Emotional roller coaster
JamieLogical replied to buffalomatt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
As @@FrankiesGirl said, hormones are stored in fat. As you begin to rapidly lose weight in the early weeks post-op, those hormones are released back into your blood stream and can cause mood swings, irritability, depression, etc. The can even cause increased fertility, which is why it's recommended that women use backup birth control the first couple of months. -
Hi! I am 3 years out from my lap-band surgery. About 7 months ago, I started having a bit of discomfort under my left breast when I would bend over to pick something up. When I would be sitting down, I would lean back to avoid this feeling. I had my surgery in California, but have subsequently moved to PA and am followed by a surgeon in Pittsburgh. Over the phone twice (it is a 2-hour drive), they told me that it did not sound like anything band-related, perhaps, just some inflammation. It went completely away after a couple of months. Four months ago, I went to the ER with severe abdominal pain. After x-rays and a CT scan with contrast, they diagnosed me with constipation. Okay. I took some meds and did get rid of my constipation (!), BUT since then have had chronic diarrhea (sometimes just water). In the interim, as part of the workup to determine the cause of my diarrhea, weight loss, extreme fatigue, I had a colonoscopy and EGD. Last week, the EGD showed that my band has eroded into my stomach. Now, I obviously have been in contact with my surgeon in the city, and am scheduled for an upper GI series and interview, etc. next week. On the phone, however, they tell me that none of my symptoms have to do with my band. My PCP here says that he doesn't see how it could be anything but my band. I have even found an undissolved pill in my stool. Interestingly, one of the symptoms of erosion is supposed to be weight gain because of loss of restriction, but I have lost 25 pounds in these past few months and have very little appetite and still have lots of restriction. On films, my band is pretty far into my stomach; it is not a minor erosion. I come here wondering if anyone else has experienced these types of symptoms with erosion. Because if this hypermotility is not band-associated, I'm wondering what my next step will be. Oh, in case you're wondering, I have lost 75 pounds. Thanks, Kelli

Hi everyone! I'm not quite sure if this is the right forum, but I'm sure its no biggie. I have just made an appointment with my doctor for a lap band consultation. Currently, I am 24 yrs. old at 5ft 3in and weigh 240lbs (109 kg). I have toiled over weight reduction surgery for the past 3 or 4 years. I was just wondering about a few things that maybe you all could help me with before I even go to my consultation. I know hair loss is very typical post-op, and is experienced differently person to person, but I was just wondering if your hair ever comes back? I was a Water polo player back in my high school days and the swim cap that I wore every day sort of contributed to a slight thinning of my hair, especially in the front, so I'm a bit concerned about if my hair will regain its natural thickness once my body has leveled out (protien levels and all that jazz). I was also wondering about pregnancy after the surgery. Have any of you women had children since you have been banded? I do plan on having children sometime in my life (preferably before I'm 30), and I was wondering if the band has any sort of complications with pregnancy. I've done a lot of self research on this, and I really think that this is the right choice for me. I've been the chubby girl my whole life, and I am the only one in my immediate family that has ever had a weight problem. Any advice or comments would be greatly appriciated!

Question ? Did you gain your energy level back?
marfar7 replied to Ree224's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Absolutely! I could feel the energy come back fully after I started eating actual food, at about 4 weeks post op. The liquid stage sucks, not only becuz I starved but becuz I had very little energy. As the weight comes off, ull reap the benefits of more energy also. I also take Levothyroxine for my thyroid. have for about 12 yrs. Haven't noticed a difference in that area since having wls. Good luck! -
I have heard a lot of people use the refrain "it gets better". My question is, does it get good? Also, is dehydration an ongoing battle after you reach your weight goal?

Am I Losing Too Much, Too Soon? 8.8Kg In 9 Days
hellojello replied to hellojello's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Ok good to know .. might as well enjoy this rapid weight loss as long as I can then! haha thanks  -
So today, for the first time in a long time I am no longer obese. My BMI is 29.8 so I am classed as overweight. I don't really agree with the whole BMI thing but it feels good to know that I am almost at a healthy weight. Just 30 more pounds to go! For anyone that has plateaued, stick with it. I've finally started losing weight after a 3/4 month plateau and it feels really good. Just yesterday 4 different people told me how slim I was looking. I will never grow tired of these compliments!

Emotional roller coaster
FrankyG replied to buffalomatt's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
So sorry you've had some complications but hopefully it is all resolved for the better now! The mood swings and sadness and depressed feelings (and even rage, joy, irritability) can be chalked up to hormone swings because of the fat you're losing (fat is a very efficient hormone storage medium and as you lose fat, the hormones are flushed into your system to cause all sorts of mood changes). It is normal to feel down after having this procedure, especially the "what the @#! did I just do" type of depression and I imagine it's multiplied by having complications. Be kind to yourself and just know it does get better and once you start really improving weight and activity wise. Good luck to you! -
The slower you lose the more you wont have to change at goal. You will have already long been out of diet mode. At least that was true for me. I just do exactly as I did before I reached goal and my weight naturally levelled off at a normal BMI. The main adjustment now is getting used to not being fat and making myself pick up a size 6 in a store because I never think they will fit but they always do. My weight never changes by more than two pounds and I am finally not weighing myself every single day. I never dieted or worked out so I just let my band help me eat less and I gave some real thought to the choices I ate so for me the losing phase and the maintaining phase arent that different.

MISERABLE! Please tell me it gets better
losing-it replied to lauratro's topic in Weight Loss Surgery Success Stories
Hi Lauratro. My daughter and I both had sleeve gastrectomies a few years ago and we both went through similar stages to you - and it does get better I'm on holiday right now, a U.K. Size 10-12 (was a 24) which is exactly where I wanted to be and best of all I can eat and drink whatever I want. Last night I had carbonara, I had a little steak, a few chips, some salad then some banana split, wine, French bread and cheese later on! You can eat far easier if you keep on top of your fluids and you do eventually get the hang of how much and how slowly to eat. Though I still get it wrong sometimes even after 2 years. I find small amounts more often suits me. I'm not so good a big meals but if I do have a big meal I stop and start and take it slow. Honestly it took about a year to find my rhythm with this new way of eating but I love it. At your stage, ice lollies, sorbet and ice cream were my saviour and helps keep the fluid up in an enjoyable way. The pain should all pass soon so long as you have no infection so get that checked if it persists! I hope your feeling better soon! It's honestly the best thing I've done for my weight problem. I'm sure you'll think so too soon x -
Hi all. I 've been having a bit of stress here. My mom(77yrs) broke her leg, compound fractures of the tibia and fibula. She has had one surgery and is expected to have a few more. Problem is she is not healing. Dr's say that if healing doesn't start or if an infection sets in they will have to amputate. Oh ya my parents live in California. Long distance stress. Seems petty to also bitch about work stress. I was out all last week- yes I know it was a vacation but no one does my job when Im out. I can only imagine what it will be like the week before the cruise, in June and the weeks after. Im visiting my sister this weekend (was planned before the vacation). She is in Kansas City, so more time on planes- probably in thunderstorms-yay. Saw the eye Dr yesterday- I need glasses. yay. Not losing weight. Actually really struggling to keep stable. I never knew stress to cause me to eat but now with food such an ever present focus it is the first place to take the stress hit. Well that and exercising- no energy- but I drag my A*s to the trainer because I pre-paid for that. Im a little low right now. I need to count my blessings; husband, family, friends, home, employed, 80lbs down form my high. Just breathe. Thanks for listening.

Hi, I am a 38 year old male who was banded on Nov 9th 2010. My weight loss in the pre-op and 6 weeks post op was substantial, but now has slowed down to about an average of one pound a week, which my surgeon says is exactly what he wants. Problem that I am having is that I find myself constantly obsessing about my band having slipped. I have made mistakes over the past few months. There have been times when I have been stuck, and I have vomitted probably 3 or 4 times. Sliming is not uncommon for me if I am not very cautious how fast I eat. I find that learning how to eat has been the biggest challenge and if I am not concious about it I will sometimes eat to fast and get in trouble fast. Now because I have had these episodes of being stuck and a few episodes of vomitting, I am really scared that I have damaged something or that my band has slipped. Everytime I feel anything different or any kind of sensation anywhere near my band I panic and think that I have done something. Any time my restriction feels decreased or I feel that I could eat too much I panic. I think everything seems to be working well. I still feel satiety after a small amount of food. I don't think I am at my "sweet spot" yet, but am getting close. I just wish I could get some reassurance that my band is still where it is suppose to be and that I haven't damaged it by being stuck or vomitting. My episodes of getting stuck are far less frequent now as I learn to eat, so I know I am on the right track. However, because of my obsessive personality I just can't stop worryingf that I have damaged this thing by not always following the rules. Can anyone tell me if I would know for sure if my band has slipped? What would I be feeling? would I have more restriction or less? Any reassurance would be appreciated.

Doing a liquid diet 9 mths post op? Is it helpful or useless?
marfar7 posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Saw another post about this (actuallt it was about the 5 day pouch test) and it brought up more questions for me: Is our new stomachs stretchable and if so, will doing like 7 to 10 days of liquids bring us back to the restriction I once had? I've read both that u can and can't stretch ur stomach. I've read that since we don't have an actual pouch, the test won't work on us. I've also read that u CAN stretch it and a time of liquids can bring u back (even tho scientifically it sounds impossible that u can shrink the stomach by doing just liquids). If we could shrink our stomachs so easily, why would we have 85% of our stomachs removed in the first place. After a 4 mth stall (I eat the wrong foods in small portions but notice myself becoming hungrier and eating more) I decided to try 7 to 10 days of liquids only to give it a shot (altho I haave doubts that it'll work). Started yesterday. Drank Protein shakes and tomato Soup and literally starved. Coulda eaten my arm yesterday. When I read a couple posts about the liquid diet being unneccessary, I rethought my diet. Then I got on the scale. Lost 3 lbs. Haven't seen the 140's since getting married 2 yrs ago (after which my lapband slipped and I gained 34 lbs). So now I'm a little undecided on what to do. I'm pretty stoked about the loss. My plan is to get to my goal weight (most likely 135-140) and then Ill be able to easily maintain it with my portion control. I've been able to maintain my current weight for 4 mths fairly easily. Not sure what to do now. Advise? And yes, I know I'm sposed to track my food, protein first, lots of Water. So plz don't just give that advise.... -
I am just starting and I entered the wrong weight. I entered what I weighed at home and when I got to the Dr's office I was 3 pounds less. How do I change the starting weight?

Well, I'm 3 months out and have said good bye to 34.7 pounds forever.. I've had 2 fills and really feel restricted in the morning, but by 4:00-ish I feel I can't eat alot more than I should. Going to weigh-in apt on Friday and will see about another fill. I know my weight loss has been good ...BBBBUUUUTTTT I am dissappointed in my weight loss. I've only loss about 3 lbs in the last month:confused:. In addition to my band, I'm also on high protein/low carb eating (won't say diet b/c its a lifestyle change)...so I expect to lose more than the 1-2 lb week guidline. In all fairness, I should also report I had sinus surgery on 7/2. Not sure if that has something to do with it or not (hoping so). Thanks for all of the support thru this whole process. Getting my band was one of the best things I did!! Kristina

well, if you arent eating anything, you'd lost weight and be at goal..so your eating, just not anything good...and hitting high cal foods...oh well, whats done is done......so back to basics...you seem to understand what not to do and so now, you just need to let the band work and do what works..what is good for you to eat....lean Protein, veggies/fruit...you can do it...you did it before when you got the band so you just need to do it again.....if you really want to, you will...we are here for you all the best sweetie -
Ok, as i lose weight i am really starting to see the excess skin develop. I am wondering what exercises, if any, fellow sleevers have found to combat this problem. Stomach, arms, etc are the main points of interest but as always, ANY information is ALWAYS welcome. Thanks in advance!
-
I was sleeved on 7/31 and and a little over 3 week out, I eat eggs, Beans, cottage cheese, cheese sticks, Jello, apple sauce and Protein drinks, I am starting to get bored and I wanted to get ideas from people who were sleeve the same time as me. What are u all eating at this point??! I am also a slow looser I started my journey at 204 and I am at 192 currently, I really thought this process would of been faster but it's ok I am learning to be patient and not give up, I am a band to sleeve patient and know the weight isn't going to melt off.

Has anyone lost weight and had problems with the extra skin and your facing aging faster. That may sound stupid but I had a friend that lost 65-75 pounds and she looks 10 years older now more wrinkles - he body looks great but her face took a hit... (Not to sound mean). So what can I do before and after surgery to help with my skin to hopefully make it more "forgiving" Thanks for you help guys!
-
I'm getting some loose skin that I didn't have before weight loss. Also I don't really consider it a problem but my stomach does tend to rumble and grumble a lot when I am eating and for about an hour after. It's getting quieter and quieter as time passes sinces surgery though. And it's just making some noise, not causing me any pain or even discomfort. These are the only things that come close to problems. Physically I feel terrific and everything is in good working order

I don't count calories (per se). I record my food in MyFitnessPal in order to track my protein. My protein goal is 100 grams a day. Since I am still eating a lot of the same foods every day (am still trying new foods) I hover right around 1200 calories. My NUT said I should still lose weight at 1400 calories so I don't really look at calories.

Hi there, I just finally got my band last Friday and I discovered this site from my Dr. I just love all of the information on it. I too was denied from insurance so went and had it done from a great Dr. in Mexico. I am in the recovery faze and am looking forward to being one of the testimonies of loosing 75 pounds. I have a family history of morbid obesity which them comes along with all the medical problems that will give you. Diabeties, sleep apnea ext. So I wanted to fight this weight problem now and felt that the band was the best decision for me. Any advice for someone in recovery would be great. Thanks
