    loose skin

hi need to slim, first I have to say this you have to do your pre-op for 5 WEEKS??? Holy moley!!! I have to do it for 2 and I have heard of some that just do it for a day and not even at all??? Wow, I am in shock. So anyway to get to your question. It all depends on the person, if your skin still has the elasticity still there it will go back better, but if you've stretched it out so much that you will have a lot, a lot??? Then I suggest doing weight training and exercise as much as you can, cause that will help with the skin tightening. Unfortunately no matter what we are all going to have saggy skin cause of the rapid pace at which the bypass helps you loose that weight. I am just thankful my insurance will allow me the skin removal surgery after the fact. So one day at a time though!!! Hi Tina1577 Thanks for the reply. I guessed id have to do LOTS of exercising... All though I have been a big person all my life I am pretty fit (by my thinking any ways lol)... Yeah in England you have to do the pre op for the amount of weeks before surgery dependent on your BMI. Im having mine done through the NHS. They will do skin removal later on if it is a matter of health, other wise ill have to find it my self . Yeap I agree one day at a time... Thanks
  4. Is anyone going to be in TJ, Mexico on the 19th getting their sleeve? I am! Super excited. My parents are doing it as well, and I couldn't be any more happier than I am right now. Although I am a tad bit nervous--it's only two weeks away! I'm still waiting on my passport, and I'm hoping it comes in this week. Surgery buddies?

    Feeling down

I believe that you're feeling down for no good reason. You seem to be living with some misconceptions about band surgery and what follows. You're also contradicting yourself, if I understand what you're writing. I hope I can help you get to a better place. The first weeks after surgery are about healing from it, not about losing weight. That you lost seven pounds in the first four (is that it?) weeks is quite nice. Lost weight is lost weight. Most people don't feel that "a lot" has changed in the early days. For most, getting the band adjusted to the point where it is a good, working partner takes at least a few adjustments. It may also involve adjusting to remove Fluid. The process is more an art than a science. I know one person who reached his goal and has maintained it for many years with an empty band and never one adjustment. He is quite the exception. Even when a band is at optimal fill, it can change, either suddenly needing more or less saline. I have no doubt that this sounds discouraging to you, but better to know it now than never. In fact, all band people should be aware of this, among other things, from the very first. You say that your appetite and eating pattern has changed. This tells you that the band has begun to pick up steam. A good thing. You last weighed on 13 July, so you don't know what further loss you may have had since the seven lbs. As you seem to feel little control over matters now, I suggest that you try to eat meals on a regular schedule. It's also important to use a food tracker and enter everything. My Fitness Pal is popular and people say it's easy to use. I use the tracker at sparkpeople.com, a large website dedicated to health, fitness, weight loss and the like. It also has a fitness tracker. The site doesn't espouse surgery for weight loss, but I find that no problem. There are "teams" of people who have had surgery. Livestrong.com is a similar site. The amount of saline in an adjustment or in a band is meaningless on its own. What matters is having the amount that will, again, make for a good partnership. You're in good shape.

March 26th is the date for me!

I am March 25th. Now have a sinus infection so trying to get the antibiotics in before then. My husband and myself are doing it at the same time... surgery is the same day. We start our 2 week liquid diet Tuesday. ... not looking forward to it but it will be over before I know it.

    Going back to work?

Everyone is different. My doctor recommended I take off four weeks, and I am lucky I can do that. In general, I would say to expect a minimum of two weeks off work. Some people have very easy surgeries, and are able to get back to work in a week. Some people are still dealing with pain and vomiting three weeks out (I wouldn't want to be at work if I were nauseous and vomiting). No way to know where you will be until after the surgery. However, I certainly wouldn't plan on being back to work in less than a week. Remember this is Major Surgery. In my case, I will be in surgery for 2 1/2 hours, then in the hospital for 2 days recovering. And then I come home and start doing the real recovering. And re-learning how to eat and drink. No way I could do that and work at the same time. And I have a desk job too.

    Help!

I have a friend that got her surgery two weeks ago today! She has been one of those that has been miserably starving. Today she was able to start her soft foods, and do she decided to have a scrambled egg. She's freaking out cause she made 3 eggs and ate them all, slowly, and never felt full until after the third egg. Our question is - how can she eat so much already and experience no pain? Can she stretch out her pouch so soon and on 3 eggs? What should she do to ensure she isn't starving all the time but not eat too much? Any suggestions on what to eat and how much? Is this normal? She's worried her pouch has failed and she will fail miserably! Please please help!! Thanks This how thing is so scary and my surgery is June 7, so I'm not able to answer her cause she started this journey first!!

    Help!

Yes,I'd like to know the answer to that question too. How is it possible to eat three scrambled eggs when the pouch is supposed to be 2 ounces?

My Personal Countdown --- 90 Days And Counting...

I know it may be a bit premature to start my countdown, but why not. These 3 months, 12 weeks, 90 days...etc., will be here before I know it. With my schedule, it will sneak up on me and I will be frantic trying to get everything accoplished within the last few days. My name is PatienlyWtng. I am going to excercise every bit of patience that I can. I have been purchasing what I think I need a little bit at a time. I'm now preparing for two out of town guests who will spend a week with me. Once I have all those plans squared away, I can return the focus on me. Oh and let's not forget, I still have work and school to factor in. So if starting a countdown will help me stay on track...then that is what I will do. Besides, this will be a permanent record of how sane I remained in all of this. I'm ready....for this ride to ExceLlynTLiving! Join me...
  11. So, I'm sitting in the ER while typing this because I apparently wasn't getting enough fluids and wound up with pretty bad dehydration. I woke up feeling extremely nauseated with a terrible headache (basically like I had an awful hangover) and when I tried to sip my Vitamin Water Zero, I couldn't keep it down. (This is the first time I've had trouble with vomiting since the bad reaction I had to the anaesthesia.) I called my surgeon and talked to his PA, who asked me to come in. So I went into the surgeon's office (which is just a block from the hospital) and after she examined me she asked me to go to the ER for fluids and labs. The labs came back and confirmed that my electrolytes were all over the place and something called my "anion gap" was too wide (like the rest of me - haha!) which apparently signifies extreme dehydration. I've gotten 2 IVs of fluids plus a banana bag and two different anti-nausea medications and am feeling loads better, so hoping they send me home soon!! Pretty annoyed with myself that I let this happen, though - I knew I wasn't getting enough fluids but because it's been so uncomfortable I just let it go and assumed I would be fine. Clearly I am not a doctor. Let this be a warning to everyone - drink your fluids, especially during your first few weeks! It's more important than hitting the protein and calories. I'm proof.

    Anyone With Kaiser's Bariactric Program?

I am with Northern California Kaiser and did not have to do any classes. I had to have my psych evaluation, and have other screenings complete like my female annual, and yearly physical. I did have to meet a pre-op weight loss goal before my surgery would be scheduled then a 2 week liver shrinking diet before surgery. I had my surgery in Fresno.

    Few Questions

I had issues swallowing even the tiniest sip of Water for the first few weeks post-op. I would go through this whole process where first I felt constriction in my esophagus, then there would be this gurgling coming all the way up into the back of my throat, and then I'd have to burp. The good news is, it seemed to just be a product of the swelling, so once that went down after a couple of weeks, it became much easier. The key is you still have to drink as much as you possibly can, no matter how unpleasant it is. You need to be sip, sip, sipping. Aim for an ounce of water every 15 minutes, so that's 1/2 cup per hour. I know how tough it is. I remember how miserable it was. But, it is SO IMPORTANT to stay hydrated so you don't end up back in the hospital. As for that dryness and burning in your throat, my guess is acid reflux. Did your surgeon prescribe a PPI?
  15. I still feel weak. I drink my protein shakes and water and I still feel weak. I have no energy to do anything. I'm on puree diet and 8 still feel like this. Sometimes I wish I didn't do the surgery. I was active always on the go and now I'm a total different person. I hope things get better.

    One week post op!

It took me, unfortunetly, about three weeks to relieve all the gas and I did a lot of walking. It was such a yucky feeling but it does pass! Good luck to both of you.

My gas pains went away within the first week. I had the very painful left shoulder syndrom. I'm so thankful that it has left!!!!

    Severe Stabbing Pain!

Yes, it can be normal. But to be safe, I'd call your surgeon for advice. I was on liquids for almost two weeks, not sure what foods you're allowed on your plan at day 6? Might be too soon? My doctor gave me a very low dose of Ativan to help with esophageal spasms (anti-anxiety type medication). It helped during the healing phase!

    Question from a beginner jogger

Good luck and enjoy the process. I found using an elliptical first worked well to learn how to breath better. Less bounce and could keep track of my speed and resistance. Then I started C25K. To get the 5K done I used this Couch to 5K program. (http://www.coolrunni...2_3/index.shtml) I was getting distracted and not paying attention to the timing then I found this cool little site c25kplaylists.com. The music is OK, but the nice thing is the voice prompts to remind me to walk or run. I can concentrate on form and not look at my watch. I just saved the 30 minute song as an MP3 file and put it on my iPod. Speaking of form - http://www.jeffgallo...m/learn/videos/ Jeff has some great tips. Most important take away, short stride, shuffle, feet close to ground to prevent injuries. When I last tried to start running, I didn't do this and ended up hurting myself and was not able to walk for nearly a week. I used his tips and it has lead to pain free running.
  22. I can only answer for myself and even then, my answer will be askew for the simple reason that I am pre-op and do not have a surgery date yet. However, I have tried to incorporate some changes into my lifestyle so that hopefully the transition will not seem as drastic once it occurs. I have made changes such as replacing two of my meals with a Protein shake and have incorporated a 25 minute daily walk for at least 5 days a week. I also try not to drink carbonated drinks, mainly sodas. Most of my liquid intake comes from plain Water, unsweetened green tea and/or coffee. Albeit, to be completely honest with you, there are days were I falter and I end up having two solid meals instead of one or sometimes I will have a glass of soda. But every time that happens, I have no other option than to just stick to it the next day and make sure I follow through. I don't know that I will have the will power to keep up my post-op program, but that is one of the reasons I am making these changes, so the transition will not seem as huge.
  23. I was banded yesterday (7.8.08) and although I am in a bit of pain, I'm doing suprisingly well. What stinks is all these amazing smells coming from my mother's kitchen (we're staying with my family for a few days post-op) and not being able to EAT. I don't want to eat, my stomach is full, and I feel restricted, but the smells are so good! It's such a confusing situation! You really do have to train yourself. In any case, I'm proud to now move over to the Post-Op thread. I'm on clear liquids for 3 days, and full liquids for 5 weeks (although the doctor will allow mushies about week 4 or so). Hard to just have 2 oz at a time! And the gurgling is weird, too!

First Cruise since the Band~~~~Got to get ready! Mentally!

I too am heading on a cruise to the Bahamas this week. I too am nervous about the eating aspect. I am one year out from surgery and have lost 115 lbs. I also found out I am pregnant this week so all the fears of gaining the weight back is on my mind constantly. I guess all the calories from the margarita's I had planned on taking in won't be happening so I probably will not gain what I thought I might. Good luck with your cruise I hope you come back 10 lbs. lighter.
  25. Heading on a cruise to Mexico, Cozumel to be exact, going with 7 other couples for a Thanksgiving Cruise. I am very excited about the cruise, but very nervous too as I know I will be put to the test with ALL that food on the ship. I have determined to eat only lean, high protein and good carbs. If I do slip, I'll hit the Gym and the exercise class! Anyone else have this happen? I am only 15 weeks post band, down 51 lbs so far and want to hit Onderland by Christmas. So I really have to prepare to say NO to MYSELF!:cool2:
