My husband politely told me that since surgery I often have bad breath. Any relation to surgery? I am not drinking Protein shakes... So that isn't it.

I would disagree. Signs of slippage usually involve nausea, new onset of acid reflux, ability to eat larger portions suddenly or the opposite-difficulty eating/drinking at all, sometimes abdominal pain etc. The fact that you are asymptomatic can mean that your band is on the tighter end of your green zone. I would food journal and ensure that you are getting adequate protein/nutrition and fluids. If not, than you are too tight, simply because you can not take in minimum nutritional requirements. Sometimes a mere 0.1-0.5cc removed will keep you green but allow you to eat more and consume your minimum nutrition. I always recommend being on the loser side of green to prevent complications such as erosion, slippage etc. It's not necessary to be so tight you become symptomatic or cannot eat properly. Being day 3 you can still be inflamed, just depends on how much of a fill you added. I noticed I am much more sensitive to fills now that Im 3.5 yrs out. At 6cc I could not swallow water at 5.5 I'm at green.

I spoke with my doctor's office this afternoon and they said that most likely my insurance company used a different BMI calculator to calculate my BMI. I am really frustrated because according to my calculations I do have a BMI of 40. I know that I am right on the edge, but seriously to deny me for 4 pounds is ridiculous! My doctor's office said that my only option is to appeal with a letter about how unhealthy I am. They can't resubmit or adjust the numbers, I can only appeal. I am not sure how this will work as they denied me because of 4 pounds and if I don't meet the requirement, I don't meet the requirement. My other concern is why didn't my doctor consider that they may use a different calculator? They submit to Anthem on a daily basis and they should know the ins and outs. Argh!!! I am seriously considering going to Mexico as an option. I spoke with Dr Ortiz's office today and I can be in surgery in just two weeks! All for less than my deductible/ copay and my doctors stupid $3000 program fee. I should have just gone to mexico in the first place. Sorry for the rant but this is 6 months of frustration.

Psychological Eval - what did you experience?
brandiddy replied to Chris Lee's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
The person I saw dug in pretty deep. I guess looking for any signs of eating disorders or ways to help me control my eating and to make sure there's no chance of self sabatoge. They got very personal and wanted to know a lot of family history. They are looking for HOW you got where you are in hopes to give you options to change those habits or fill those voids. But it wasn't bad, and I was still approved. Some people tell you to lie to them, but they know when you are so dont. Lol. Hope this helps. Good luck with your journey! BTMOMOF3 -
Hello to all you brave souls :whoo:, My family doctor recommended Lap Band. Through research, visiting this forum, and finding the right surgeon I thought I was on my way. At the private seminar preparing me for surgery, they discussed the three options this surgeon completes. Here, I found that both the Lap Band and the Sleeve cost the same and my BMI and age make me easily eligible for both. They told me that after the healing process, Lap Band patients hunger spikes while Sleeve patients appetites remain diminished. Sleeve surgeries remove the part of the stomach that produce the majority the the hormones that elevate appetite:nervous? I really think Lab Band is the way to go for me, but am worried about appetite spikes and failure. I also worry about erosion, slippage and port problems. As well, with the Sleeve, I am very worried about leakage, and regaining the weight after the banana shaped stomach begins to stretch. I know that with the band, a fill could make all the difference if your weight begins to climb:confused:? Any encouragement, information, and support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

It is Terry, my son bought me a Sriracha cookbook for christmas because I love that rooster hot sauce and I have made several things from it and they have all been awesome. I also made an excellent Sriracha lentil soup and some Edemame Dumplings that were to die for. I may have a small stomach and only eat small amounts but I love to cook and find new ways to get my protein.

Preop diet question...
Unforgettable replied to Megan9463's topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
yea each surgeon has a different protocol. The main thing is low carb/sugar. I had to follow a low carb low fat high protein diet using medifast liquid products, not tasty at all! -
In the initial stages protein is king. You need it more than anything at this stage and through the rest of your life, but especially at this stage. If you stick to the plan, you will lose the fat. Many of us have failed diets so much that it is hard to believe that it will work this time. The ghost of failed diets past haunts us. This time you have REAL science on your side. I was a guy that most everyone, even my surgeon, didn't think would make goal. I guess they thought I was too light-hearted about it all. What they didn't see was the mean, stubborn guy inside of me that loves a good fight.

well yes ive been told to start off with oats and sugar free juices and protein shakes. Ive tried oats and honestly didn't like it so. fresh sugar free juices on a daily basis. and protein shakes too.

My first attempt at surgery was on 9/18/08. They opened my up and closed me up. Apparently, the hyatal hernia was just to big for my doctor to handle alone. That surgery was on Thursday and I went back to work Monday. I got a call on the 29th to see if I could come in for surgery on October 1st, which I did. So I am banded (yeah!!!) I am so very sore. I am not allowed to do much until my diaphram heals more, they say it will be extrememly painful if my stomach slips up past my diaphram again. Has any one else had this occur or am I the lone ranger? Did the pain ever, ever, ever get better? I am walking, but not every hour. I try not to cough much because the hernia guy said I shouldn't. Basically I am paranoid that the hernia will reoccur. As for the rest, it is going ok. I am still on liquids and having a hard time getting all my Protein. I did discover those "bullets" though, it makes it much easier. If anyone has done this I would appreciate knowing your experiences. Kathy :tt2:

How Is Everyone Doing?
lovelyladynhouston replied to Suzannesh's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
#dcl what are u eating? I have a protein shake every morning for breakfast. Today for lunch I had a tiny salad with avocado it was soo good but cld eat a very little. For dinner I will have more salad and fish. Still stall went for my 1 mth visit Dr, told me not to worry about it. I walk 2 miles every morning so I thought that wld have help with the weight loss... -
Bad Bad idea in my opinion. All I've ever seen is patients who take those drugs, lose some weight, then gain it all back PLUS MORE afterwards. Some develop serious side effects as well. Just work your sleeve program, write everything down to be sure your protein/fluid/calorie intake are as prescribed, track your exercise, and only weigh yourself once a week. Eventually when your body is ready the weight will come off. Stop being so hard on yourself.

I agree with what everyone has said above. Phentermine is a bad idea. Unless you want to have to lose it twice, as someone said. And, as someone else said - it's almost certainly less safe than they think. Why is the 31st so important?? Sip sip sip, eat Protein, then veggies, sip some more... and take a walk. Of course, I recognize this is easy for me to say, since I've not had my surgery yet, and I'm sitting here swilling a DC, but I've also been on phentermine... and here I am today, waiting for surgery, and at my all time highest weight. Nuff said! Except: hang in there, you CAN do this!! Sheri

Isopure zero calorie Protein powder is great. The strawberries and cream and the unflavored is great. You can put it in the premier shake to get the protein out of the way at once. I do this in the morning this way I know I have gotten all my protein in. You can also add a little Water to the shake to thin it out. I blend it in the blender. I use the strawberry and cream to add to the vanilla Protein Shake when I get tired of the vanilla. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Hi, I've had my band for almost 4 years. I lost about 50 lbs total and I have gained back 30 of that. I got pregnant 6 months after my band and did fine throughout my pregnancy. I even breastfeed my son for a year afterward. I really think that breastfeeding boosted my weight loss. I had some problems and my band slipped and I have had nothing but trouble ever since. I go for a fill and its too much and i have to get it unfilled and gain weight. I'm seriously thinking about getting a revision to the sleeve. Any pointers? I feel like such a loser, but I so tired of being overweight. I feel like this is my best option. I really am at a point that I hate my band.

What's your goal? And what are you doing to get yourself there?
enjoythetime replied to funky_monkey800's topic in LAP-BAND Surgery Forums
@@funky_monkey800 Setting goals is key to any successful execution, so, yes, I think we should all have goals that we set and work towards. The key is to set realistic goals to avoid getting frustrated with ourselves . Some months you'll lose more than others that's just the cycle of our bodies, when the scale is moving slow or standing still, realize you're still losing, you're losing inches and honestly this is way more important than any number on the scale! So, maybe mix it up a little one month aim to lose x amount of lbs. for the next month to be down a pant or shirt size . The other important thing to do is to reward yourself along the way for each goal you meet, such as buying a new pair of pants, or getting your hair done, whatever is a treat for you that's non-food related. Another thing that really helps me is to recognize your daily accomplishments which is what helps you hit your long-term goals, like walking past the donuts at work (did that this morning), taking the stairs instead of the elevator, making a healthy substation in a recipe etc. As far as the shakeology goes I didn't do anything other than follow my doctor's dietary instructions and listen to my band. With that said I don't think there's anything wrong with drinking a shake now then if you're in a pinch and unable to eat something healthy or to bump up your Protein if you're running short , but don't rely on them. In my opinion doing so defeats the purpose of the band. You're doing a fantastic job!!!!!! -
Are you using protein shakes? If so, you may have a temporary dairy/lactose intolerance. Perhaps try using non dairy protein shakes and see how you go.

Sleeved May 31st and Feeling Great
meggiep replied to karaserene1985's topic in Tell Your Weight Loss Surgery Story
Hey Kara! Seems like I can't help but give you support everywhere ;-P You should also chck out a thread I started in Post Op (which is where you belong now!) comparing people who do pre-op diets and those who do not. I don't want you to be upset if you lose a bit slowly at first, or hit a semi stall sooner- For example, I lost 18 pounds on my two week pre-op, so then lost 12 my first two weeks after and NOTHING for a week starting at two weeks, rather than the oft mentioned three weeks. However, I started losing again this week- am close to 5 pounds lost this week. Just remember everyone is different and everyone is normal! I have great faith you will be a stellar sleeve girl because you faithfully follow the diets you elect to do. This diet will be different- because it is the last one, the one that will work like no other, and the one that leaves you with a tool to keep it off. Are you drinking your Protein drinks yet? xoxo -
Post-Op Essentials Shopping List Suggestions
necij posted a topic in PRE-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
Hi I'm new here! My surgery was approved and I am going to do my shopping for everything that I will need post-op. What have you tried and how did it work? Any advice on items that might make recovery more comfortable? I am super worried about having the essential Vitamin and Protein supplements and am afraid that I won't have what I need! I have been unable to work due to my weight and am on a fixed income, so I can't afford to make any mistakes! Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! -
Bloated and constipated
catwoman7 replied to New&Improved's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I know you've read this a thousand times here, but chronic constipation is a very common problem for post-ops, both RNY and VSG. you have to find something that works for you and keep on top of it. A lot of us take a capful of Miralax every day. I'm not sure if it has the same name in Australia, but the generic name is polyethylene glycol. It's safe to take every day. I put a capful in my protein shake every morning. others take things like stool softeners, Smooth Move tea, magnesium tablets. Some eat a few prunes every day. Just find something - or a combination of things - that work for you. Even though I take Miralax every day, I still get backed up maybe twice a month. When I do, I take Milk of Magnesia for a night or two - it usually does the trick. Unlike Miralax, though, that should NOT be taken every day - you should only take that when needed. So deal with your current "jam", and once it's cleared, get started on a safe treatment every day to prevent it from happening again. P.S. the constipation is probably causing the bloating. You have air backed up in there that can't get through because of the "jam" -
Food- best nutritional for limited volume
FluffyChix replied to 2Bsmaller18's topic in Post-op Diets and Questions
I love things like: Green Soup (2-3oz of shrimp cooked in bone broth with any kind of chopped greens and frozen onion, pepper, celery blend -- then I spice it however I feel like it. I also love salads cuz I can eat more at a meal and I focus on 2-3oz of dense protein (salmon, tuna, sardines, shrimp, Boar's Head lunchmeat turkey or chicken. or lite liverwurst to get more iron in) and use Walden Farms or Triple Zero dressings. Then I add healthy fats with controlled amounts of avocado, olives, reduced fat cheese, pumpkin or sunflower seeds. I can get a ton protein and nutrients for around 100 cals. I also love fish, shrimp, and all seafood cuz it's a lot of protein per ounce (or can be) and very low in cals. Also green smoothies with protein powder, frozen spinach, frozen blueberries (1oz), peanut butter powder and cashew milk is very dense. I also add whole pysllium husks for more fiber and a shake that sticks to your ribs! -
Yes I think that premier protein is good to drink. I have tried chocolate vanilla and the new one strawberry and creme which is good.
-
I'm a big fan of Premier Protein shakes too. I get them at Sam's and Kroger (in 4 packs when I have a coupon). All of the flavors are good.
