Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Starwarsandcupcakes replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think it depends on when your last WLS was and your surgeon/insurance. I know I had to do the 2 week pre-op liquid diet again for my revision (due to gerd and hiatal hernia of almost my entire gastric sleeve) but I didn’t have to do the nutritional appts or the 6 month preop again because it was within a yr of my VSG. -
Sleeve to bypass hopefully
Dogmom68 replied to lavette43's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Well, I’m pretty disheartened. My surgery was pushed from 8/8 to 8/29 to give my doctor’s office time to resubmit paperwork for an authorization for a hiatal hernia repair. My insurance didn’t approve the bypass revision so I may have to pay that portion of the surgery myself. I had already started my pre-op liquid diet so now that’s on hold for a few more weeks. I was so ready to have my surgery next Monday and now I just feel disappointed and frustrated. If I could afford to pay for the entire surgery, I would just to avoid the hoops I’m having to jump through to get this approved. I could use some words of encouragement right about now. 😢 -
I was exactly the same. Didn't want to go out, turned down invitations and didn't want to go to events with my partner because I was embarrassed and didn't want people to think "why is he with that fat woman?" (my partner is skinny and always has been). I promise you that all that changes as the weight comes off! I'm now keen to go out, be seen out with him, and I have so much energy I've taken on a second job that's physical that I would never have wanted to do when I was big. It all just gets better and better, week by week.

This is what I am striving for! I was so miserable, no energy, didn't want to do anything. I am still a little unenergetic 6 weeks out, but I'm improving each day.

Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake
I♡BypassedMyPhatAss♡ replied to KevinS62's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am right at two weeks post op, and during the liquids phase my paperwork says nothing about calorie goals. My goals are 60 - 90 grams of protein and 64 ounces of liquids. Liquids for me is three, long weeks. Pureed and soft diet stages I have a calorie goal of 650 - 800 calories. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase. Full bariatric diet has a calorie goal of 1000 calories for the first six months and 1200 calories from six months onward. Protein and liquid goals are the same as the liquid phase still. Hope this helps. -
Sleeve Post-Op Calorie Intake
armartin98 replied to KevinS62's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Every doctor is different. I started soft foods at week 4. At week 6 I was told I could eat anything except fresh carrots and crunchy veggies. I try and stay at around 800-1000 calories a day. I have a slow metabolism and I'm older so I lose slower than some people. Also make sure you get your protein in. Good luck to you. -
Terrible pain in the recital area - 28 days post
SkinnyMingo1408 replied to Supafly82's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I think when I start introducing more fiber into my diet by way of complex carbs I'll be able to trade off and lessen the "helpers". I'm only 6 weeks out and can start introducing different solids on Thursday. Honestly I'm going to avoid pasta, bread, rice etc. Cause they will be my undoing and I fear dumping and going back. I will be introducing more veggies though and that should help with moving things along more naturally. There are worse things to have to do. -

Thank you so much for your guidance. I hope we don’t have to do this for the rest of our life? I’m this is just the first couple or three months or so? Thank you. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk -
Doubting Whether I Should Proceed
ThinIce replied to djhobbes's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I was in a similar situation to you. Amazed that I was finally able to lose some weight on the pre op diet when I always failed in the past. In my moments of doubt I would think "I don't need this surgery, I've proved to myself I can do this on my own" My next thought - "and if I cancel we can go out to eat as a reward and I can have anything I want." Bingo. Proof in point. I did need this surgery to break this cycle and get healthy again. I'm so very happy I didn't cancel. I'm only 3 1/2 weeks out at this point so I don't have a lot of historical experience, but I would do it again in a heartbeat. It was worth every gross meal replacement shake and even that bottle of mag citrate. One difference from your situation is that I don't have a family member trying to talk me down. That's probably because I didn't tell them. -
I am sure this question has been asked before, but I didn't see it. I am looking for how many calories we should be taking in during the early post-op timeframe after being sleeved. From the handouts I got from the dietician, it says I should be shooting for 1,000 calories a day, but it didn't say when I should start. I am in week 3 post-op and was talking to a friend this weekend that had the sleeve a few years ago. He could tell I'm confused and a bit frustrated. He thinks I'm starving myself and should eat more if my stomach is ready for it. Here's some numbers: - Week 1 post-op, I was on clear liquids. I probably took in about 400 calories a day and lost 12 1/2 pounds. - Week 2 post-op I was on full fluids, I took in about 500-600 calories a day and lost another 5 1/2 pounds. - Four days into Week 3 and still mostly full fluids. I am taking in about 600-700 calories a day and have only lost 1 pound in the last 4 days. So. I really am confused at this point. Should I up my calories some and stop starving myself? Or am I just over thinking this?

I’m so jealous of those who have only a couple of weeks/days until surgery. I wish I was there. I have probably another 6 months. 😵💫

My surgery coincided with us moving to another state, so there was too many pieces moving, we got another pet, had to get used to new routines, different weather, meeting people. My husband is very confident which I find very sexy. I do not anticipate problems in our relationship ( but I think people who had problems in their relationships may not be expecting them so who knows) he liked me thin, then he liked me fat, and I think he likes me thin(ish) again. Food is being difficult to implement into a routine where we both feel good, I am wasting a lot of food. I have a new addiction, I am buying clothes online, and the excuse of "nothing fits anymore" has stopped working weeks ago, I know I have to stop, but there are too many new options now that were not available to me for years, he has been patient but I can see that it can get bad very fast, I find myself browsing web stores at 2:AM because I am bored, in the past, that would be the equivalent to a Doritos bag in the middle of the night. my poor credit card is scared of me.

That's right around where I was post operatively and then I had a stall that I think lasted for ten days and was probably the most annoying thing to happen to me. Everyone loses weight differently. Shows like My 600 Lb Life skewered my weight loss perceptions because I wasn't losing as quickly as they were; but I was never that big, either. A few things my surgeon's office told me: Make sure you're getting enough water-if a body is dehydrated, it will slow weight loss. Are you hitting your protein goals? When I'm not eating 70-80 g of protein a day, my weight loss slows down. Vary the pace of the walk-walk slow, followed by some speed walking, followed by walking at a normal pace. Also adding in things like hills can help as well.

Eating carbs (pasta, rice, or bread )
sprukop0924 replied to New_me_2022's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I never stopped eating carbs, but they are very limited. My program allows whole grain breads, pasta and crackers. I have also been eating a little brown rice. But, we camp alot with my siblings, cousins and grandchildren and have group meals. I basically eat whatever everyone else eats, but put emphasis on the protein and try to eat anything else sparingly. My stomach size and reduced appetite has successfully kept me from over-eating, I feel. But, for the most part, I try to be make healthier options for day-to-day. For lunch today I will have a flavored tuna pack on 5-6 whole wheat crackers. I won't be able to eat the entire pouch. I'm 62 yoa and I go to the gym 4-5 days per week. I am 11 weeks post-surgery and am down 45 lbs. I feel this is working well for me and I don't feel like I'm dieting. This will be my new normal. I see my surgeon and nutritionist next Monday for the last time and will update if they tell me different! -
Don't feel bad it will come off. I loss 15 lbs my first 3 weeks out. I started at 264 and was 249 at 3 weeks and I lost nothing before surgery.

Milk and Yogurt pre op diet
liveaboard15 replied to fed-up's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
i keep hearing about this method of pre op diet typically from people in the UK. It works i guess. For most here in the USA we do protein drinks several times a day for a certain amount of weeks (I did two weeks) -

Marriage changes post op
Sunshine Princess replied to KimA-GA's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I'm just shy of three months post op but I feel this changed my marriage for the better. Before, I was just so tired and achy and I didnt want to do anything. Because I didnt do anything or exercise, I was always moody and withdrawn. My husband and I had nearly stopped communicating because I would take things the wrong way and would then smoke pot and eat to make myself feel better. After surgery? It's been different. My energy level is as high as its ever been so I'm doing more around the house. We're actively talking and sharing things again. We're making plans to do things we used to enjoy like go to water parks, concerts, ball games, kayaking etc, and it's brought his energy levels up. I cook a basic protein and vegetable for dinner and he adds to it depending on what he wants-like rice, potatoes, pasta etc. We tend to sit and talk during meals. I think he feels like he has his spouse back so it's been an improvement all around. -
College Student - Gastric Bypass during semester?
NickFW replied to Overt28's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
It depends on how important education is to you right now. More precisely academic performance and how you will learn new material. In the first week, in any case, you will not be able to study full time and your performance will be reduced. When I was at school and had an operation, the semester in terms of academic performance was much worse. -
(Sorry for all the questions.. as my possible surgery date comes up my mind keeps thinking of new and interesting worries) Married people post surgery: what changes to your relationship did you experience ? how did your spouse adapt to change to that comes with weight loss or well, did he/she not adapt? I know that my husband will be there 100% right before and immediately after surgery. Unfortunately, a week or two out I don’t know how he will be (he will be “done” with it and wanting to “go back to normal” which won’t be possible.) and I really don’t know how he will cope when hopefully my confidence continues to grow and my self esteem continues to grow after surgery. wanted to hear some good, bad and ugly from people who have been there with marriages through this surgical process.

Vitamin suggestions liquids are awful [emoji20]
kcuster83 replied to Blue432's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Liquid and chewable are all horrible. I could not deal with it. I worked with my team and they luckily cleared me to take the capsules at my 2 week follow up as long as I could handle them. Luckily I could. "Celebrate" has a drink mix, the raspberry lemonade is not horrible but I still couldn't drink it even when adding extra water to thin it out. They all just have a horrible aftertaste to me, I can't get past it. Speaking of which, I have random stuff that I don't use and would love to just give to someone if they want to try it. I have these in single serve packs. I also have the same brand "4 in 1" chocolate shakes. I open bucket and i unopened bucket. Both approved by my team to use post op. -
12 lbs in three weeks at your starting weight is normal. Unless someone is the size of the people on "My 600 lb Life", they usually lose somewhere in the 15-25 lb range that first month post-surgery. Yes - you'll sometimes find people who lose more or less than that range, but they're outliers. I lost 16 lbs the first month post-op (not sure where I was at the three week mark since it's been over seven years, but I was probably exactly where you are - about 12 lbs down), and I ended up losing 100% of my excess weight - over 200 lbs. if you stick to your program, you WILL lose the weight, whether fast or slow. In the end, your level of commitment to your program is what determines your success, not your rate of weight loss.

Food intolerance after wls
ShoppGirl replied to fourmonthspreop's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I admit I still haven’t tried anything deep fried so I am not sure about that but pretty much anything I makes at home before surgery I can tolorate after. The only thing I just don’t seem to enjoy the taste of afterwards is this southwest ranch seasoning packet I used to use to make chicken tacos. I used to love it and now it’s just blah. On the other hand I used to make myself eat fish once a week and now I actually enjoy it a little more. Still mild fish like mahi and snapper but it’s a taste change for me. -
What do you do instead of eating?!
SkinnyMingo1408 replied to Lornapc's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I'm 6 weeks out to. I don't really feel hungry too often but I've got myself on a schedule for breakfast, lunch and dinner. My body knows when food is coming. If I feel like eating between meals I ask myself why and typically it's boredom and/or old habits trying to creep back in. Have to keep that door slammed shut. As someone said earlier if you do stumble don't focus on that, focus on getting up, dusting off and getting back on your plan. Therapy may help you recognize better when your legit hungry and when emotions are wanting to be stuffed. It will also help you recognize the emotions, face them and allow yourself to leave the negative behind, refocus your energy and discover what you like to do. I did pottery before but I'm finding myself more patient with it then before. I hand build and my pieces are more successful. I've also gotten more into self-care. I'm keeping my legs shaved, exercising more, goodness my 16 year old is giving me makeup tips! I used to not wear any at all but I find I'm more confidant with it. Only it's been 10+ years so I ask her if she could advise me. It been something thats drawn us closer. My youngest (12f) does the switch boxing game with me. We workout together and get some good laughs at our efforts. Once school starts I only have 1 free evening a week! I'm volunteering with my high schools band (my daughter is in it and I work there) 2-3 times a week, I have pottery 1 time a week and then miscellaneous things the other 3. Now is the time to try new things. Things you haven't done in a long time because you were too big or things you always wanted to try but your size helped you back. Carpe diem! Seize the day! You got this! -
Best tips for preparation?
Hop_Scotch replied to Gucci73's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I live by myself and travelled for surgery. So I made sure before I left that I had some things at home that would do for the immediate post op phases so I wouldn't have to rely on anyone to do errands etc. I reviewed the guidelines provided to me by my surgeon's dietician and took a chance on what I thought I would be able to tolerate afer surgery and made sure I had that at home. What I hadn't planned on was covid. I missed a deadline to arrive back home in my home state and then had to quarantine for two weeks (back in March 2020). Thankfully I had a friend who was happy to do a shop run for some additional supplies. So have a contigency plan in case you need it. You will likely experience some pain and / or discomfort. If you know your pain / discomfort tolerance levels make sure you have supplies of the medications that will help as well as other things. Some people find that heat pads help with stomach cramps for instance. Read and re read your post op guidelines, don't be afraid to ask questions of your dietician or surgeon. Ask questions in these forums if you need to but do be mindful that your guidelines should likely take precedence in the immediate / initial phases until at least two or three months.
