    Scared

I have bcbs federal (standard option) and had my surgery July 2013. I lost initially during the preop stage but then gained a few pounds of it back. I did not have any problems with approval. I lost during my 2 week liquid diet. My surgeon's office told me if I gained during that stage they may extend the liquid diet. Good luck with your journey.
  2. Hi All, I'm getting in the home stretch of completing my 6 month program. Only 2 more visits!! I mentioned it to my hubby and he acted like he didn't know what I was talking about. I said I've been telling you since June that I'm going through the process. We had a heart to heart and he is starting to come around about me having the surgery. He is worried of course about the surgical part and me losing too much weight. Is there any such thing (wink...wink :-) :wink2:Glad we talked and I'll keep you all posted. P.S. - which of the Protein Shake providers sends out the free samples? I saw it in a post a while ago and can't remember. Thanks for listening..... I am......thatgurl...... continued success to everyone...keep on....keepin' on!

    Protein Pills Or Shots?

I didnt like the power pak pudding, but everyone is different and you're right,it is alot, about the size of the Frito lay chip dips in the can. You can by protein shots at most vitamins stores and they have about 42 grams of protein
  4. You can buy protein shots at gnc and online. I just bought some but haven't tried one yet. I'll try to report back when I do.
  5. Ok guys so I'm one week banded tomorrow and just want to make sure I'm on the right track. I've notices people at a similar stage to me describe that they are still very sore and not able to consume much? I'm the opposite. I'm up and about my daily duties without much discomfort and quite hungry. Whilst a Protein shake satisfies me during the day first thing in the morning I'm starving. It's 8.25 in the morning and so far I have had a coffee, tea and now on my second glass of a strawberry, banana, yougurt and skim milk smoothie! Is it normal to be this hungry in the morning and is the smoothie the kind of thing I should be drinking?

    Advice Needed!

Wow, I would be happy you've recovered so quickly. I'm 1 week tomorrow and still very sore. I'm struggling to get in my protein and Water in. My hunger started returning yesterday, but I'm still limited to 4 TBLS a meal. Have you been following your post-surgical diet plan? I'd talk to your doctor. If you are healed consider yourself lucky.

    Protein Pills Or Shots?

I drink Whey Protein elite series 60g for 2 scoops..yummy it's damn good I drink the chocolate! Taste like slim fast
  8. i purchased the pudding and i have to say it's really not that bad. the only draw back for me is that i have to eat over the entire day because the serving is so large...i can only eat about 1/3 of it in a sitting right now. and every single protein shot i have tried is absolutely DISGUSTING!! im not gettng more than 30-35 grams right now and when it comes right down to it, i can't take another protein shot or shake at this point in time!!

    Protein Pills Or Shots?

I too drink the Elite series and i actually like it a lot! I add like 2 tsp of the sugar free instant pudding mix (white chocolate) with it and 1%milk and its just like a yummy shake. I am 5 days post op and all i have had is Water, sugar free popsicles, gatorade, and some koolaide. Im too scared to try andything else. I know i need to get broths in amd i def need to get my Protein Shake in. How long after surgery did u start your shakes and did it hurt? How long does it take you to drink one shake with one scoop? I usually make mine with one scoop of shake mix two tsp of instant Jello pudding mix and 10-12ozs of 1%milk.
  10. I hear ya! I don't think there is any pill or shot, but what a great idea! Have you tried the RTD Premier Protein? I wouldn't say it is wonderful, but it is ok. I have resorted to these because the powders make me want to vomit. They also have 30g of protein in each. I have also just learned about Power Pak pudding. It has 30g of protein in each pudding. I haven't tried them yet, but I will be getting some soon. If they are anything like the Stallone puddings from back in the day, I will like them.

Difficulty meeting goals in the pureed/soft food stage

Are you still drinking protein shakes? My main nutrition came from those for quite a long time, solids were just for variety and practice. I still supplement with protein shakes 2.5 years out to meet my goals

    How Long After To Drive?

I started driving about a week and a half post op. after surgery because of the lack of protein and food I felt a little weak and was afraid of driving, I did not feel safe to drive until then. Good luck!
  13. I recently heard about Zonegran, a new drug that may help with weight loss. Here's an article about it and another drug called Axokine that makes it sound promising: http://webmd.lycos.com/content/article/63/71964.htm Now obviously, these weight loss drugs are still too new to be sure if they will be useful to MO patients. I'm surely glad I got the band! But such developments give me hope that in 5 or 10 years there may be some amazing advances in curing obesity without surgery. Perhaps something that will make it easier than it is with the band. If that is the case, I will be grateful that I chose the band instead of the RNY or DS. If some easier method of weight control comes along in a few years, I have the option to get unbanded and will be essentially back to normal. Reversing an RNY or DS is far, far more complicated and risky. So, it really makes me feel bad for all the young people out there who are going for the RNY. That is such a drastic, permanent choice to be making. The band makes sense as a first choice. The RNY and DS are only justified as last resorts, in my opinion.

    First Fill News 1/3/2010

Christmas was wonderful....but I'm kind of glad that the temptation is OVER and done with.... whew! There was an abundance of chocolate candy, cookies and other treats where we spent Christmas!!! I had my first fill 5 days ago, 12-30-2009. It really wasn't too bad. It didn't hurt any more than any other shot... (and not NEARLY as bad as my recent flu and tetanus shots!!) The appointment took less than 15 minutes and I was on my way. The nurse completely obstructed me (via saline) at first. She said this was to help me understand how the process of swallowing will be changing a little...and to get an idea of the feelings I may experience. (She had me sip water until I was "tipped off" and then she released the saline, so I could feel the water drain through... it was a little strange, but not distressing. She again encouraged little tiny bites, eating slowly, eating protein first, no drinking with meals -- all of which I've been practicing for the past 6 weeks! I'm glad I've had some time to build up my new habits. My hunger level has been fine over the past 6 weeks. even without a fill. I can easily go 4-6 hours between meals. It's actually kind of cool to hear my stomach growl... and to realize... oh, I need to eat something! I haven't been able to eat much at a time. Certainly not more than 1/4-1/2 a sandwich, hamburger, etc...depending on its size and the type of bread involved. (I oinch off a lot of the bread instead of eating it.) Mostly, I eat grilled chicken or baked turkey breast and soft veggies. I did have some wonderful roast this weekend that melted in my mouth! Swallowing has not been a problem. I do take little bites -- and I try to quit eating before I start to feel too full. The whole process is still amazing to me! Now that I'm home, I'm exercising again. (There was WAY too much snow and ice where we were visiting over Christmas... and the temp was in the single digits! TOO cold for this southern girl!!) But now, I'm back to doing either 30 minutes on the treadmill or on the bike. Also doing a little bit with free weights and lunges. Just easing into it and trying to make exercise a daily habit. Still AMAZED by the whole thing.... very happy and thankful that God provided this opportunity for me. :smile2: I hope anyone reading this is also experiencing positive results. HINT== Check out the thread that is all before-after pictures and you'll feel really motivated!!

  16. Thank You everyone for your thoughts on this issue. As I said from everything I have read 41 grams didn't seem right to me. When I questioned it the reply being that your thinner now just didn't seem right to me either. During last week's support group they introduced a new staff member a Dietitian. However they are still working out the insurance details and her schedule. She was not there today. Perhaps when I get to the 6 week stage and I can eat a bit more I will call her and ask about this 41 grams. Until then I feel like I shouldn't listen to the Dr and just continue with at least 1 shake and try for 60 to 80 grams of Protein. If I see a gain then maybe make an adjustment. Outsidematchinginside thank you and you are 100% correct. I am only at about 400 to 600 calories 57 to 80 protein depending on how many shakes I have had each day. Only physically being able to eat 1 1/2 oz of meat protein and maybe 1/8 to 1/4 cup of Beans isn't going to give me a lot of calories. I am getting more calories with the shakes and soups. perforce thanks for the protein amount info. I had no idea how it was figured. Based on what your saying if my math is correct I should be trying to get 106 grams of protein. Wow what a difference from what the surgeon is saying.
  17. The short answer is yes, you do have a reduced need for Protein (and other macronutrients) as you lose weight, just like you need fewer calories at this weight than when you started. My RD bases my protein needs on my ideal weight. Remember that your ability to eat, and tolerance for things you can eat, will change over time. Yes, you may need a shake or two now, but the goal will be to get most of your nutrition from real food. One argument against protein shakes and supplements is that real foods contain micronutrients that the manufactured foods can't. One reason protein is pushed postop is that all food is made up of three macronutiriets: protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Protein is stressed because fat is generally not well tolerated in the first few months postop, and carbohydrate can lead to cravings - and it's way too simple to get our hands on simple carbs that won't provide us with enough nutrition to dust a fiddle with. Protein fills us up, and keeps us filled up. As far as hair loss is concerned, my own theory is that hair loss can be the byproduct of insufficient fat and micronutrients in the immediate postop period, but an RD, so it's just my guess.
  18. Okay, coming in here to again dispute the claim that people can’t absorb more than 20g of Protein per sitting. That is NOT TRUE and it has been debunked countless times. It is one of the many myths perpetuated by some fitness/bodybuilding groups. Your body utilizes nearly ALL macronutrients (unless you have a medical condition or specific health problem). Your body will typically only utilize 20-30g of protein for muscle synthesis, but protein has many other vital functions and there is no such thing as “wasting” it. It will all be absorbed gradually throughout your digestive tract. Our bodies would be terribly inefficient if we couldn’t process such an important substance throughout human history, where 95% of humanity lived in a state of feast/famine. Vitamins and other micronutrients can be filtered out in urine once a specific level is reached, but NOT protein. Fewer high-protein meals have been confirmed as more effective in study after study (rather than many more 20g or less protein meals). I know everyone has their own experiences and their own unique path to success, but please be careful repeating false information. http://www.scientificamerican.com/article/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb/ http://www.livestrong.com/article/487366-how-many-grams-of-protein-can-body-absorb-in-one-sitting/ http://www.menshealth.com/fitness/how-much-protein-can-the-body-absorb-in-one-meal http://www.renegadeworkouts.com/the-body-can-only-absorb-20-grams-of-protein-per-meal-where-do-i-even-begin/ (tons of links to credible studies in this one)

    So confused-Weighing less=less protein?

According to my surgeon, my protein target is for life. It is not reduced when I lose weight.
  20. OOPs I just read your OOPS. LOL Apparently you didn't read the original posting otherwise ou would have discovered I was trying to meet the 60 grams post op 1 month goal. The Dr told me yesterday to drop down to 41 grams of Protein now that I weigh 32% less than when I started. I track everyday at myfitnesspal. I do not have a NUT
  21. In regards to sour cream with scrambled eggs I would suggest chive low fat cottage cheese instead. You would be getting the protein from the cottage cheese. I don't know if sour cream really has much food value.
  22. Inner Surfer Girl

    So confused-Weighing less=less protein?

I am glad you are finally discovering this. My concern/question is why have you not been tracking your protein with the goal of meeting your protein goal all along? Did you not receive any nutritional education from your surgeon, NUT, and/or bariatric team? This is such a vital part of post-op nutrition it is still amazing to me that so many people seem to not know this. I really am just curious. Edited to add: never mind, I just realized that it was your surgeon giving you this advice. SMH.

    First Fill!

Wow. I do not work out an hour a day! I try to be active most days of the week. So that means walks during lunch break, or going to the gym after work. I am not on a real exercise plan or anything. I do strength training 2x a week. For eating ... I'm all over the board. I try to follow the basic rules - protein first, then veggies, then starch. I am making a lot of shredded meats in my slow cooker right now. Super convenient. I eat every few hours, unfortunately. I have a homemade smoothie for breakfast, a protein bar for snack, a frozen dinner for lunch, then some sort of protein/meat for supper.

Thanks for the tips, Deb! I will likely have trouble getting the protein in, too. I have been drinking two Premier shakes before I eat anything else, just to be sure to get my 60 grams in.

    can`t use the restroom

Go to a drug store and get some benefiber. A lot of people here use miralax but benefiber is less harsh on your system. You need to increase your Water intake too. It really helps because you are mostly on Proteins.
