Got a date sooner than I expected...now I'm panicking
Christinamo7 replied to mollydeez's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was on pause for SO LONG due to another medical condition that when I finally got my date it was just a couple of weeks away also! I actually had to take a second date a few days later, just to feel like I could get all my ducks in a row. I understand all the emotions flying around you! thankfully I did not have a two week diet ahead of time, just the normal fasting the night before surgery and bowel clean out. all I can say looking back is it was completely worth it. I look forward to seeing your success. -

I had a 2 week pre-op diet with 2 shakes a day and a small meal with 3 oz lean Protein and vegetables prepared with no extra fat - lost 13 lbs during that 2 weeks and my surgeon loved my liver! LOL - Congrats on your date!!! -

I kept a notebook with me for about 4 weeks before I met with my surgeon and I would jot down questions as they came...when I finished I had about 50 questions! Lol...I thought he was gonna think I was crazy..but he took my notebook and answered every question...I felt very informed going into surgery...I even asked if he ever had a patient die and if he was ever part of a malpractice suite...yeah I asked! Lol...I told him I already knew cuz I had googled him! Lol...feel free to PM with any questions..best wishes to you -

I Have a Surgery Date-October 20th!
Kya Wolf posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I got my call today and i am scheduled for Oct 20th! So excited and scared and excited, lol. Going for my Pre-Op Class Monday morning and meeting with MD and anesthesia on Wednesday. Turned in my request for time off and my boss immediately sent it back approved for 2 weeks and sent me papers to file for STD, in case i need it. OMG, 2 weeks! -
I know the last week before surgery I was ready to jump out of my skin! I think everyone in December (who really wants surgery) will be moving up because there are those who will postpone "until after the holidays". So with any luck, maybe you will be moved up again. How lucky you are not to have a pre-op diet--but I must tell you that it prepared me for post-op and the band's rules. Best wishes to you in your upcoming surgery!

There are so many variations on the pre-op diet from what to eat/drink to length of time (the post-op diet, as well). If you're unsure about what you are supposed to be doing pre-op, I agree with Cherish, you need to call your doctor. For instance, my pre-op was two weeks long, so I might have been given more leeway on what I was allowed to have versus someone with a shorter period of time.

I've been lurking around the boards for about 2 months now to gather information. I attended an informational in June and went for my surgical consult, psych, and nutrition information last week. I have an upper gi, ekg, and chest xray left. The good thing is I dont have any other issues going on Healthwise. My dr's office called today and gave me a surgery date of August 10th!!! I didnt even know i had insurance approval yet. Has anyone else had this happen?

Thanks for the inspiration!!! You and I are pretty comparable height and begining weight wise. My surgery will be Dec. 18th, and the main thing I'm looking forward to is having more energy, and not feeling overwhelmed physically when exercising. I used to run daily, and lift a few times a week, and can't wait to get back to it. Keep up the great work, and keep posting... it gives us rookies hope:-)

Lots Of Stress Eating Lately - Pre Surgery
PEvette replied to Looking Ahead's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Yes, if you dont stop the stress eatting you will gain weight! I was given my date back in Feburary, and I told myself I was going to lose at least 30 pounds between Feb and June....then stress crept up and bit me in the butt! My 5th Graders getting Spring Fever, trying to get and keep them focused for their state assessments, I got frustrated and said to heck with the Protein shakes, eating right and stuff, and started up my old habit of going to Mickey D's in the morning.... Well I stepped on the scale on May 20th (I have surgery in 3 weeks) and I'd gained 20 pounds! I started my pre-op on that day! Now I'm day 5 into it...I am approaching the wall (I getting the urge to eat) but I'm trying to stay focused.... I am the captain of this body and I will control it!! One day at a time!!! Commit to taking back control.... -
Hello James! I was banded on Aug. 22 and my hubby is going to be banded on Oct. 6. Is your wife going to be banded also? I am so glad my hubby is because we can support each other and understand it to the fullest. I didnt have to do a pre-op diet, so since my surgury 3 weeks ago today I have lost 20 pounds and have not had one problem. Good luck to the both of you!

New Here and so many questions!
Tori1983 replied to spoiltmom's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I Have United Health Care too. I went and saw Dr.Kim May 15th aprroved for sugery last week, liquid diet June 8th and Surgery June 29th. So, In just over a month I am getting everything done. I too am at 100%! My son has some issues and we usually have our max out of pocket/deductable met by march-april. So, I am paying nothing out of pocket except for my diet and post op meds. All fills and unfills are covered 100% I made the appt. They submited my paper work to the insurance and that week I heard back with my scheduled date. Good luck to you. -
Emotional Changes Post op.
May212013 replied to liteNsun's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I can say this.... YOU WILL BE EMOTIONAL! I am not sure if its the pain killers or hormones but it happens for a couple of days maybe about a week but then it calms down. Was hard for me to do a lot of what I was told to do as far as eating and drinking. I didn't and still don't like to eat! I feel better when I don't eat mind you I only eat about a half of a spoon! I can drink about 5 oz now! I was sleeved on may 21. Do it together. Have a weigh date where you both see the progress together. Shop together. You pick and let him pick an outfit when you go shopping when the time is right! Just include him cause its not easy for anyone. I hope I helped. -
I'm new to this group. This is my first post. I had my VSG done end of October last year and have lost a ton of weight. I started at 244 with the 2 week pre-op diet and I am now at 189. My problem is I've been having abdominal pain and diarrhea. The abdominal pain can be as bad a labor pains at times and can make me almost pass out. I'm not sure if this is the result of what I'm eating (or not eating since I feel like I'm not able to eat as much as I was a couple months ago, protein that is), or is it something else? I was at the ER a few weeks ago and they did a CT scan which said intestinal wall thickening, so they put me on Flagyl antibiotic. I'm a nurse so I know this is not normal. Any ideas on what might be going on? Melissa

Scared and in need of some answers
RestlessMonkey replied to Kuma72's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
You're asking questions to which the answers vary greatly, depending on variables like who your surgeon is, how you handle pain, how physically fit you are, and on and on. No one can answer for you; you have to just live through it. There is a section here called "surgery day stories"...search for that thread. It can give you OODLES of answers. You'll see they are all a little different. For me? I had very little pain each time. I did not stay overnight at the hospital, although I could have, had I or my surgeon seen the need. I slept on my left side (the side where my port is) the first night, and on my stomach the second. I slept in my own bed from the first night. I took exactly two doses of the prescription pain medication my doctor gave me; otherwise I took liquid tylenol a couple of times. I didn't do this to be brave or to tough it out; I did this because I didn't feel bad. I was able to go back to nursing school on the tuesday after my friday surgery. I think they figure you're pretty healed by 6 weeks. I could lift more than 15 pounds by day 3. I could drive by day 2, which is also when I could shower. I ate the post op plan my doctor prescribed which began with only Clear liquids (water and broth) and progressed to all food by week 6. This allowed my band, my stitches, and so on to heal internally. I drank 16 ounces of Water BEFORE I left the hospital. I was never nauseated. I had minor soreness and gas pain which was alleviated when got up and moved (around the house, around the block) and a pillow braced over my surgical sites helped me feel secure when standing up, or when in bed, during the first 2 days post op. For my great experience, you'll find people with the exact opposite...pain, nausea, vomiting, longer hospital stays, gas pain for a week or two, out of work for 2 weeks or more, crying, misery, no hunger, etc. It's really very very individual! AND...I wasn't especially physically fit for my surgery, either. When something hurts, I screech! LOL This just didn't cause me that much pain. I have had gum surgery that was worse. But not everyone is that way. In fact, I had really bad sciatica and since going under for the surgery, it hasn't bothered me since! Must've been some WONDERFUl muscle relaxants! LOL I went under easy, woke up fast and feeling good, and have had a good experience all around. -
3 WEEKS BEFORE BAND June 2008 Me and my "Sweetie" (Mexico cruise)

I've lost a lot. I had a lot of weight to lose, so I've been super restrictive with my diet for 14 months. It started coming out around month 4, that lasted 3-4 months, and it's not really coming back very fast. I went to the dermatologist, got some cortisone shots in my head which quickly halted the loss. I wish I had done that sooner. I also got a topical solution which seemed to help the loss. After the shots, I could see some regrowth. My hair was a little thin to start with, now it's really bad. I use Bosley fibers to cover up the shiny scalp at the part. Yesterday I got a new product from the dermatologist that's supposedly been used with great success in Europe for years, and was just approved for use in the US in the past of couple of months. It's a shampoo, topical spray, and vitamins. The NP said her friend also has thinning hair, has been using this about 6 weeks, and you can definitely see regrowth, so I'm really hoping it works for me.
