Headed to Mexico on February 7th. How am I feeling? Well that is a good question. I am excited about the future, worried about the future, nervous of complications since I do not have insurance and my surgeon will be so far away. Honestly I backed out of my January date because I let my fears get the best I me. But this time non refundable ticket bought and I am going through with it. I am encouraged by all of the success stories and then freaked out about all the complications. Lol. Yep, you do not want to be in my head right now. Starting pre op diet next Tuesday. My surgery was on Tuesday, and I had second thoughts, even as they were rolling me back to the OR. I kept worrying about all of the possible bad outcomes. I am not far enough out to say that everything is great and it is the best decision of my life yet, but I can say that I have had no complications at all. Even last night, I was thinking, "what the hell did I do to myself?" I have had lots of gas pains mostly, and a lot of discomfort. That being said, I was doing so well that they sent me home a day earlier than was expected. Just remember that when people are posting bad experiences it is typically because they are in that less than 2% complication group of people who experience complications. The other 98% are not having any issues at all, so they are not writing in this forum asking what they should do because everything is going well. The one thing I can say about reading all of those posts about things going wrong is that I was prepared for just about anything. Had I not done the research I did pre-op, I think my recovery would have been much tougher. At least I knew what to expect, which made it easier to deal with what I was feeling each step of the recovery so far. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

Advancing your diet- on your own
MrsSugarbabe replied to TheRevisionedVagabond's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I stayed on plan. I didn't want to risk damaging my new sleeve stomach and didn't want it to have to work harder because of what I had eaten - it had to work hard enough at healing itself that it wasn't worth the risk. I encountered complications 6 days post-op which didn't help the healing process either. I am what is called a compliant patient when it comes to my healthcare, as well as being an educated consumer -

@Alex forgive me if I missed it, but the care for complications that arise after I return home must be treated in MX? Hence the flights and reimbursement mentioned above. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App -

I am contemplating Dr Illan in MX but my sister, who is a nurse anesthestitist, states that if there is any complications, no Dr state side will want to touch me. What did y'all do after you came back? PS....my sister had a bariatric patient die on her table due to blowing out his stitches 4 years after surgery. Sent from my SM-G920V using the BariatricPal App

UPDATE: brought up the question and the surgeon has said they will not do a bypass on me due to my 'low BMI'. So my options are sleeve or to find another surgeon. I'm am now actively searching for second opinions, since my highmark BCBS insurance no longer requires the 6 month nutrition counseling, so I'm eligible to apply for approval now. It has left a bad taste in my mouth, since that's really contrary to everything I've read about bypass in BMI ~40 patients. And I'm informed on risks and complications, but the long term security in the bypass results vs sleeve, have me really considering looking elsewhere. Sent from my SM-G900T using the BariatricPal App

How fast can you return to work ?
mmelissab replied to Natí Beesh's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I got the rny not the sleeve on December 12th. I had planned to return to work January 3rd, but I got a pretty bad infection in one of the incision sites and just returned to work yesterday. My suggestion would be to hope for two weeks but plan for a month to six weeks if there are complications. I still have to pack the incision site twice daily! Good luck on your surgery! Not sure but I think the rule is that they don't have to have the details but you would need a note from doctor regarding required time off. Most short term disability requires you also to take like a week of sick leave first and depending on your job most people don't take more than a couple weeks. My doctor wouldn't sign off on more than two weeks unless I had complications Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

A mini gastric bypass surgery is very similar to gastric bypass surgery, except that there is only one anastomosis instead of two anastomoses. There is still a pouch made, and there is the same restriction and malabsorption but less chance of complications and quicker recovery. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App

From personal experience with family members the bypass has far more risks of complications down the line! And I'm saying that because I have two family members who have had it! My aunt had bypass and is bigger now then before the surgery! But I'm happy to say I'm officially 1 week post op VSG! Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App

Advancing your diet- on your own
Chicken Lady replied to TheRevisionedVagabond's topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I followed my surgeons plan... but it allowed me to have purée as tolerated immediately after surgery. I sure didn't slurp more than a bite at a time. I took it slow and some days didn't feel like having purée anything, but it was nice knowing I was allowed if I wanted to. I was careful with what I had and did not have any complications. Does gastric sleeve make Cyclic vomiting Syndrome worse?
Nellie D Perron posted a topic in Gastric Sleeve Surgery Forums
I had a failed lap band, and decided to get a gastric sleeve. I suffer from Cyclic vomiting Syndrome. It is an uncommon disorder, many doctors know little about it. There are 4 people on my CVS support group who had bariatric surgery and now their episodes are out of control. Two of them went from episodes once a month to daily, and are now in wheelchairs due to malnutrition.I asked my surgeon, but he didn't say there were increased complications with CVS and gastric surgery.I cannot find any info out there, but there aren't many of us CVSers who are obese. Does anyone know ANYTHING about this topic? -
My sleeve surgery seems almost too easy. So far.
Original Poster replied to RunningWithScissors's topic in POST-Operation Weight Loss Surgery Q&A
I was sleeved the morning of 11/14 & went home that afternoon. I was worried, too, BUT! No complications and recovery had been a breeze. My surgeon tests for leaks 3 times during surgery so there was no need for a radiology exam. -

Wow , that is quick. How long was your surgery? I was told it's about 2 hours and the recovery a few hours after. Seems a little questionable to me that your surgery and being discharged within 2 1/2 hours. Hope all continues to go well for you. I was told i will stay 2 nights . I go in on Monday the 30th and being discharged on Feb 1st . Sent from my SM-J700T using the BariatricPal App I was a little sceptical about doing this outpatient at first. I did a fair amount of research and many recent studies in the last two years have been published that say that this surgery is safe outpatient. Of course i only have my own experience to draw from, if i was having complications I would be singing a different tune. -

I was terrified of complications as well so yeah, I followed my plan to the letter. That said, my post op plan want as torturous as some others seem to have been- I was allowed well chewed soft food after 2 weeks. -

Mexico Location's - Please Help
GBLady41 replied to I'm Changing 4 Me's topic in Mexico & Self-Pay Weight Loss Surgery
I had surgery with Dr. Illan and worked through BariatricPal Team MX. One of the best choices I have made in my life. Dr. Illan is one of the best bariatric surgeons in Mexico. And the surgical staff, doctors and nurses are attentive and care. The valets also make sure you have everything you need and are taken well care of. If you have a companion with you, the valets will make sure they are taken care of. They will take them out for food, or pick it up for them. They are never alone. I brought my daughter with me and I didn't have to worry about a thing. I spent 3 days in the hospital (Oasis Hospital of Hope), then spent two days at Pueblo Amigo Hotel and Casino. I was given the liquids needed for my stay at the hotel. The valets also took us out to eat and we did some shopping as well, including going to the pharmacy. One valet (Garab) also went and bought a nice basket full of stuff for the doctors and nurses at the hospital that me and my surgery sisters wanted to give to them as a thank you for all they did for us. I have had zero complications and can email my nutritionist (Stacy) with any questions. I can also email or call Bill with any questions, and if he doesn't know the answer, he will find the answer out. And if I have a question for Dr. Illan, he will respond to it personally. My best surgery experience. Sent from my iPad using the BariatricPal App -

My surgery date was 5/11/16. I had a similar problem. I knew something was not right from the time I came home from the hospital. I could not eat or drink without throwing it right back up. At my one week checkup I was laying in the chair in the waiting room and two other patients that had surgery the same day I did were doing great. It continued to get worse, so after about a month of this I finally went to the ER. They did a cat scan and a had a hematoma on the outside of my stomach the size of a grapefruit. Apparently a blood vessel was nicked and was leaking. The hematoma was full of infection. I was in bad shape. I had to have it drained and I was on strong antibiotics for 6 weeks. I was in the hospital for four days but my doctor was great. He came to see me twice everyday. But the good news is I am doing great now. I am down 86 pounds and have no other complications. So hang in there! Hopefully the worst is behind you. If you have any questions please let me know. Sent from my iPhone using the BariatricPal App
