Gastric bypass july28,20
loridee11 replied to ms.latoyahaynes37@gmail.com's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I had bypass on 12/31. I was SO nervous the morning of surgery but overall I had a pretty easy recovery. I made a commitment to myself before going in to the hospital that any time they asked I would walk (and I would ask to walk if they didn't ask at least every 2 hours). I think that really helped keep the gas pains down and set me up for an easier recovery. They had me drinking water & crystal light and eating SF Jello in the hospital (maybe 2 tiny bites is all I could get in with the swelling) and they had me taking my vitamins the next day (I triple checked since that seemed crazy but I had no issues). My program also had us on modified liquids from day 2, so I had a tiny bit of greek yogurt my first day home and it was fine. I took tiny bites, and waited to see how I felt between bites. It's crazy how quickly you get full but makes sense when you think about the size of your new stomach and the swelling. I always had water by my side and sipped pretty much every 10 mins (aside from 30 mins after eating). The first week I walked around the house 5 or 6 times a day and then I moved outside and quickly got up to a mile (I still try to do around 2 most days). I was definitely tired and fatigued the first month or so, but after the first day home I didn't need to nap or anything else - just took it easy aside from my walking. Congratulations and good luck! -

Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve
WishMeSmaller replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had GERD and a hiatal hernia for about 15 years. When I started to think about weight loss surgery and do my research, I decided gastric bypass with hiatal hernia repair was the right choice for me. I know I am not a revision like you, but I decided getting rid of GERD forever, and not taking the chance of having to revise later, was very important to me. I am almost 3 weeks post op now. The first two weeks I had a bit of regurgitation, but that has gone away. I will continue my proton pump inhibitors for another month or so while I finish healing per the recommendation of my surgeon and then get to drop them from my meds. Yay! My recovery has not been perfect. I have had three separate incidents of vomiting, likely due to the hernia repair, but I was able to go back to work full time last Monday after two weeks off. I actually feel great and have plenty of energy. I have not tried to eat anything with processed sugars yet, just some fruit, so no dumping at this point. I am glad to have the potential for dumping as a deterrent to eating processed sugars. I do plan to try a small piece of dark chocolate soon, just to settle that craving. At some point I will try a glass of dry white or red wine too, but it is still too soon in my healing process. I hope you come to a decision that is right for you. Consider what you are willing to tolerate in the future. Possible dumping vs. possible GERD and another revision. Best thoughts coming out to you! -

Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve
Barbwired replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Thanks Rhonda, so sorry to hear about the tough time you're having. I started out dead set against getting the bypass, but now I'm second guessing everything and thinking that's the route I might go. I can't bear the thought of spending my life having to sleep in a chair because of my GERD. I don't think people who have never had it understand how bad it is at all. I'm meeting with my surgeon on Tuesday and have a lot of questions for him. Good luck to you, I hope things get better for you! -

Revision from sleeve to RNY
Tracyringo replied to CandyMel's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I had awful pain but was also walking first day. There are people that lose weight with 2nd surgery but I hear it is harder. I lost 12lbs first month and 2 lbs this 2nd month but all that did was put me back where I was last summer. I really dont think I will lose anymore but we will see. My revision was 5/22. -
I am so scared! Is this normal?
Camella posted a topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I'm scheduled to have a revision from a sleeve to a mini gastric bypass in 5 weeks. I am way more scared than the first surgery. I think in part because I know what to expect post op (I had an awful recovery last time). Has anyone else felt like this before their revision? -
Gastric Band Revision To Sleeve
Rhonda H replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I am 56, and eight weeks out (would have been 16 if not for Covid-caused cancellations) on my revision from a lapband to a sleeve (plus a hiatal hernia repair). My surgery went fine, weirdest thing was not being able to have someone with me. I woke up super nauseated , I mean bad, so bad, but it was much better overall after 24 hours. The first few days were rocky - bad reaction to the oxycodone, the scopolamine patch tanked my blood pressure, but very little discomfort from the procedures. The big problem was that my GERD was still present, maybe even worse. I get it badly - my chest, back, neck and stomach feel like they’re on fire. I was shocked when my surgeon’s assistant told me that the sleeve was a GERD-inducing surgery, and if it did not subside after a few weeks a revision to a bypass would be the next step. At that point - and now- I’m like NO more surgery, ever! I honestly don’t know why this was never discussed, or that I didn’t discover it during my pre-research. No explanation. Fortunately, the GERD did almost completely subside, and I was rolling on smoothly (Although, I am able to eat more food and quicker than I should be able to...but still I’ve lost 21 pounds.) Overall, doing good, but I also realized surgery does not take away an eating addiction so I am getting a therapist to help me with that and feel confident about improvement. However!!! Yesterday I started getting slightly nauseated and a little heartburn which has exploded into full on mouth watering nausea and some of the worst GERD I’ve ever had. Carafate, protonix, dexilant and a ton of Tums later, I am in pretty serious pain, and even drinking water makes me nauseated. I called the surgeon and he said at this stage that is probably from having food stuck in the small opening of my stomach. I hope he’s right but it’s just hard to imagine going from feeling great to feeling like I am on fire, and I haven’t eaten much in two days so I don’t know what food it would be. I’m very upset and worried right now because there’s no possible way I can live decently like this, but another bariatric surgery is just absolutely out of the question. I know this is really just a recount of my experience and not so much an answer to your question. If you would have asked me two days ago, I would have strongly recommended the revision but if how I’m feeling now is how it’s going to be, no way. Of course, I’m hoping tomorrow I’m just miraculously better. I think the really important thing is just to discuss thoroughly and completely the GERD situation with your surgeon......Best of luck to you! -
Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?

I only wish I did it 10 years sooner... It has been amazing... Maybe I was unique but I had no Hunger it cravings for months.. I lost weight quickly and consistently with maybe 1 week stall the whole time.. I lost all my excess weight and it only took about 9 months and I've been in maintenance now for over 2.5 months without gaining even though I eat more now than I did in the beginning... I feel the bypass has changed my metabolism and I can eat like a skinny fit person without gaining anything... I've had no complications at all, yes dumping does make you feel sick but you learn what foods will make you feel that way and then try to avoid them.. my BMI is 22.2 and I'm fit and healthy for the first time in 20 years Don't be scared 1000s of people have the bypass every year... -

Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?
JRT Mom replied to Barbwired's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
Barbwired--I am one of the lap banders who had to get mine removed when it slipped and caused a huge hiatal hernia. I got it removed, got the hernia repaired and a revision to a RNY bypass in one surgery. I couldn't be happier with the results! No more vomiting and sliming every other meal. And in seven months I lost all the weight I had regained and thirty pounds more than the lowest I ever got with the band. My only regret is that I ever got the band in the first place and wasted 12 years before doing what I should have initially. I haven't dumped once, but I'm very careful not to eat anything that could cause me to dump. It's good incentive not to eat too much sugar! The bypass encourages more of a total revision of how you eat than the band does...I discovered quickly about "slider foods" with the band but an much more discerning with what I eat after the bypass. And I'd guess you can still enjoy a glass of wine now and then but would stick to a dry wine rather than a sweet one. I'm just not much of a drinker so I haven't tried it yet. Whatever you decide good luck! -

I am going to speak of what I know about my very best friend that just had a lapband revision to RNY last year. She described having the same or similar Lapland issues as you mentioned. Acid reflux definitely being the worst. Every time we went out to eat she ended up excusing herself to the bathroom because of the reflux. Elevated sleep, etc. I believe she also took a daily acid reflux medication. Now, after the revision to RNY, she claims she had no idea how much more pleasant life could be. She has had a few dumping incidents and I have asked her all about it because I'm about to have the RNY in a few weeks. She claims she would choose the rare dumping incidents over the daily misery she had with the band any day of the week. Again, these are just my observations and conversations with someone else that went through it. Front the outside looking in I have seen a drastic change in her life. I wish you well on your road to a decision! -
Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?

you already know this (since I responded to your other post), but I'm very happy with my bypass and would make the same choice again. (P.S. I've never dumped) -
I made the choice not to mention this to others. I avoided the negative feedback. I am doing the bypass for my health and live a healthier lifestyle with this bypass as a tool to help me. I tested this out by saying, what do you think of my friend who is going to have a bypass to help her lose weight for her health? All the response was negative.

ASMBS Statement on Resumption of Surgery Released
Alex Brecher posted a topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) calls for safe resumption of bariatric and metabolic surgery before COVID-19 pandemic is declared over Newberry, Fla. — Jun. 23, 2020 — The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), the leading organization of bariatric surgeons and integrated health professionals in the nation, declared metabolic and bariatric surgery "medically necessary and the best treatment for those with the life-threatening and life-limiting disease of severe obesity" and called for the safe and rapid resumption of procedures, which have been largely postponed along with other surgeries deemed elective amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In a new position statement entitled, "Safer Through Surgery," published online in the journal SOARD, the ASMBS strongly rejects classifying metabolic and bariatric surgery as "elective" and prefers the use of the term "Medically Necessary Time-Sensitive Surgery" or "Medically Necessary Non-Emergent Surgery" to better characterize the effectiveness of the intervention and the progressive nature of the many diseases it treats including obesity, type 2 diabetes, hypertension and heart disease. "COVID-19 may be a factor for quite some time and the longer the treatment of obesity, type 2 diabetes and other related diseases are postponed, the greater the chance they will become worse," said Matthew M. Hutter, MD, MPH, president of the ASMBS and professor of surgery at Harvard Medical School. "Each state, doctor and patient must make a decision as to when conditions for metabolic and bariatric surgery are right, but the sooner it can be safely performed, the more quickly obesity, type 2 diabetes and other diseases can be reduced or resolved." The ASMBS recommends that the precise timing for surgery be carefully considered based on factors including an individual patient’s health status, local prevalence of COVID-19 and the availability of resources including hospital beds, ventilators and personal protective equipment (PPE). The ASMBS statement concludes, "Before COVID-19 began, it was clear that patients with obesity were ‘safer through surgery’. In the era of COVID-19, ‘safer through surgery’ for patients with obesity may prove to be even more important than before." Obesity has been identified as an independent risk factor for adverse outcomes including death among COVID-19 patients. Metabolic/bariatric surgery has been shown to be the most effective and long-lasting treatment for severe obesity. 1 Its safety profile is comparable to some of the safest and most commonly performed surgeries in the U.S. including gallbladder surgery, appendectomy and knee replacement. 2 An estimated 252,000 bariatric surgeries were performed in the United States in 2018, which is approximately less than 1 percent of the population eligible for surgery based on BMI. 3 The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports 42.4 percent of Americans had obesity in 2017-2018. 4 Obesity has been linked to more than 40 diseases including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis and at least 13 different types of cancer. 5,6,7 About the ASMBS The ASMBS is the largest organization for bariatric surgeons in the nation. It is a non-profit organization that works to advance the art and science of bariatric surgery and is committed to educating medical professionals and the lay public about bariatric surgery as an option for the treatment of severe obesity, as well as the associated risks and benefits. It encourages its members to investigate and discover new advances in bariatric surgery, while maintaining a steady exchange of experiences and ideas that may lead to improved surgical outcomes for patients with severe obesity. So I had the DS a week ago today, due to some weight regain 5 years out from VSG. I have been searching and searching for ppl's experience revising from VSG to DS. I want to hear from you!! I know my weight loss will be slower than with virgin DS, but I guess I'm lacking Faith that I can lose at all, just relying on malabsorption. I am watching what I'm eating (portions and carbs) . Please share with me your experience and loss! And how long was your belly sore? I'm still pretty sore, with the vsg I was back to normal in a couple days. Not so with DS!! -
Gastric Bypass Peeps: Would you do it again?
Barbwired posted a topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
I really need your help. I got a lapband in 2010. It was the greatest thing that ever happened to me, I lost 100 pounds and life was good. Then the acid reflux started. It was hell on earth. I woke up chocking in the middle of the night and spent several months sleeping in a chair. They finally had to take all of the fluid out of my band and the reflux is better but not totally gone. I don't have to sleep in a chair now at least, but without the fluid in my band and my gym closing (I was going 5-6 days a week) I've put on 40 pounds and I'm miserable. I had been on track to convert to a sleeve, but now I'm on here reading about people with the sleeve still having reflux problems. I can't go through that again so might consider a bypass instead but it terrifies me. I'm so afraid of the whole dumping syndrome thing and I like a glass of wine occasionally and I'm afraid I'll never be able to do that again. I would love to hear from all and any of you who have had a bypass and if you're happy about it or not. I'm beside myself trying make this decision and I would really appreciate any advice any of you can give me. Thank you so much in advance. -

Re-sleeve to Bypas
JRT Mom replied to Rocky4521's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
I think the weight loss after revision has a lot to do with whether or not you gained weight and how much. If you didn't, there won't be much loss, but if you did, you should lose as much as you did after the first procedure. It might come off a bit more slowly, but you should eventually lose the excess weight. -
Re-sleeve to Bypas
Rocky4521 replied to Rocky4521's topic in Revision Weight Loss Surgery Forums (NEW!)
Yes thanks catwoman7 it is due to my severe GERD. Was giving the advice from my surgeon to have it done back in 2017 and I decided to wait keep doing meds and big lifestyle changes and unfortunately no relief if anything only worse. Definitely know the food choices and calorie intake are important. Also was told the weight loss is very low after the revision but not from personal experience.
