i paid out of pocket. If i didnt have a friend who went threw it already and lived to tell me i proably wouldnt do it!.....I wish you sucess on your travel and surgery,,,
  11. I am feeling the same way. I have heard of people having leaks and other complications and it does make me wonder if I am doing the right thing. But, I think positive all the time and vision myself out of the hospital safely at home and adjusting to my new nutritional lifestyle changes. Concentrating on journaling what I eat and when I exercise. I know if I don't do something now I will continue to pack on the pounds till I can not longer control myself or worse become home-bound. I have to say my hubby is really not to supportive in my decision for this surgery as he is afraid of the worse. Life is about taking chances and you take a chance every time you get behind the wheel of a car. As nervous as I am myself, I will be doing my surgery on the 25th of September. Good Luck to everyone

    Gastric bypass take 2, update!!

Glad you're home and getting better! I had a complication from the blood thinner too so I know ALL about the "passing." Yeah... it was no fun. My blood pressure dropped to 70/34 and that was lying down. My hemoglobin dropped 5 pts, and I ended up with 5 units of blood and emergency surgery. Fun times, but as soon as that was done, I recovered just like I was supposed to and haven't had a problem since. I hope your continued journey is as smooth as mine has been! Good luck!

    Hello

Hi. I was banded Oct 29, 2010. Dr. George Woodman is my surgeon. He has a remarkable team. I have had no complications from surgery at all. I have had very few side effects. I returned to work when I was 3 days post-op...much to Dr.'s dismay. I am looking forward to a new lifestyle. One that doesn't revolve around food and being what I like to call a foodie. My journey began w/a starting weight of 293.5 lbs. That was June 29, 2010. That day changed my life. I am now at 235 and have hit a plateau. I have had one fill and wanted to do it without a fill. I fell back into old patterns. Started nibbling here and there mindlessly. Going back to dr tomorrow. Will probably fill. Anyhow, I'm way off track. I just wanted to say how happy I am to have found this sight. It is reassuring to see people w/similar issues and be able to talk about them. My family tries to understand, but they don't. Sometimes it takes being there to fully understand. Look forward to seeing what all is on here. Have a great day!!

    hello,

Annabelle I too had a wait for my surgery. I started in Feb of 2012 and was sleeved Dec 5th 2012. I am really happy that I followed my NUT suggestion and stopped caffeine, carbonated soda, and empty calories back in early Feb. I read post of those who only stopped those foods when they reached the preop diet and they are miserable fighting craving while trying to adjust the sleeve. I am only unhappy that I got so caught up in "let's hurry up and make this happen" I failed to look at the risk objectively. The surgeon's office is selling a product so they gloss over everything unpleasant. Those here on the form do not, so read about complications and find out the truth of what could go wrong. I got a pierced bowel because my surgeon made a mistake cutting scar tissue. It made for a week hospital stay but worst my family feared they were loosing me during the hours/days it took to get things under control. Read about leaks. Yes they are all rare but I a proof as are many others on here rare happened to real people. With that being said I am a type 2 diabetic, and have hypertension. All meds were gone days after surgery.

    hello!

Hi my name is honor I'm from utica ny and Ive been over weight all my life! I got the lap band 3years ago and lost about 80lbs and felt pretty good but was unable to eat food got stuck all the time and due to food getting stuck and getting sick my esophagus swelled up so the dr had to unfill the band and I gained all my weight back and feel so uncomfortable. Well I decided to have a revision and get the bypass I am currently waiting for insurance approval. .they are deciding if they will just approve it due to complications with the band or if I have to do a 3month supervised diet. I am so nervous since I hear some bad stories about the bypass and I feel that my family is not happy about my decision but I need to do this for myself!!

    Newbie

Ruth I am so happy with my band, words trully can't express. I did not have complications, blood presure, sleep apinia, etc the list is endless, due to Obesity. I thought I had a thyriod problem, They said I was pre diabetis I like many others, choise the band, paid out of pockect, still paying for it and now happily 65 lbs down. Today, I still can NOT eat like I use to. Wishing you the best. Ruth's my middle name.

In my opinion. There is no, I repeat NO complication from the band that is any way form or fashion nearly as bad as those from a bypass can be. I just had a new band placed on Friday, due to slippage and had a hiatal hernia repaired in the process. My intestines are still intact, my body's capability to absorb nutrients is still in working order. I still have my whole stomach and no staple line to break. If I got erosion, I could take the band out and still have all my parts. I could also still decide to do the bypass if I absolutely had to. If I did the bypass first, I would have none of these things and no way to reverse it once it's done. Also, there is supposedly a window of opportunity with the bypass where you can lose weight. Then, the body learns to adapt to the changes and will allow weight to be gained back. With the band, I can have it adjusted and continue to lose or maintain my current weight, without the window limitation. I wish you much luck with your decision! Leatha banded 5/29/03 - Dr. Wetter/San Francisco Slippage repair - 07/16/04 - Dr. Veninga/ Texas 250/190/140??

    Doctor Hornbostel says no!!

My insurance won't pay so I am seriously considering going to Tiajuana Mexico but I am scared. Can anyone reccommend a doc in Tiajuana? I can drive there in 4 hours. I would rather hear from someone who had a complication and was happy with the doctor. Any doctor is good as long as nothing goes wrong.

    Let's count Dr. Aceves Patients!

I had my sleeve by Dr. Aceves on 8/12. Would not hesitate to recommend him. See some of my other posts for my story, post op complications (no fault of anyone---just one of those things) And I got awesome care for that too! I'm a retired health care professional and know the difference between great care, so-so care and horrible care. And I can tell you that for the most part the care is awesome in the hospital. I had zero complaints about Aceves and his team. It was the first spinal I ever in my life. And it went very well. No problems with it at all. I had very little post op pain, one tiny episode of nausea (my first sip of water---which was cured by an IV medication) and no vomiting. I am about 8 weeks and a couple days post op and have lost a total of 79 lbs (total pre op dieting and postop) 39 post op. I thought it would be more, but the scale keeps moving albeit slowly. Our AZ weather has been bloody hot lately but the pool is too cold to swim because our overnight temps cool the Water too much. So I am not exercising like I was. Need to get back into that. Bottom line: I have not had one second of regret for the surgery choice, the surgeon choice, or anything else. I feel so much better. All my GERD has disappeared. Not one episode of it since surgery (knock on wood). But I am pretty much following the program to the letter (except I need more exercise). Our temps are expected to cool off next week. and I start classes after that too so that will get me moving more. GG

    Let's count Dr. Aceves Patients!

Nina moderates the site. This is strange - I don't post on the Yahoo Group very much, but I get their messages all the time. I've definitely seen messages about complications. Recently there was even a "Dr. Aceves is not all he's cracked up to be" type of message. So I'm not sure if your experience was really censorship or just some sort of technical difficulty. The one time I wanted to post a question and it didn't go through, Nina e-mailed me back to say she couldn't approve it. I was looking for a plastic surgeon for a friend and she said in the past patients have recommended surgeons and someone went to a plastic surgeon and had major complications, so they no longer allow posts advertising surgeons who are not someone Dr. Aceves trusts and knows is competent. That said, I trust this board more regarding complications and the like. Even though I personally have not seen proof of censorship of bad experiences there, I'm obviously a bit suspicious that it could happen there.

    Scared

I'm 5yrs out from Realize Banding. Right after surgery, I was in so much pain, they had to keep me in hosp. for a day. It was supposed to be an outpatient procedure. I think the pain originated from the port being sewn to my tummy muscle. My band was installed with no fill in it. I wonder why your new band is "too tight'? I'm pretty sure it's common practice to install the bands empty, though I don't know-know. Have you had any fills yet? My experience: A too-tight fill results in those awful hacking night coughs, bad burning acidy tummy & esophogus that could result in ulcers, vomiting (usually a mucus plug comes out & not much more), and no weight loss. It's important to get Fluid out asap if your band is filled too tight to prevent other medical complications like I've had.

    Waiting for a surgery date!

I am going through the Weight Loss Center at the hospital in Chattanooga. But my insurance requires a psychological evaluation performed by a psychologist or psychiatrist not associated with the surgical program. Which includes 1. Documentaion of the individual's willingness to compl with both the pre and pos operative treatment plans 2. Interview and evaluation 3. MMPI 2 4. EDI-2 or EAT - 26 Everything else is through them. But I was not aware that I had to get the psy Dr. myself. They give me a list of 3 that I could contact that they could recomend, only one of them accepted my insurance but they were so booked up that I had to wait 3 weeks. It was orriginally 6 weeks but I had them put me on the cancelation list and they called me and moved it up. I even tried calling several out of the phone book, but most of them did not do the testing that I needed done or would not accept my insurance. Anyway I finally got it done and hopefully he has sent in the result to the surgeons yesterday like he said he would. I live on the state lines between NC, GA, and TN, so my insurance gets complicated alone with the medical Dr.'s being able to cross the state lines. Like I live in Murphy, NC but my insurance will not cover me at the Murphy hospital or the NC Dr.'s. ????????? I have also had to have surgery approval from my lung Dr., heart Dr. and diebetic Dr., and they have required alot of test of their own to give me their approval. I had all of that ready when I got to he surgeons visit because I knew that I was going to need that. I am a very high risk patient for surgery. Boy this has made me tired just talking about it! hahahaha I am really glad that all of it is over now. Now I am ready for the surgery!

    Waiting for a surgery date!

Melboyd, That is one of the same reason I chose the band. Also, I am diebetic and I don't like the risk of the other because of the complications of healing. I want to lose weight not kill myself. Good job on losing the weight too. I have lost 12lb. and I am so ready to lose more.
