TammyFaye replied to jasyka18's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
I had my lapband placed 3 yrs ago never regretting a day of it...I have done exceptionally well and have kept my weight off and controlled for the past three yrs. I was on an insulin pump for over 10 yrs and I no longer take anything whatsoever for diabetes because it disappeared along with the extra weight...I have my life back and I am in control of my weight...Best decision that could have made.......You must be ready mentally for it to a be a success....... -

I looked over your past posts to see if there was something useful that I could add to this thread. On 10/7, you said you were 11 weeks out. On 10/13, you were 12 weeks post op. Now you are are 10 weeks post-op? Is that a typo? -

I think the doctors should approve this WLS for all the young ones !! I would have done anything to have had this opportunity 10 years sooner !! -
I've read that what you are feeling is pretty normal. Once I got my surgery date I started feeling a little anxiety but I know it's all in my head. I have a friend who had surgery about 10 months ago and she has an occasional drink. Usually it's just one and she doesn't finish it. So it's possible you might be able to have one every now and then. It's also possible that when you decide to have one, your taste won't be the same and you won't like it. But it's better to be healthy and have no pizza and margaritas than to die early from something that could have been prevented!

Don't worry. I had surgery June 8th and I had my first stall a couple weeks ago. It lasted at least 10 days. I was feeling depressed and like a failure. I went on to you tube and found this girl called sleevedforlife and watched her videos and it made me feel so much better. Everything she went through and experienced I was going through. It also made me laugh with helped. Going on this board helped too. Don't worry you will do great Just keep following your plan -

Carbs are not the enemy. Heathly carbs (from whole grains, low fat dairy, veggies) are used for energy. By not eating enough carbs, you're causing an imbalance in your system and probably not getting enough calories overall as well. This can push you into ketosis, which in itself isn't a bad thing, but it sounds like this isn't happening since in ketosis you would definitely be seeing weight and fat loss. Eating around 50 carbs/day is still considered low carb, a good goal to shoot for (and my NUT said I should not even be restricting it that much but I feel like I am sensitive to carbs). I was told to stick to a diet of protein/healthy carbs/healthy fats as the main sources of my calories and to get my calories up to 1,000-1,200 ASAP after a month or two, and the actual counts on the individual stuff should work out just fine. But you should have a personalized calorie goal from your own NUT, so please discuss in detail with them! If you're not eating enough total calories, then your body will go into starvation mode, slowing your metabolism and making it even harder to lose any weight. And hormones can also get really, really screwed up during weight loss, so it is a good idea to get your doc to monitor your hormone levels if you are seeing weirdness with your cycle. I always gain about 3-4 pounds of water weight during my period, but when I finish, I lose that weight and the weight loss gears back up... until the next month... so it has been a few pounds a week or month lost, then gain 2-4 pounds and then lose 4-5 pounds once I'm through my period. There have been weeks of no loss in there too, but again, I still see a decrease in the tape measure overall. And absolutely take some measurements - even if it's been several months since surgery. It is very comforting to see the inches lost when the needle on the scale doesn't budge!! I was classified as a slow loser, but those months I lost less than 5 pounds total? I lost lots of INCHES - lost fat and gained (leaner/heavier) muscle! In 7 months I've lost 10 inches off my waist and I have real muscle definition visible in my legs and arms now. -

I don't have any specific advice re "I eat when the kids are too much for me to handle." However, I do think a good cognitive behavioral therapist could help you identify some DIFFERENT ways to respond to that situation. And I do think that cognitive behavioral therapy would be good for you, since you already know that your NUT's 800 calories and no more comments generated some very negative feelings about yourself that you haven't shaken yet. 800 calories, no more, huh? Maybe you'd like to know that eating 800 calories a day and no more is NOT how I lost my weight. My bariatric P.A. told me this instead: After four months, of eating 800 calories/day (which is pretty much all I could eat in those early days post-op), she said: "I want you to get up to 1,000 calories/day before you're six months post-op. And then I want you to get up to 1,200 calories/day before you're at eight months post-op. That way, you will avoid teaching your body how to survive on so few calories you'll have a hard time maintaining your weight long-term." So I did. And by the time 8.5 months post-op rolled around, I'd hit my weight goal of 150 pounds. In the last five months I've gone on to lose another 10 pounds and am now holding steady at 140 pounds. And I now eat an average of 1,700 calories/day. On rare days, I eat only 1,200 calories or go up to 3,000 calories (only twice). But mostly it's 1600-1800 calories. However, please know that most of those calories (while I was losing and now that I'm maintaining) come from highly nutritious foods -- 80-100 grams of Protein (from animal, dairy, plant sources), at least 5 colored veggies and fruits, whole grains (like whole wheat, quinoa, brown rice), 21-30 grams of Fiber, and at or under the recommended sodium levels, etc. I try to walk or exercise daily. I don't have small kids, but my lifestyle is much more active than it once was. I drink 64 ounces of Water and other liquids daily. So why not ditch that stinkin' thinkin' you have been stuck in and recommit yourself to doing all the things you know you need to do. I will add that since I've been in maintenance I do have some treats (wine and dark chocolate, mostly). But those were very, very rare when I was still losing. Since you're not at maintenance yet and want to lose more weight, I would clean the cabinets and get rid of all the things that tempt you. One final bit of advice: The eating we do after WLS is not just to lose weight -- it's to rebuild our health and sustain our physical and mental energy for a lifetime of normal weight and good health. Be good to your body and your mind. Give them both the nutrition they are craving. You know you want this. You can do this. Just do it. -
Hang in there. Things for me got way better around day 10. I still had shoulder and neck pain until a few days ago. Take your pain meds and it will pass with time. Drinking or eating too much or too fast may make it worse, as will certain sitting or laying positions. It does get better and quickly. Yogurt already is good I wasn't even close to water or protein goals until day 8, a few days out and even tiny pills stuck in my throat.

almost dumb question- PUREED foods- HELP ME!
mi75 posted a topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
hey all, I am still pre-op but having a really really really tough time with this! my surgeon does Clear liquids for 5 days, then full liquids for 5 days THEN the pureed foods. I have two kids and practically couldn't feed them baby food because I was STRONGLY averted to the sight and smell. I often got sick from it. the simple THOUGHT of cooking meats, Soups, main courses, etc and then blending them....oh dear GOD just makes my stomach turn. badly. just thinking about it. what am I to do????? the pureed foods are from day 10-21 post-op. I'm pretty sure I'll have some hunger by then. the suggestions from the surgeon include pureeing chicken, boiled eggs, chili, shepards pie, and other things. GROSS. period. now, having something MASHED would be ok. but fully blended would do me in. please don't think that i'm being obnoxious or smart aleck, I simply cannot even mentally get myself to the idea of eating pureed foods. I don't know what to do. I wonder if staying on the full liquids is even an option? I know the point is to gradually phase your pouch into accepting new amounts and textures but this one is a huge mental block for me. I meet with the nutritionist in a couple weeks and seriously, this is my only question for them! -
Need Encouragement and/or a slap on the head!
pumpkin07 replied to TxSam's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Well lookey here Sam, it takes time. And your body does stall a few weeks after surgery. And then you'll suddenly have this week in which every day you lose a lb and it is really fun. I did that and now I'm up a lb. But most people seem to lose 10-12 lbs a month so I think you've done great. Weight loss didn't stop, your body just needs a minute to hold onto your fat. But with the calorie restriction it can't hold onto it forever. Be patient, stop weighing. Weigh only one day a week and record it and you will see progress. If you weigh the other days that is just for fun. -
did you have any complications and what were they?
Megabuck886 replied to birdmadgirl's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was readmitted to hospital 2 days after my initial discharge... Hadn't been able to tolerate liquid meds- caused nausea, vomiting and dry-heaving. On top of all this, I had the worst diarrhea 5 days post-op through day 8... My surgeon thinks it might be a new lactose allergy, so when I'm feeling better i'll test milk out again and see how well I tolerate it. With the meds (Zantac, roxicet), I found that each time after I took them, I would instantly start to dry heave (surprisingly the med actually stayed down each time... Don't know how!), I think it had something to do with the smell/taste... I've always been a gaggy person if I smell or taste something gross, but in this situation I stayed nauseous all day long, unable to get in my liquids so ended up readmitted for dehydration and to sort-out my meds plan. Haven't been able to take anything for pain now except childrens tylenol, and I'm on Prevacid solutab now instead of Zantac- something about chewables go down fine. I also have a PRN order for compazine (anti-nausea med) that is a suppository... A little gross but when you feel like crap and cannot keep anything down it definitely works fast and does the trick (plus I'm a nurse, so it doesn't gross me out too bad). I'm home now, and feeling MUCH better-- able to meet fluids and Protein goals each day, but still cannot do liquid meds (I tried again, and failed again). That being said, I still have some occasional pain but I'm just grinning and bearing it... Another complication, though I bet it's fairly common, is that I became really itchy around my incisions which were all covered with steri-strips. I also developed a warm red rash around them too- kinda bumpy, almost looks like poison ivy. It had been 9 days since surgery, so the clinic nurse had me remove the steri-strips (in case they were causing skin irritation), and apply hydrocortisone cream... While I'm really happy that all the incisions are healing nicely (doesn't look infected, it's definitely an irritation due to the adhesive) nothing has changed so far, so I'm going to call my doctor's office in the morning if it's still not better when I wake up. With all these issues it's been a rough 10 days, but I have yet to regret a thing! I know this was the right decision for me and for my future, and I am so incredibly grateful for all of the support I've received from the message boards-- you all have been so great! -
1 month after post op loss
tigerbelle replied to FRED1977's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
just to show the differences among us...I had my surgery 10 days before lipsticklady, and my surgery day weight was 5 lbs more than hers...over the 4 months, I have lost only 45 lbs. compared to her 68....we also have the same goal currently of a weight of 150 lbs....it may take me longer than lipsticklady to get there, but I still plan on getting there, so when we both achieve our goal, it won't really matter in the long run how long it took each of us to reach it...I do understand your concerns, though, about whether you are "normal" and I am still always comparing myself to others here who are on the same timeline as me...I recall that I lost around 20 pounds my first month post-op, and the biggest monthly weight loss I have had has been that first month post-op -

Hello to anyone who's keeping track...We have a surgery date!!! I say "we", because my hubby is going to have his as well!! We're going to Dr. Rumbaut in Monterry and our surgeries will be April 12 - for $1000 more than it would have cost for just me to have it here in Chattanooga!! We're pretty excited! In preparation for the surgery, we are really watching our calories (daily - 1100 or less for me and 1600 or less for him) and we are walking for 30 minutes everyday. We start the pre-op liquid diet 10 days before the surgery. Other than what we are already doing, does anyone have any advice or suggestions? I'm open to anything anyone has to offer! Thanks for all the support! Christy <>< -

What happens in 20 years.....?
Jesangel76 replied to Painter Girl's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
From what I've researched thus far, there is no known life expectancy of the band because it's only been around in the states for 10 years and it's only 12 years old in France. I think about the risk factors too and of the fact that once it's on it's there for life. If removed, patients turn to their old eating habits and gain the weight back and then some. Apparently, your stomach gets a little bigger after you've had the band for a while. So, if the band is removed you're able to hold more food. It's a permanet solution. I wasn't too thrilled about that, but then I think about my health NOW and how I seriously need to lose this weight. Like the previous reply-ers - you have to think about your health and not worry about the band itself. I'm going for my surgery towards the end of Nov and I try not to think about the fact that this thing will be in my body forever. I only think about the health benefits. I'd like to be alive long enough to find out just how long does this thing last... Good luck! -
I'm so uncomfortable
sassyozzie replied to myboyz#1fan's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hello I was banded on 10/01/2011 and I have been feeling tender and uncomfortable and when trying to sleep I am continuously waking up. I should ask how long does it take to sleep back in your normal position if you sleep on your tummy??? I have had to take panadol the Doc gave me stronger painkillers however I do not like taking them. Unfortunately I experienced an infected injection site and am on antibiotics; this was and is an uncomfortable and concerning complication as it may mean that if it does not clear up I may have to be rehospitalised to have the site drained (bummer). All crappiness aside I am hoping 'this to shall pass' and I will feel better in a couple of days. Thankyou for all the amazing posts that I have read because they have helped wonderfully with answering some of my questions Take Care -
Restriction? or Too Tight?
mirech replied to jswright1297's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, I am going through the same thing you are. I got my 3rd fill and I was on liquids and mushys for the next 4 days. On my 5th day I went on a business trip to Vegas and I have not been able to eat anything at all. I can only drink Water, shake and eat Soups. But not creamy soups. It's not a good feeling because everything I threw up everything. So, my first two months I lost 19 lbs. for the last three weeks I hadn't lost anything at all. Then after 5 days of not eating anything, just liquids, I lost 7 lbs. How does that happen? I was thinking about going to the doctor but I have lost so much weight that I don't want to go. Oh and another thing, I am not hungry! So, here it is two weeks after my 3rd fill and I've decided to just eat soups until my next doctor's visti (in two weeks) so that I can loose more weight because I was at a plateau! -
The first four to six weeks are not for losing weight. Some people do, some don't. Now is the time to heal. Start monitoring all of your calories - use something like The Daily Plate. Get a fitness monitor, Fit Bit is $99 and offers online diet tracking and will monitor your activity. Move more and make sure you're not drinking calories. Eating what you're eating at 19 days out is totally normal and acceptable. Though doctors suggest liquids, mushies, soft, then adding foods gradually - you may drive yourself mad sticking to that. Just east sensibly. Two other things to note: Women will gain between 5-10 lbs every month just by biological nature. It comes off a week or so later. After starting back to new foods you may gain 1-10 lbs in Water weight (from the salt content) but you'll lose it within a week. You'll learn that when you eat very clean six days a week then indulge on that seventh day that you can gain anywhere from 5-10 lbs as a woman (men can gain 15-25 lbs) all in water weight. Within a week it's gone and you're likely down an extra pound or two. I hope that helps a bit.

I'm 10 days post op and I've been craving a sandwich. Well I broke down and ate one yesterday and I feel so guilty. I'm suppose to Be on liquids still but i took small bites and chewed it until it was like liquid. Almost took me 45 minutes to eat it. I mean if the world is going to end tomorrow I didn't want to go without eating a sandwich. Lol ( just kidding) but I am now staying strong on my liquids until Monday which is when my mushies begin. I feel bad though!
