Hi Brit, Sliders are 2 things: 1)foods that can pass through the stoma without much resistance or 2) foods/liquids that can help normal foods pass through the stoma easier. Examples of sliders are liquids, foods that melt into liquid state, or solids that have lots of liquid that helps it pass. Foods that pass easier: any drink, milkshakes, icecream, yogurts, Soups, chocolate, Cookies, sometimes cake (usually any junk food ahhah) Foods that help foods pass easier: sauces, dressings, broths, applesauce, (there's tons of example and I hope others will share theirs..but this is a good example to derive from) While on topic..a side comment Sliders are often referred to in a negative light. Examples are drinking your calories to avoid getting stuck. You tend to consume more calories if you do liquids (think milkshakes, junkfood) and people often either gain weight or are not getting the right nutrition. However, sliders are also a +. For instance, I usually have trouble w/ chicken no matter how well I cook it. But if I put just a little bit of sauce, it's enough to help it slide through (not quickly but it doesnt bind and eventually get regurgitated) (same w/ pork chops and applesauce . This is a huge PLUS and we should be mindful of how to use certain foods to assist us if we have trouble foods that are actually good for us (like chicken)

Challenges transitioning from liquids
OscarsMom posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Had VGS 12/29 - 11 days post op. After a brutal first three days, I forced myself off of pain meds, started walking 2-4 miles a day and now I feel outstanding, lots of energy, minimal discomfort. Doing fine with liquids apart from some minor cramps/spasms if I swallow too fast, or it is too hot/cold. However, I was told I could eat sf jello and ff plain greek yogurt but both of those cause immediate gripping stomach pain. Had 2 tablespoons of greek yogurt last night, terrible stomach ache followed by diarrhea. Is this normal? By my schedule I'm supposed to be able to transition to eggs and apple sauce later this week but I am petrified to try anything else. I'm SOOOOOO sick of liquids and want to be able to slowly transition but I'm very nervous. -
Is it normal to be hungry? (5 days post-op) I admit physically I feel better than I have been. Yesterday was the first day I was able to consume 78g of protien (24oz liquid) and nothing else but about 32oz of H20. Today is the same, except I know I'm taking larger sips at a time (maybe a 1/2 tsp?) and I was able to finish the 8 oz protei:confused:n drink in less than a 1/2 hour. Oh yeah, I even had a lowfat yogurt! I think I'm ready for the "mushies" but don't know what to start with. Any suggestions???:scared:

Hi fellow bandsters! I'm 5 days post-op and I'm dying of hunger! Lol not really, but I'm seeking something more substantial than the broths, shakes, yogurt and milk I've been living on since Monday. I am allowed "strained low-fat cream soups" so I am looking for suggestions! I'm preparing for a trip to the grocery store tonight so what do you recommend? I'm not very familiar with cream Soups so input is appreciated :-)

This Saturday May 3 will be two weeks since I was banded. I have really been feeling great, losing weight very easily and keeping liquids down with no problem. Today I had severe left shoulder pain, which has not happened after the first 4 days or so. I ended up taking a cup of coffee, adding frozen yogurt, protein powder and ice, mixing it up in the blender and drinking about 4 ounces of it, it totally helped me to pass the gas and go to the restroom. Is this normal? Has anyone else had this much gas at 2 weeks past surgery day? My stomach is sore at the port area as well. Is this normal? Other than that I truly feel great! I am happy to have had this surgery and very happy for changing my life.

Help!! I'm Pregnant And My Doctors Are Telling Me Different Things!!!
bandster_1007 replied to bandster_1007's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
thanks you guys. i went and got an unfill yesterday because if it weren't for liquid calories i was only averaging 200 calories in solid food, and it wasn't healthy stuff, it was just what i could get down. since my unfill i have had roast (omg that was sooooooooooooo good), fruit and yogurt parfait (again..awesome), and cheesy bread..i know bad..i was picking it up for kid and babysitter, and was eating on the run. the doctor that saw me yesterday was upset that i did not come in sooner. he said that my eating habits were not acceptable period. he said i needed to be eating at least 1500 calories a day and eating fruits, veggies, etc. he took out 2 cc's. the anxiety of eating is gone. i can eat a decent amount now, without eating a ton. i felt full for the first time last night since my last fill. that was comforting..made me sleepy. and i ate normal portion sizes, deck of cards for the meat, 1 small piece of a potato, 1/4 cup green Beans. i have read in several places that ketones can cause severe mental retardation or low iq's in babies. i had ketones in my urine at my last doc appointment, so now i'm just trying to make sure to get myself out of ketosis. -
Are you doing preop diet? I added Greek yogurt. Go for Fage or chobani because they have a lot of Protein in it and that will keep you fuller longer.

Well...I weighed myself this morning, and i've lost 10 pounds, so i'm pretty happy about that. No change in exercise, just stopped eating basically. I'm on yogurt alone. I tried the cottage cheese and i can't stand it. So, yeah, brings me closer to goal...I think that being a young man has something to do with it, since it's easier for me to lose weight...although it has never felt easy for me in the weight department. I'm only staying motivated by reminding myself of the greater good.

Oh and eggface has some great Greek yogurt dipping sauce ideas. One that stands out in my mind was with cucumber Lemon Greek seasoning garlic powder. Use it as a dip for meat- lamb would be delicious with this I think!

You can also make ranch dip out of the plain no fat Greek yogurt. Just add a package of the mix to 16 oz of the yogurt. Great for dipping veggies or on a baked potato if you want all those carbs.

Protein Powder And Yogurt?
Vicki Loichinger replied to eeyoregirl1970's topic in Protein, Vitamins, and Supplements
I am pre op and I have been eating a lot of yogurt and adding one scoop of unflavored protein powder to it. I have had a bad tooth for the past several weeks and got it pulled last week. So I feel like I have had kinda a trial run eating the yogurt and getting the protein in. One of my favorites has been the Dannon greek 2xprotein vanilla yogurt with a scoop of unflavored protein and about a tablespoon of sugar free pudding mix, pistachio yum, but I bet that won't be good to soon after surgery, but banana pudding has been good. It is like eating some fancy desert to me. NOW all this may change after surgery. But this could be a good option for those that can't stand to drink the shakes. -
Are there any other newbies on Clear & Full Liquids
Lillyanne_M replied to grandmom4x's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was banded on the 9th and am on a full liquid diet until Jan 23rd. Today I had: 8 oz. Protein shake made with 1% milk (I can drink about 6 oz. at a time slowly - I finished the last 2 ounces about 1/2 hour later) 4 oz. light fat free peach yogurt 4 oz. blended soup Minute Maid Light fruit drink. Usually I eat about 4 oz. of something and feel satisfied. I can't say I feel full - I haven't felt the same kind of fullness as I used to feel before the band - it's different. I ate almost 6 oz. of yogurt the other day and knew after the last bite that I should have stopped one bite earlier. I just felt kind of bad in an undefinable way. So, I just don't try to eat any more than 5 oz of anything other than a clear liquid. -
:confused2:Hi, my name is Jasmyn, and I was banded June 2007 but it has been very frustrating. I have only lost 20lbs. I seem to be stuck at a weight for a long time, and seem to have lots of difficulties with eating. I have had a couple fills, and even had some taken out because I was not able to get anything down exept Water. Many of my friends and family have told me I should just have the band removed. It is disappointing. The dr has done all the blood work, and said everything is normal, that it is either I am eating to much sugary foods, or not exercising enough. I eat a small amount at one time, a few bites at most, and seem to always have problems with reflux. Within a matter of minutes whatever I eat comes back up. I haven't figured out what I can and cannot eat and have just become frustrated about eating at all. If it isn't soft pureed food, I can't get it to stay down. Dr did say my protien and Calcium were slightly low at my one year checkup. I can't eat meat, too chunky. Any help would be good. I am thinking maybe a mentor might help. Daily foods I can eat, instant oatmeal, yogurt, applesauce, puddings, cottage cheese, cheese of any sort is usually ok. Soup, broths really soft noodles, small so, macaroni and cheese, spaghetti's Veggies, fruits, meats, eggs, breads are all problems! Any other suggestions?! Thanks! Jasmyn

Scared and don't know what to do... help
MCE1205 replied to daisychain40's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I am 6 month post op RNY. I never was afraid but I was prepared mentally to live a life of eating differently. I do admit the first few weeks were difficult in getting in all the required Protein shakes and Water. I just did the best I could. I had absolutely no pain or discomfort. I did however feel exhausted the first few months and both my surgeon and my primary told me to be patient. I was and slowly my energy level came back. I can practically eat anything I want but stay away from sugar. meat is difficult to process so I eat more chicken, pork and fish. I love yogurts and fresh fruits. I have absolutely no regrets and find that it is a lot easier then I anticipated so I am very happy. My health has improved tremendously too! Good luck to you. Confused At How I Feel After My Fill
superluli replied to n2animals's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I have a similar problem and I don't know what to do. I have 6.25 CCs in my 10cc band and it hurts with every bite beginning to end. I learned about this 'have a hot drink first' and it helps me in the morning with Breakfast, but in the evening when if i have Soup before my meal I end up eating more than I should and my appetite is quite big for the rest of the evening and night and I find myself getting tempted by everything! But if I have no soup then I can only eat like yogurt. I need a middle ground -
Confused At How I Feel After My Fill
papoose replied to n2animals's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
When I have that first bite problem, I drink something hot first thing in the morning and then wait about 30 minutes or 1 hour then i can eat yogurt, oatmeal. Try something soft. Then by lunchtime I can eat, but i will eat small bites and chew chew. By dinnertime I am good to go. My Dr. told me we are tight in the a.m. I guess from our band relaxing during the night. Good luck to you. -
What Do You Eat To Fulfill A 1200 Calorie A Day?
abs6angels replied to Soylabean's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I think maybe you are eating too many "liquids" (oatmeal and yogurt are liquids) anything you have to eat with a spoon is a liquid and passes thru band quick, therefore being hungrier later- try a solid protein- like a protein bar or egg or something.I'm struggling with the amt of calories i need myself!( see my "ughhh so frustrated" topic lol -
What Do You Eat To Fulfill A 1200 Calorie A Day?
Yogi0so replied to Soylabean's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I use mihealth to log everything that I eat. It keeps track of my calories and nutrition and gives me a summary daily. I don't do well with out it, it is SO easy to slip in a couple hundred calories accidentally. I'm doing about 1100 calories a day. I need over 60 grams protein a day. I usually eat eggs for breakfast (so easy to make a big batch and portion for the week). I have a protein drink after I exercise (odwalla or bolthouse), salmon or homemade white chili for dinner and a protein bar as a snack. I'm not hungry very often and I'm getting 70+ grams of protein. I have had to stop doing all liquid calories (oragne juice is my bad) except my post workout protein drink. Nuts are a great snack too and I buy the little packs and carry them with me. I dont leave the house without a protein bar and bottle of water, ever. A couple sugar free jolly ranchers cover me when I have a sweet attack. Carbs (yogurt, oatmeal, etc) tend to trigger hunger for me so I'm very low carb. -
I am officially 3 weeks out today(sleeved 12/08/15). I am having a very difficult time keeping anything other than Greek yogurt and cottage cheese down. I have also been eating small amounts of sliced cheese because my new tummy can tolerate it and I'm so hungry. I am taking Omeprazole and don't have any typical reflux, I eat very slow(chew, chew, chew and time my meals out according to surgeon), I stop drinking 30 minutes before, nothing to drink during, and nothing 30 minutes after eating. I am starting to feel like a bulimic throwing up everything I eat. I am going to be calling my surgeon tomorrow because I don't want to wait until my one month on the 8th. Any suggestions? Anyone else experience this? I am not even close to my protein goals with just the Greek yogurt and cottage cheese. I am managing to get in my water. I told my surgeon I was throwing up at my two week follow up, but at that point I was only on puréeds and only really having problems with eggs, which he said is a very common issue with eggs. I am on soft foods if I didn't mention that before, but if I can't literally put my fork through it, I don't eat it. This is not fun!

pureed baby foods was on my list of approved solids. However, I could not bring myself to even attempt the pureed baby food meats. No way,no how. For my mushie stage, I pureed/chopped meat in a mini food processor with either mustard or light miracle whip/mayo. Chewing is essential in the mushy stage. I ate tuna A LOT, and just chewed and chewed until it was mushy in my mouth. I had mashed potatoes, and greek yogurt through a lot of the mushy stage as well.
