Welcome!! Great advice from Miss Mac. I'm in S.C. And will be having the surgery in about 4-5 weeks. My dr. Requires a 4 week liquid and high protein diet for 4 weeks and I don't know if I get to start it next week-I should be able to. My insurance company called me today and said I was approved and they had faxed it to my dr this morning so I'm just waiting to hear from my nurse in the morning to see when I can start the preop diet . Stay on this forum-lots of great info!!! Good luck!!!

Hi. I had my surgery 2 weeks ago and have done tremendously. No pain, easy to eat, felt great. Today after work and keeping my grands for my daughter i am completely washed out I just want to crawl into bed and stay there a long time. But we have the two year olds birthday party tomorrow. I hope this is temporary. When did you all start on soft protein. I feel ready and like this would help.

I got a call today from my case manager at my insurance company (Anthem BC/BS GA). My doctor submitted the paperwork but the hospital is not Blue Credited (or something like that). When i started my journey, i started with a different doctor, different hospital b/c that hospital was not credited so my surgery would be covered. So i went to the one closest to me that was, which was Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. So now they are telling me that that hospital is no longer on their list. So why in the h e double hockey sticks didnt they tell me that they were taking the hospital off the list so i wouldnt have wasted my time going to all the appointments for what i feel is nothing..I'm really hoping they can work it out b/c i still do want surgery but dont want to drive 3-4 hours just to go to the doctor all i do know right now all i want to do is cry b/c i thought i was doing the right thing and getting healthy but i just dont understand why this road block was put in front of me. Has anyone else dealt with something like this?

Just make and maintain the habit of exercise. I'm somewhat limited myself in what I can do, (hip displasia). 5 days per week, I'm up at 4:30 am before work to spend 45-60 minutes on my stationary bike and follow up with some floor work\strength training. It doesn't have to be super hard, (and won't be once you are fit). There are days I don't "feel" like it. I do it anyway. I may not train as hard as I would on a good day, but I do SOMETHING for 45 min. For me the habit is the most important thing. It got me to goal and has helped me maintain so far!

The thing is, no medication for "gas" relief is going to help, because this gas is in the abdominal cavity...it isn't inside the organs. It has to pass into the intestinal tract before it can leave the body, and the only solution to that is lots of movement. Whether it's rolling from side to side while laying in bed, getting up and walking frequently (not just for long stretches, it's better to do it less duration but more frequency), etc... Sometimes the stuff is just stubborn, it always takes me about 3-4 days to get rid of it (I've had three abdominal surgeries). After 2-3 days, that's generally when I start passing meaningful amounts out the "other" end and the pains start to subside a lot. But the only answer is movement, that's the only thing that gets the gas out.

I bought this really cute dress in a size 10 last week. Been eyeing it since it came to that store but a). Didn't feel the desire to spend $120 on it and . Didn't want to buy my current size (18-20..I'm pre op) if I wasn't going to stay this size longer. Well summer is almost over and they put this dress on clearance for$20!! They only has size 18 and size 10 left..so I scooped up the 10 I have been buying more clothes in mediums and large instead of 2xl. Also gives me motivation to fit it them :-) -
My NUT told me that a lot of his patients that have kept the weight off long term did weight watchers about 2/3rds of the way to goal. He said he thought it was helpful because of the meetings, teaming up with friends and the weigh in's each week. The plan itself...the "meals" are still going to be too much for us. Our food choices will just be different than everyone else's because we need to eat really small meals and high Protein. I know the program too. Did it several times...very successful once, a long time ago. I just don't think I am to the point where I want to pay a weekly fee. I'm still paying for the surgery.....and will for another 2 yrs, more than likely. And I pay Planet Fitness each month too. A lot of my "me" money is already going out the door for this. But.....if I ever get to the point where I feel I'm getting off track, I will definitely revisit WW's. Also, I am at a weird point. Lots of stalls. Its discouraging. I am still well within the guidelines of the diet but I have noticed that I tend to eat a little more carbs than I did in the beginning. So....that's going to stop. I have gained 1lb since starting weight training last week (have only been doing cardio up till now) I'm hoping the weight training will help with this stall, lose, stall, lose cycle I've been in. Maybe after I put on a little muscle I can dip back into the carbs??

I have Anthem BCBS and was approved in a week. I only lost 2 lbs from first visit to approval. As long as you're over 35 BMI you should be fine. But, they will want to see losses from the pre-op diet most likely. Like @@Elode said, each one is different though.

They put me on vitamin D after my bloodwork also, my doc told me up to 85% of people are vitamin D deficant but just never get tested, the vitamin D you might be on awhile inless you get out more after the surgery or get enough in your daily vitamins after surgery. I only take 2 a week on Sunday and it bothers my tummy a little but not much. Sadly time goes slow.....i just got done my 6 month visits, still waiting on my date but approved by insurance. Take this time to try to get used to eating protein, taking a multi-vitamin and if you can lose some weight during your 6 month visits the doc recomends it, it shows the insurance co. you are serious about losing the weight......

The Waiting Game...
DLCoggin replied to sunshine413's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Wow, good question. I think the biggest advantage was that I had the opportunity to observe first hand the progression of the recovery during the first several weeks following the surgery. There's no doubt that the first few weeks immediately following the surgery are the toughest. The whole getting reintroduced to food and getting familiar with the idiosyncracies of the pouch are challenging. I had the opportunity to see the challenges, both physical and mental, and to see how they progressed and what worked best for overcoming them. That and I got a lot of experience with new ways to appease a very grumpy wife! -

Hi anyone, anywhere, up for being a buddy, fairly low BMI, but diabetic, have mixed feelings heading up to the op this week , but due to diabetes , asthma, and joint pain am determined to go forwards as for me 50 is definitely NOT the new 30 ( yet ! ) looking for buddies to navigate the hazards of 'cheating' , slider foods, emotional v physical hunger , basically getting your head around the journey after NEXT weekend (eek!) Thank you ! Oh yes, new to forums, how do I upload a photo to my profile ? -
So, I had my last required pre-op test before my surgeon would submit for insurance approval (sleep apnea) and my case worker from my diet/nutrition program submitted my charts as being good to go, lost the 10 lbs (+) they required, but I have NO idea when the sleep apnea results are going to be faxed to the surgeon!!!!!!!! I know they say it typically takes about 2 weeks (had the test on the 3rd), but I called the Sleep Center, they told me to call the pulmonologist, called the pulmonologist, they told me to call the sleep center. I am just going nuts praying these results come in soon so they can submit everything to BCBS!!!! I am so eager to get this surgery done I can't even stand it! And just when I feel like I'm close to the finish line, it seems to be further and further away.... Anyway, sorry to whine everyone. I just needed to vent. Please keep your fingers crossed that they send those blasted test results into my surgeon ASAP!!!

It all varies on your program.. Mine cleared me for anything at three weeks. I don't eat bread.. But that's my own choice. -

Just before my surgery in June of 2011 and now 3 Nov 2011 around 60 pounds lost! -
It took me years to get up the courage to go with WLS (I weigh 500lbs at 6' tall). My surgery is in 2 weeks. I start a 2 week pre-op of clear liquids with protein shakes on Monday. Not too worried about that. Did Optifast before and have lots of family support. But when I read post-op topics it seems that a lot of people are not doing well or are unhappy. Getting hungry all the time, having lots of cravings, only losing a lb a week although consuming 250 calories a day. Is that only true for newby's? Are people unhappy that they chose this after a month or two months out? I don't plan to back out now, but I'm starting to become more apprehensive than excited. This is truly my last resort and if I don't have positive results I have no where else to turn. I can barely walk right now and so it will take a significant weight loss before I am able to do any meaningful exercise which I know will speed up the loss.

Some of your comments are scaring me!
losetobemeagain replied to DebiC's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I am I think 15 wks and lost 56 lbs don't regret a thing, do I sometimes wish I could eat something that I use to yes, but is it worth it to me NO so I get over it pretty quick usually just takes a look in the mirror and the feeling is gone... I can also tell you that I am never hungry I have to tell myself to go and eat... I haven't had a stall yet until this week, and yes it's sucks and I can't help but think OMG am I done losing weight, but you know what next week is or the week after when the scale moves i'll be fine... It is a matter of defeating your mind... I read some of those post to and all I have to say about that is some People need to make sure their minds are in the right place before having any wls, alot of our problems start there, it is one big head game... -
I just posted a thread on this topic as well. I'm on Unjury protein power as well.. nasty stuff. but they all are. But 1 scoopful = 28 grams of protein and you'll need it. I mixed Unjury non flavored with chicken broth the first week I was home. I went to Jamba Juice today and got one of their lite (150 cal mixes) and dropped a scoopful in it, and it was drinkable (I did not gag as much). Also, I have problems with milk and milk is an important source of proteine. I can't wait to go to foods so i can have my cottage cheese instead . If I ever even think about cheating in 4 months time, i will remember the taste of my Unjury protein and that will keep me on track!!! ha ha.. like Pavlov's dog.. instead of salvating, i'll remember how horrible drinking the stuff was. good luck to you. its only for 4 weeks anyway. so suck it up!)

Cardiac Clearance Tomorrow... Nervous!
Baker_gurl replied to RoundedRed's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I had to do the stress test a few weeks ago and it wasn't as bad as I thought. The cardiologist told me there are two different categories of stress tests preformed. I was low risk, so I just had to have the heart monitor electrodes (?) stuck to my chest and walked on the treadmill. Every 3 minutes, the machine would up the speed and elevation. I was able to tell the technician how much I could take. For the cardiac clearance they also had to perform an echo heart ultrasound. That hurt a bit. The technician had to firmly push the wand into my chest to get accurate pictures of my heart. My chest was sore for about 5 days afterwards. All in all, I would say that the cardiac clearance was fairly easy and stress free. -
Cardiac Clearance Tomorrow... Nervous!
itzme752 replied to RoundedRed's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Nah none of those things will prevent clearance unless they are way out of control. I have a heart murmur and had to have a couple of echocardiograms and wear a heart monitor for 2 weeks to make sure everything was OK since I was newly diagnosed and got my clearance from there. Good luck to ya! -

Contact sports after Sleeve and excess skin
maharet111 replied to Derbymama21's topic in Fitness & Exercise
From what I have watched on TV..I would wait a bit longer to really participate fully in all out contact. You definitely want your sleeve line to be fully healed and for me I was still feeling the internal stitches pulling until around 6 weeks. It wasn't until then that I felt healed. Although the other part of this is..you are going to be tired after the surgery with the nutrition restriction etc, so keep that in mind as you plan your return to the ring! The excess skin is a crap shoot..age, genetics etc..all play a part.
