I need to vent/psych question
KarenSt replied to ladymare's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yeah, I was a little shocked. I went to a guy that was an hour from home in a small rural NC tone because he was in-network for my insurance so I guess I shouldn't have been too surprised. At least he cut me loose rather than try to convert me or tell me I am headed to hell. I have to be grateful for that -
Have you spoke to your dr about this? Have you had a fill? If so you need to call and schedule another one... Everybody is different. Keep doing what you're doing as far as exercising it'll start back coming off.. and I think the 5 day pouch test is a good idea.. go back on full liquids and see what happens, I had my first fill on the 15th of June, and the dr put me back on liquids, then mushies... The first 4 days of liquids I lost 5 lbs,, but I must admit, I thought I was going to die, becasue I was soooo hungry,, Aw man, I thought I wouldn't make it....you can do it.. don't give up.. I'm on my first full day of mushies, probably want loose any, but don't give up.. Be encouraged you can do it...this website really helps me a lot and encourages me.. Thanks to all the bandsters...

when to incorporate strength training post-op
loveprayserve replied to theosmom's topic in Fitness & Exercise
According to my doctor, lose skin has to do with age and genetics. However, strength training is good to "help" with the matter, if you will. My surgeon gave me the green light to start at the next week (it will be 3 weeks). I am 29, and had no complications at all, however, so that may be why. Just do what the surgeon says...it could be different for everybody:) -
One Thing Ill Never Forget About Post Op.
Wisegirl1 replied to SusieSunshine's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, caught a bacteria infection at the port site but under the skin so there was nothing I could do. I got my 1st fill today and realized there was still some drainage but the dr said that will dry up on it's own. -
I really need help deciding!
ParrotheadCathy replied to skinnydesires's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
I first contemplated bypass surgery. In the end, the decision maker for me was the complications rate. Bypass surgery has a 10% complications rate that includes some serious complications like malnutrition and death. The lap band has only .01% complication rate and those complications are usually fairly minor (slippage, which can sometimes be corrected by going back to a liquid diet, for example). Then, the recovery rate for bypass is a couple of weeks at best and can take longer. Lap band is nothing near that. While you may be tender, experience gas, etc., you can return to your normal life within days. I had surgery on Tuesday and went back to work on Friday -- yes, I have a sit-down job, but I'm betting you probably do too. With bypass, eating sweets can trigger dumping syndrome, which I hear can be pretty awful. I ate a bite of birthday cake yesterday, frosting and all, and it didn't make a bit of difference. And one other thing is that lap band is aiming for 1-2 pounds per week weight loss, which isn't crzy fast and is less likely to leave you with a lot of loose skin; not so for bypass surgery. So now you know what helped me make my decision. -
Hi, I’m looking for advice. I weigh 11 stone 11 pounds and I’m booked in to have gastric band surgery in less than a week. As it gets nearer to the time I’m starting to have second thoughts. I have been trying to loose weigh all my life but I just can’t. I know I’m now very overweight but I really want to loose 3 stone. Am I crazy to do this?? I’d love some advice because I’m feeling very nervous. Thank you in advance

I have tried everything in the book since I was 8 years old to loose weight. Now at 34 I am 235 pounds and have made the decision to get banded. I come from a family where hitting 300 lbs as a woman is not rare, and that scares me to death. I have my surgical consult next week and will hopefully have my surgery near the middle of May. Each and every post here has made my decision an easier one. Yes I am scared and worried, but to hear how so many people have responded so well to the procedures makes me feel better. I am newly separated and have twin 5 year olds, so the cost is going to hurt. However, I want to run around with my kids and enjoy every minute with them. Right now mommy comes home from work and naps on the couch while they watch tv or play on the computer. That's no life for them or me! But to be totally honest, I also want this for ME. I am embarking on a new life and this body just doesn't fit the person I am hoping to be - happy, confident, energized, attractive. Yay for those of you have made the decison and yay for us who are right behind you!

Did anyone else experience this on liquid diet?
LoveAlwaysKia posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi all. I am on day 5 of my pre-op liquids and I am having loose stools. Is that due to all of the liquid I am taking in? Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App -

Question for Dr. J.Lo Neck lift
Dr.JLo replied to shortgal's topic in Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery
Hi, tightening the muscles is called a platysmaplasty, and that is done if it's needed (like everything else in PS!). Sometimes the issue is excess skin, sometimes its excess fat, or excess muscle laxity...or a combination. I tailor the procedure to correct the problem issues. I usually do the face very last..after the body work...as changes in wieght (i.e. loss) after the body procedures is common and it will really show on the face. -
New and different case
Tiffykins replied to JillianMarie's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
As long as you acknowledge that not every sleeve patient loses their hunger, and you find a doctor that within his ethics would perform this surgery, then I wish nothing but the best for you. I still believe that no surgery will cure this compulsive eating, and habits that you seem to want to minimize because you've tried counseling and it didn't work, counseling doesn't cure the disorder, but it gives you coping skills/mechanisms that you can overcome some of the compulsive behavior. I think my biggest concern is that some people do struggle with maintenance. I am one of those people unfortunately. Since you only 30lbs to lose, if you were to lose 60 would you then technically be underweight? I'm not underweight, but I have bones protruding including my ribs, backbones, shoulderblades, wrists and ankles are nothing but bone/skin. It is not something that I recommend anyone having to go through when they slip down into the "too small" zone. It's emotionally and mentally exhausting. I understand being proactive, but I honestly can not imagine having 85% of my stomach removed to lose 30lbs with zero guarantee that I would lose my hunger. Yes, I am one of the fortunate ones that has lost their hunger, but if you stick around, or do more research, you'll find others do not lose it. Also, mentally, the sleeve definitely does not resolve head hunger at all. I'm not trying to discourage you completely, but I think it's only fair that you have a full "eyes wide open" of this surgery, and life post op. It's not easy, it's not a quick fix. Even though you state that you don't want to eat junk food, or suck down a milkshake, unfortunately, you can not predict your behavior until you are faced with the fact that you can not consume 6lbs of broccoli to soothe the hunger, or compulsive desire. If counseling, dieting, and other attempts haven't stopped you from doing this, you could very well find a way to continue this learned behavior with the sleeve. -

I have a horrible amount of hanging skin on my tummy, so I'm beginning to look for a plastic surgeon to do a panniculectomy. Do any of you have any recommendations for plastic surgeons near Detroit?
-
I had lapband surgery and it's definitely worked for me. I'm not saying that bypass or sleeving doesn't work, but I didn't have those surgeries so can only comment on the surgery I have had. I went from 215lbs to 154lbs in just over 7 months with regular exercise (40mins stationary cycling on a spin bike 3 times a week) and eating well (in that I cut out stuff like sugar, chocolates, cola etc, but still ate a balance of Protein, carbs and veg). When I got to goal, I had a lower body lift to remove my loose skin, and lost about 7lbs as a result. Since then, I have continued to slowly lose weight despite not exercising much anymore and eating 'normally' (meaning if I feel like chocolate, I eat it). My band still restricts how much food I eat, I'm very rarely hungry, and I get full fast. And at the moment, it's the band alone that is still seeing me lose weight, albeit very very slowly now. I'm now down to 135lbs. I don't need or want to lose anymore, so have been trying to eat more and that's a nice change from the last 20 years of my life! So yes the band works. I lost over 100% of my excess weight with exercise and good food habits (and that was the hardest part), but keeping it off is proving easy so far.

Hi All, So I have been hearing both on VST and on TV news segments that people are loosing over 100lbs in 6 months after surgery. I am concern that I have not been losing as well as I could. Let me say that it will be a year December 10th I have lost 80+ pounds, which is great and it shows but I am thinking that I need to go back and replace some meals with protein shakes and cut back on some things. What is your take? Any recommendations? Thanks! we11ro

Not allowed to lose or gain pre-op?
ProudGrammy replied to SouthernPhoenix's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
@SouthernPhoenix WELCOME WELCOME WELCOME can't tell if insurance has already approved you if (hopefully) they have - your starting BMI is what counts for insurance - if you loose more weight now it won't effect anything - the insurance refers to the first #s given by the dr (ie 40.6 and startingweight If you have NOT been approved yet, your right, you must maintain 40.6, if you go below that # you might not qualify since you have no commorbities check everything out - one way or the other i'm sure you'll figure things out, and all will be fine with the world☺️ August here you come!!!! good luck bud kathy -
I was taking as much as 80 ml of Lantus every night, plus oral meds during the day....the more I lost, the lower readings got, the less Lantus I took...pretty soon non e at all, and then no more oral meds...all my blood levels are good with no meds. Just plenty of exercise and good food choices. There is a direct correlation between diabetes and body fat%....the more fat you loose, the less resistant you become. Least that is what I've been told. For me, it was never about loosing weight, exactly, but loosing fat was always my #1 priority.... If you go by BMI's I am still overweight.....but I have a very low body fat %.... Look at athletes...you would not call them fat, yet their weight can be high.

I saw my surgeon today and we have come to the conclusion that my sudden case of the "stucks" is primarely because of my stress levels...Yes...Just when you think that your life is normal enough to jump back in....a heeping steaming pile goes floating by. Without getting into tooooo much detail I had a situation arise the other night that was HORRIABLE....Cops were called....cops had guns out....I was up against a wall waiting to be identified.....then I had a MAJOR meltdown on a sidewalk. The issue is ongoing and will be ongoing for a while.....Im not in any legal trouble, but its still an issue that Im going to be involved in for a long time. Soooo because of the stress of my marital situation and now this...the restriction levels are going WAY up. My surgeon and I are going to baby the hell out of my band rather than take fluids out...He thinks by taking out the fluid I will start to feel more hungry and start to stress eat a lot more, gainning back the weight. I lost 2.5 pounds since my last visit...which was awesome. I made it thru Thanksgiving without gainning. Sooo I know what I must do and that is baby this thing till the stress level comes down. I have not had any acid reflux so that is a major bonus....and I am still loosing weight. I got the impression that my dr wasn't worried about erosion...soooo if hes cool with it....Im cool with it. I totally trust him. I was completely honest with him....and he just wants me to do shakes when the stress levels are up...some salads and fish. He said fish goes thru easier than chicken...sooo Now I am dying for fish, and I dont know how to cook...so I gotta find a resturant with good fish dinners. Thanks for listening~ Talk to you soon~

linesj, You sound like ME writing this post. My thoughts exactly. And even down to the not communicating much w/ husband - because you get along better that way. Oh my, very true! While fortunately for me, my husband is supportive, we talk very little about it. (And generally, the less we talk, the better we get along -- some relationships are like that!) While he is supportive of my doing this -- he (and my daughters) also wants food in the house like chips, sweets, etc...so I can do this, but will still need to have the stuff around, which is hard. Which is why I need the band! Re: weight watchers. A bunch of women from my office have joined weight watchers, and all they talk about is how many points for this, how many points for that - - actually, it drives me nuts. And they've all done this before. Yes, they will loose a little weight, but will it stiay off forever? Probably not, since they've all done this before. I, like you, have come to realize that restrictive surgery will be my tool because it will hep me make those life-long changes. I can't just decide one day to eat tons of food if it won't fit anymore! It will help me stick to the food plan long-term, not just for a few months before I give up. At least that's what I'm hoping for... Good luck getting your approval!

Dr. JLo- First of all, I admire your work that I have seen on Big Medicine. I am such a fan! I have carried twins for 38 weeks (6.4 lbs. each), 19 months later had another c-section, all while having a pre pragnancy weight of 245. Needless to say I have quite an "apron". I feel comfortable with the way the rest of my body is shaping up through exercise. Okay so maybe I want some implants too. I have told myself that I wanted to be 170 before seeking out a PS. I am 5"5" and in a 18 (because I have to tuck in my stomach in my pants). The rest of me looks like a normal person now. It is hard to feel good about this much weightloss when I see that apron everytime I look in the mirror. How much weight in skin can be removed during a TT. When should I seek out a PS in your opinion? Can you recommend someone in DFW for a self pay? Thank you so much!

Well, not really sure how to feel about this

Hi! My name is Tonya and I have been on this roller coaster of by-pass... band... self... no, okay by-pass, wait band... okay Weight Watchers (again) for over a year now! My BFF (that sounds so high school-ish, lol) had RNY in October 2006 and I said I would wait and see how she did. Well, she lost 130 lbs and looks great except for the thin, brittle hair and the pale skin tone. I guess that I can live with... but she is always freezing because her Iron is too low and can't get regulated and she is constantly sick due to low immunity. So... I had decided a while back that the Lab Band was the better choice for me. I had my surgical consult in August 2007 and started a new job two weeks later -- so my insurance changed and I've had to put it off until now. I have an appointment with the nutritionist on Monday! THANK GOODNESS... but now I am feeling the terror again! What if I'm denied, what if I fail, what if I hate my life because I can't eat what I want OR because I am always sick or having band issues!?!?!?!?!?!? What if, what if, what if!! PLUS, I was told I'd have to loose about 50 pounds :cool2: to even get the band due to my BMI - HOW AM I GONNA DO THAT?!?!?!?!?! Anyone who can share anything to help calm my nerves... I would greatly appreciate it!!
