SF WLS- NEWBIE HERE! some insight please?

Welcome! I was very pro-active during the stage that you are in now. I called/emailed the center at least once a week to see if they needed anything else from me, how the process was going, etc. I basically did all the leg work myself as my assigned person wasn't that great. Also, nothing wrong with checking with your insurance company - mine was extremely helpful (BCBSIL)when you have questions. I started at one hospital, stuck with them until I got my approval and switched to another as I never felt comfortable with the first hospital. Also, post questions, this is a great group and a lot of very useful information. Good luck! Joan -

It's good news you don't need a CPAP machine! I'm curious though, if it isn't sleep apnea, what co morbidity then qualifies you for the bariatric program? They had me do a bunch of blood work at the medical evaluation last week. Everything came back normal except..... My vitamin D levels are really low! Normal range is 20-79ml and mine was 11. So I was prescribed 50,000 units of vitamin D to take once a week for 12 weeks! Not sure if I have to complete the cycle before surgery. I guess it's a good thing I wasn't planning on having surgery until June! -
Feeling Discouraged - Slow Weight Loss
Syaniya replied to Andre Garcia's topic in Gastric Bypass Surgery Forums
35 lbs in less than 2 months seems Awesome to me. Could you have lost 35 lbs in such a short time before vsg?? Your body has been through a major change and it is still figuring out what is going on. Also, you seem lucky and don't really look like you had much of a stall. Many people have 2 or 3 weeks of no loss, so good work. Keep doing what your doing and just like you hit the under 300, before you know it you can get in the 100's Sent from my SM-N920V using the BariatricPal App -

Hey! I'm December 10th too! I have to do a 2 week pre-op using a product called Smartforme. There are drink mixes & various foods that are high in protein. For dinner I am able to eat a low-cal, low-fat diet, which is nice to be able to eat with my kids. 24hours before surgery I have to go all liquid. -

What is Perfect Restriction
Dandy Andi replied to want2beme's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
Totally discouraged at the moment... Received a Realize Band on 2/4/08. Waited 6 weeks for my first fill of 3 cc. After another 3 weeks, I went in for an additional fill because I felt I was eating too much. Received an additional 1.5cc. That worked for about a week until I tried some very well chewed steak. After throwing that up, I haven't been able to get my tummy to settle down. Nothing goes down well. I went 10 days throwing up daily. The dr. removed 1.5cc yesterday in an effort to help me consume liquids, but as of yet, I haven't noticed much of a change. It feels like I swallowed a baseball, yet the lower part of my stomach is VERY hungry. Has anyone else experienced extreme irritation? How long does it take to calm back down? The dr. wants an upper GI in 2 days and the thought of that has me cringing. Need your insight!! -
Serious COLD FEET!!!!!
Paityn replied to SampTheChamp's topic in General Weight Loss Surgery Discussions
That was me the night before surgery, and even being wheeled into the operating room. Hang in there. Remember why you are doing this!! Its really hard I am not going to lie. A lot harder then I thought it would be. I am about 3 weeks out. I have done exceptionally well. No problems, no sickness. The hardest part is the emotions. Mine were all over the place, still are on occasion. Best advice I can give is to surround yourself with positivity. Positive people, positive articles and posts. Stay clear of anything remotely negative. That can just let those crappy feelings seep in and those are not helpful. You are making a drastic change, one that is going to change your life forever, for the better! Right now you need to feel uplifted and supported. Just know you aren't alone. I am happy to talk with you anytime you need someone to listen! -
1St Day Of Pre-Sleeve Diet
shortypants replied to susieq1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I started my pre-op diet this week. My NUT has me on a 5 week pre-op, slowly coming off of carbs, caffine, and sugars, for 2 weeks. Third week start 1 protein shake for breakfast, then last 2 weeks are shakes for breakfast and lunch. I too work 12 hour shifts.....but so far so good!! Good luck! -
1St Day Of Pre-Sleeve Diet
jhansen71 replied to susieq1's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The 1st 3 days are the hardest. Your body goes through withdrawal of caffeine, sugar, fats, etc. My husband did the diet with me to show his support and did not experience near what I went through. I actually felt so bad day 3 that i called in sick. After the 3 days I wasn't stomach hungry as long as I drank my Protein shakes, I was head hungry from time to time. I also went through liking the shakes the first day and not liking them on day 2 and 3 (made me nauseous), then day 4 I was able to drink them again by changing to a different flavor. The whole process took me by surprise. I had lost so much sleep prior to starting the diet about not eating for 2 weeks and I didn't think it was that bad after I got past the first 3 days. I'm proud to say that I did not cheat once. Stay ahead of your hunger and eat so you do not get so hungry that you cheat. It is important to take your diet stuff with you to work and eat or drink something often (obviously staying within your diet guidelines) and drink Water, water, water because this helps you stay full and helps flush out your liver. I dont know if you have ever had surgery, so this advice also goes for pain. Don't wait for the pain to start coming, get pain medicine before you feel it. If you stay ahead of it by taking it even if you don't yet feel the pain, you will reduce your discomfort tremendously. I hope this all helped. Good luck to you! -
I too had the surgery on 1-7 but I am only on protein shakes water broth and sugar free ice pops until next week. I have to walk 2x a day for 15 minutes my stomach feels okay but where the hiatal hernia was repaired still bothers me . I took a pain killer and it took the edge off. I hope this gets better:)

I had my final appointment in Mooresville NC last Wednesday and was so excited hoping I would hear something by this week...called the insurance company yesterday and they said they had not received my claim yet then called my doctor and they said could take up to THREE WEEKS after final appointment before they submit because it can take that long to get the report from the psych evaluation and then I am at the mercy of the insurance company!!! I know this is a long process and patience is key but I was told that I would most likely have a surgery date by end of September and I was hoping first week of October because I have a few days off school!! I'm getting so antsy at the waiting and I really won't even know when it's submitted and I don't want to bug the docs office by constantly calling!!! It's frustrating so im turning to my fellow sleevers for some words if wisdom......

My pulmonary doctor told me that since I was carrying too much weight on my chest that it couldn't expand properly and that is why my peak flow is quite low and I am quite short of breath. Is there anybody out there that as been banded awhile and had this particular circumstance? I really had a asthma problem after the anesthesia - had to start taking breathing treatments for a couple of weeks. How long did it take to see an improvement in your asthma? Thanks, Kerry

Pre-Op Milk shakes?
mountain_lover replied to mountain_lover's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Thank you for your suggestions, I am going to go to my doctor and buy some samples to try out before I buy the large order. I still have a little more time before I will find out if I get approved for the surgery and when to start on the two weeks of shakes, so I will go get them right away!! -
Sweets bingeing prior to pre-surgery diet
Esther54 posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Anyone else who did binge-eating and making every bad food choice possible prior to starting (and delaying starting) the pre-op diet? I feel disgusting and actually am getting turned off to the sweets and junk. What predicated the bingeing in recent weeks was my bariatric group telling me I might want to GAIN 10 lbs prior to surgery (to be over 200 lbs)---really crazy. Was this just to increase my medical necessity in the eyes of the insurance company? -

Hi Kathy. Welcome to the site and also welcome to GA. I am not too far from you. I live in Buckhead/Brookhaven area. This site is very informational and there are alot of great and supportive people on here. I was just approved by insurance on Friday, so next week, I start my pre-surgery testing. I will be banded at Emory by Dr. Edward Lin. Still trying to debate on whether i want to wait til December and enjoy my mother-in-laws great Thanksgiving feast or just take the first available date. You mentioned you were looking for a job, what do you do? -
Sleeved 1/24...how am I doing?
k8bwalsh replied to jbcone's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Wow! Can't believe you are going back to work so fast!!! My doctor wants me to take 3 weeks off (& I'm hoping he'll extend it to 4, haha!) I was sleeved 1/26 and really can't imagine going back to work so soon. I'm still exhausted and need naps through out the day, but am not on pain meds anymore. Glad you are doing so great!! -
I would definitely do whatever she suggests. I'm three days post-op right now and the majority of the pain I'm dealing with right now is gas...the incisions themselves seem to be feeling pretty good and look like they are healing really quickly. The gas though...I wasn't expecting that...

It's 330 am and I'm rocking. It was a rough few hours post op, no pain meds and nausea. But I'm great now. No major gas pains, and just a little tender tummy. Doc was super happy to get inside and find my liver had shrank so much Bc I stuck true to my preop, he said surgery went smooth and fast. I'm sooooo not even hungry which makes me really happy and 17lbs done past two weeks preop so I'm in twosville. Thank everyone so much that prayed. I love my support group on here. Will keep everyone posted leak test soon

I official got my approval today after 6 LONG months of insurance requirements. I go in for my pre-op this Thursday and get started with my pre-op diet next week. Anyone else Aug 3rd that want to partner up in this journey?

Hi all, I am 6 1/2 months out, and while I have experienced mini stalls along the way my current situation has me a little stressed out. I was averaging about 10 lbs a month but since the end of march I've only lost 5-6 lbs, which I was ok with. It has to slow down sometime right? But in the last two weeks I've crept up about 2 lbs. The only thing I've changed is that I've upped my calories from 800-900, my nut wants me at 1200 but I struggle to get even 900 and now that I'm gaining I'm hesitant to add more calories. Yes, I track everything on mfp. Yes, I get in all of my protein and water. Yes, I do low carb. I have been more active in the last few weeks, and, nothing. The stall I can handle, it's normal, healthy, blah blah, but the gaining really sucks. I've been between 175 and 171 for a month. Is this it?

My band is empty for the first time in 6 years!
shannon crotts replied to wordygirl74's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
Does your stomach feel better w/o the band?? Mine is coming out next week and moving to sleeve in May. I am praying this pain goes away. My stomach just hurts all the time. Hard to explain other then just moderate pain. I am scared that it's just my stomach and the sleeve will increase the pain. Even though i never had pain prior to the band. -

You'll get it, and sooner than you think! Mine fell about 3 weeks post-op. That was my first real NSV, I lost my panties. My pants themselves followed two weeks later!
