  1. Sounds a lot like the first week I was in the hospital after surgery. My chest was constantly hurting, O2 levels were around 75, pulse dropped to 35 all the time, etc. i had a fever almost constantly the first week around 100. it was a good thing I was already in the hospital so I could ping the nurse to have them check stuff out. The gas was the worse part because I could get any liquids in without excruciating pain when sipping. Everything got better at around 5 days post op, but it was about 3 weeks Neil I started to feel 1/2 way normal again without feeling completely drained. Oh and I did spend the first 3 weeks blowing into the spirometer until I got my lung capacity back. The surgery really did a number on my lung capacity, but fortunately no pneumonia. You should probably just go the the hospital for sanity checks, just in case there really is something going on.

    smoking b4 surgery

I was really freaked out during the information seminar I attended. They said NO smoking at all for 2 months before surgery. So I did it! My GP wrote me a RX for Chantix. It stops the nicotine in your blood stream from hitting that happy place in your brain that says "gotta have a cigarette because it feels good!) Okay, that's my unscientific version of how it works. You take the pills for 7 days before your quit date, quit, and then keep taking them for around 12 weeks. I just finishing my starter pack of pills and will be using the continuation pack for another 4 weeks. I can truly and honestly say this has been a breeze. I have smoked for 20 years, stopped during my 2 pregnancies and kept starting up again. This time I really and truly feel it's for good. Just one person's story. Good luck to you.

    BM's after surgery

Everyone's body is different, but stay on top of it, I was a week out before I had my first BM, and then it was another week, I could feel the discomfort building. Milk of magnesium is the only laxative my dr allows. It works great for me. Stay up on your water, and I found dulcolax suppositories sometimes can help get things started. I currently take benefiber each morning to and it seems to be helping.

    dizziness

I just had labs done with my PCP about a month or so ago for something unrelated. It was kind if spur of the moment, so I wasn't fasting so blood sugar was a little high and hormones were a little out if whack but otherwise they were good. I wasn't experiencing the frequency of dizziness so I didn't even bring it up to her. Although I think I had "white coat syndrome" in the doctors office causing a higher blood pressure reading, I checked it in a grocery store a couple weeks ago and it was very low....so I'm thinking that could be it. @@bikrchk I will take your advice and try the Gatorade and see how that works! Otherwise it's back to the doctor for me!
  5. I'm nearly 4 months out, so still a newb, but I had the same concerns you did, so I thought I'd chime in on my experience thus far. I started back running at 6 weeks post-op. Around 2-2/12 months I was back to my pre-surgery lifting weight. At first I felt off...little dizzy, weak, just not 100%, or even 75%. However, with each week it got better and I listened to my body vs. pushing through. Around 10 weeks post-op I started to feel much better. I'm running farther and faster than I have in over a decade. I am trying to figure when/what to eat before an intense workout because I now get nauseated and heart burn easier.
  6. I am new to the process. I am 5'3, 200 lbs. (bmi 36). I also have a comorbidity. I went to the seminar so far and meet with the surgeon next week. What should I expect at the visit and has anyone with blue cross of North Carolina run into any problems?

    5 wks

I'm in my 5th week also and on my 2nd day of feeling the same way. I just feel like I have a qweezy stomach. Every time I think of eating or drinking anything it makes me feel sick. Maybe its part of the healing process that our body does. I hope it goes away soon!!! Kristi

    I'm hungry!

I was really hungry the first couple of weeks post surgery while on liquids. Not sure of your plan but it helped me to not be so hungry to have creamy Soups, thinned yogurt and keeping up on my Protein shakes. I've moved up to purees now and that helps even more. Make sure you're getting in all you're supposed to. You will make it through.

    "NERVES" - Surgery June 17th!

On the scale of 1 - 10 (1 being nothing and 10 being terrible) I would probably rate it a 7-8 in the hospital. I have low pain tolerance and didn't want the pain meds because it made me sick. However, once the found the right pain med to give me I was in heaven. I was able to walk around and was great. After day 2 I was more of a (5) until about the 5th day. Then I had to go back to school - I'm in Cosmetology school where I work on my feet 8 hours a day and was completely fine. I was probably a (2) but hardly felt it at all. Definitely the pain is temporary. We've all been there for sure. It gets better...even if it doesn't feel like it will. I remember asking, "Is this going to be forever?" but before I knew it, I woke up and was itching to get to the gym! You can do it!! There's no doubt that you can it! Do attend the support meetings, and even watching shows on TV like Extreme Makeover - Weight Loss Edition help. Find as much support you can, and don't forget that you're your own biggest fan. It didn't take a few weeks to put the weight on, so don't forget that it will take more than a few weeks to get the weight off. But I can promise you that the day you buy a smaller pair of jeans, you will never want to give up! Definitely hit me up if you ever feel nervous. That goes for anyone. I can be a great listener. I will listen to your complaints, and your excitements! Good luck to you! You'll all do great!

    "NERVES" - Surgery June 17th!

I was banded 4/12. The fear began a week prior to my surgery. I started doubting the potential success of the surgery. I did not tell anyone, but my husband. However, a funny thing happened, I picked up the phone three days before the surgery to let my mom know that I was having surgery. I did this because at the last minute, I began to think that I will not wake up from the surgery. That stayed with me until they took me back to be prepped on the day of my surgery. I had not seen my cycle in months so I started wishing that I would have a positive pregnancy test at the hospital. Surprise, surprise, surprise-My cycle was on when I went to change for the surgery so there was no backing out. The nurse was so nice and talked to me so much that I did not have time to be scared. Luckily, I was the second surgery that morning and the one before me ended early. So I did not have a lot of time to sit and think. Within twenty minutes of getting changed, I had the IV placed, then my doctor walked in with his reassuring smile. As he walked out, the Anesthesiologist walked in. Within minutes my CPAP machine was taken and checked. Before I could turn to relax, the anesthesiologist(sp?) came back and added a cocktail to my line. He then unlocked my bed and began rolling me back. I made a bet with him that I will make it into the surgery room without going to sleep. Just before going through the door they had me to switch beds and the next thing I knew was that I was trying to get up, but I couldn't. I asked the nurse, "how much longer before they begin?" She patted me on the shoulder and said that they were all done and just waiting for me to wake up. I was in the recovery room. So do not worry, just show up and before you know it, it will be over. 11. So, my doctor is a great surgeon, but not great on the nutrition part and I'm a little lost. I'm 4 weeks PO and trying to get ready for the months ahead. Looking for a nutritionist with experience in bariatric surgery that I can consult with if anyone has any recommendations. Sent from my SM-G950U using BariatricPal mobile app
  12. Recycled, I am not an obsessive person, I do not weigh myself several times a day. I do not know why you would say that?! I weigh once a week because I was told too by my bariatric team, I was originally only going to measure myself. So I was only asking because I am gaining weight and as I said I was not worried about losing massive weight I was only concerned about the weight gain part of it.

    The Last Supper

i had many. pizza, subs, seafood, stromboli, Pasta, all sorts of appetizers from EVERY restaurant i loved. it went on for about 2 weeks. some friends of mine actually took a notepad and made a list of all of the things they wanted before surgery, and they crossed each one off as they went along... i truly believe there is nothing that i won't be able to have eventually, even a good filet and corn on the cob- hopefully. i'm only 11 days out but so far having NO problems. good luck to you on your pre op!
  14. No game

    fast food.

Yes about the fourth day it got easier I don't know if you have kids and such but for me, I planned meals that where easy as not to suffer to much making food for them. And I also stocked up for after surgery for easy dinners that my husband or kids could make so I didn't have to look at food for a week or so..

    Surgery Canceled ?

I guess the high calcium is a risk as far as anathesia, what ever they would have given me could interact with the high calcium and cause my electrolites to go wacky. it was a risk to my heart, and uncontrolable muscle spasms. it was the anathesia dr that actually canceled it.So I have to take care of this calcium level before I can be banded. from what my primary Dr. can tell, it is probably hyperparathyroidism. Which would probably result in surgery on that. Removal of the BAD parathyroid/s. I am going to try and maintain low quanity of food, and also be very careful on what I eat. No pop, no snacks,no bread, potatoes ect. Of course when I get ready for the band, I will have to do the two week liquid diet AGAIN.... keep me posted on how you and hubby are doing. and feeling. Lois
  16. Hi everyone - I am three weeks post op and live in Ontario, CA. I have been looking for support groups around my area, but haven't been able to find one. I feel a little alone - other than people online of course. I keep thinking it would be great to meet others who have just started their journey, who are already into their journey, or who have marked their paths for us to learn from. I have no idea how to even go about this, so I thought I would just post something here and see if anyone else is near me. Its better than posting on Craigslist - haha! For me, it's hard to explain to my significant other what I am going through, because he does not fully get it. He wants to understand and be involved so that he can help, but on the other hand I know all the research I am doing online, and me being on the computer bother's him as well. The friends I currently have either live really far, or I haven't seen in quite a while. I think it's time for me to make some new friends, and if that can be someone who is going through, or has already gone through what I am going through how perfect would that be.
  17. Hello there! Thank you and Congratulations on your surgery date! You are going to be sooo happy!! I remember pre-op, I was on the liquid diet for 7 days, and it was hard at first, but by day 5 I was getting excited that my surgery was almost here and wasn't hungry any more. I am doing really well post-op - thank goodness. I am a little sore now and then, or if I move too quick in an odd position then I feel a little pinch, but other then that I am good. I am waiting to see if I experience the dreaded three week stall, but the truth I am not really dreading it if I do. I already feel so much better, and have lost 32 lbs in the last 26 days, that if I have to wait a minute for my body to catch up, then it's worth it. Are you excited? Are you nervous? Temecula is really nice - Wine Country!!
  18. Hi Everyone. I'm sorry I didn't respond. I only just got a notification in my mailbox that there were replies to this thread! Thanks for your feedback. To the person who doesn't understand the connection between the surgery and my pains - I don't either. I should be feeling amazing, right? I had an x-ray of my hips as the pain in my left leg is getting worse. Basically what's visible is "normal" deterioration of the joint. I am doing physiotherapy to strengthen the muscles in my butt and legs but it's rather disheartening. My diet isn't fantastic. I would love to be low carbing but can't seem to let go of the carbs (mostly the sugar!). My physiotherapist said to work out on an exercise bike as this is non weight bearing for me. Also Water aerobics is good for me. This week I walked around supermarkets for a couple of hours and I was in major pain. Sheesh. I decided to take a supplement with MSM and glucosamine and also Curcumin which is a major anti inflammatory. Regarding the fish oil that you guys have been advising - I wouldn't take fish oil for all the money in the world. The cold water fish are loaded with mercury and I wouldn't take the molecularly distilled stuff either. All fish oil is heated up to very high temps in order to "remove" the poisons (which is impossible, really) and all oil becomes toxic at those temps. I DO take Omega 3 in the form of Sage - capsules of Chia oil (cold pressed oil), which are very, very high in omega 3. Yesterday, I walked quite a distance because my husband had the car and it was ok. I took it slowly. I don't want to act like an invalid!!! A neighbor is lending me her exercise bike and I hope to get more fit. It's depressing not being able to work out and go walking (real walking). It's so frustrating to feel energetic and able to exercise but not to be able to. I hope the food supplements I started taking start to kick in soon. I really can't believe it's coincidental that my body suddenly started to fall apart right after Vertical Sleeve Surgery. There's got to be a connection.

    Feeling In Denial ?!?!?

So I went from 218.5 to 217.8 after three weeks, does that mean I broke my stall or am I getting my hopes up? Lol

    Overwhelmed...

I am 4 1/2 weeks out and I am soooooo overwhelmed. I am scared to death that my surgery won't work. I am scared to death that I am going to mess this up somehow...I know everyone is different, but I see so many stories of people having problems that I kind of expect myself to have problems, too. I need to go read success stories I suppose...I just need some reassurance that I, too will have a success story and I know there are no guarantees and no promises. Some people seem to get through it effortlessly while others struggle from day one. Which one will I be? It's absolutely too soon to know, and for some reason I am having trouble accepting that today. Any suggestions for how to just trust it? If I do what I am supposed to do, this can work for me, right? This is an emotional roller coaster for sure. I am looking for promises where none exist, I know...I just want to know that I am not alone. Please comment if you had doubts in the beginning, and how you coped...?

I can't eat anything. I seem to be going backwards with my eating. I could more 2 weeks after surgery then I can now. I get the bubbles in my throat and my stomach makes all these weird noises when I do try and eat. Cutting out dairy definitely helped I'm losing dramatically but the only thing I can eat that is solid is fish and occasionally veggies. Sent from my SM-G935V using BariatricPal mobile app

With some things, mostly chicken. They put me on acid reflux medication. Are you on that too? Our tummies are still healing so keep that in mind. Have you tried mashed potatoes? About a week and a half ago that was the only thing I could keep down. Now I'm bad and eat a few French fries now and then lol
  24. Two weeks out here. What symptoms do you have when you're not tolerating a particular food? What have been your experiences?
  25. Hi everyone! ... This is my first post to our community ever. I didn't think I'd be doing this but it feels good to have others to turn to when curiosity comes.. Anyways im scheduled for surgery 02/21/17 I have my final appt. With my surgeon on 02/13/17 ... I've saw many ppl start their liquid diet 2 weeks prior because that's when they were told by surgeon however I meet with mine 1 week prior...
